00:00That is a picture-perfect postcard.
00:06It's paradise.
00:08Paradise on Earth.
00:10Wow.
00:12Huge difference in colour from the Pacific to the Caribbean Sea.
00:16The Caribbean Ocean is just unmatched.
00:18Are there sharks in these woods?
00:24Bocas del Toro.
00:26An archipelago of tropical islands along the northwest coast of Panama,
00:31ranging from uninhabited natural wonders
00:34to the colourful, stilted clapboard houses of Bocas Town.
00:39This has been a proper vengeance story, I think.
00:41We've seen that growth to first.
00:43We were in total shock.
00:45Yeah, couldn't believe it.
00:46It took quite a few hours for it to really sink in.
00:48Competition in the penultimate leg of the race promises to be tight
00:52as just 43 minutes separates the top three teams.
00:56And for the first time, Dylan and Jackie sit in pole position.
01:01Don't slip up.
01:02You've got the pressure of leading the pack now.
01:03I know.
01:04We don't like it.
01:05We don't want pressure.
01:06We crumble.
01:07We crumble.
01:08Still after that first place at one point.
01:10I've had dreams where I'm like, we come first,
01:12then I'm like shoving Anita and bam.
01:14I'm like, come on.
01:16We're first.
01:17Come on.
01:18When we first met Dylan,
01:19he was a different person to who he is now.
01:21Now I feel like he's grown into himself throughout this journey.
01:25And now I'm ready to beat him.
01:27I was quite gutted when we opened the book.
01:31No, you were fuming.
01:32I was, I was pretty, I was pretty mad.
01:34Because I felt like we'd done so well.
01:38How have the top two become the bottom two?
01:41Character building.
01:42What happens?
01:43I think we felt sorry for her.
01:45We're not too far behind.
01:48Yeah.
01:49We know our strengths and when we start moving,
01:51we move.
01:52We move.
01:53Four legs in, everyone is hot on it now.
01:56Yeah, like everybody's found their river.
01:58Obviously we finished last,
02:00but it's all to play for.
02:02Every man for themselves on this one.
02:04You thought we were racing before?
02:06Oh, we're on it.
02:07We're changing gear.
02:08It's gear five now.
02:09Two legs to go.
02:10Yeah.
02:11We race.
02:12Yeah.
02:22What day?
02:266.30am.
02:28First to leave the checkpoint.
02:30Wednesdays.
02:31Yeah, thank you.
02:32Race leaders, Dylan and Jackie.
02:34Ready?
02:35Ready.
02:36Your fifth checkpoint is Medellin.
02:39I swear that's Colombia.
02:41I think I've seen it in like a Pablo Escobar series.
02:44Oh, really?
02:45I think.
02:46Over 1,300 kilometres away, Colombia's second largest city,
02:51Medellin, sprawls across the Abura Valley,
02:54in the northern end of the Andes mountain range.
02:59As the epicentre of Pablo Escobar's drug cartel,
03:02it was once labelled the murder capital of the world.
03:07But now it's a safer and vibrant metropolis.
03:10Oh, okay.
03:11All teams have to bypass the Darien Gap by water.
03:17For safety reasons, this journey has to be in daylight hours.
03:22Darien Gap.
03:23I've heard that it can be a bit dangerous.
03:25The notorious and perilous Darien Gap.
03:29The only land connection between Central and South America.
03:33But no roads run through its dense jungle and vast swamps.
03:37For tens of thousands of migrants each year,
03:40this treacherous expanse,
03:42much of it controlled by criminal gangs,
03:45is their only route north.
03:48To reach Colombia, the teams have one option.
03:52To travel by sea.
03:56But first, a chance to explore Panama.
03:59Panama's quite a funny shape.
04:01It's kind of like a, like a goose neck.
04:03There seems to be a main road going through.
04:05Yeah, yeah.
04:06They may be tempted to grab opportunities in the west.
04:11With its allure of well-paid work and hidden natural beauty.
04:15Or the adventurers could make a beeline for the east coast
04:19and the secluded, turquoise-ringed islands of Gunayala.
04:24Also known as Sandblas, an autonomous territory
04:27home to the indigenous Gunna people.
04:31On the last leg, just being in nature gave me a sense of calm
04:34and it would be nice to have a nature feast again.
04:38Definitely.
04:39Something like hot water springs.
04:41Yeah.
04:42Waterfalls.
04:43Yeah, yeah, that'd be amazing.
04:44So if we go south, maybe Buquet,
04:47there might be like something around there.
04:49Yeah.
04:50And then follow this big road through to Panama City.
04:53Yeah.
04:54It's also very difficult to judge whether we have enough money
04:57for the whole trip or not.
04:59We've hemorrhaged a bit.
05:00Yeah.
05:01With budgets dwindling, Dylan and Jackie have the least amount
05:04of money to tackle the longest leg of the race so far.
05:10It's just the unknowns of these countries.
05:13We don't know.
05:14But this is our penultimate leg.
05:16So I want us to stand in good stead for the last leg
05:20by saving in this leg.
05:23Here we go.
05:24Hola.
05:25Hola.
05:26To continue their journey, teams need to get off the islands
05:29of Bocas del Toro.
05:31Boats depart regularly to Almirante,
05:33the closest mainland port,
05:35where they can pick up onward transport.
05:38We need to get to Buquet.
05:40Right now it's La Atua.
05:42We get a boat to the main island
05:44and then bus shorter to Buquet.
05:46Would it not be quicker for us to get a boat now to Almirante
05:50and there's any Almirante travel to Buquet sooner?
05:54It's possible, but it's more expensive.
05:56I recommend you go to a street to Buquet,
05:58but at 12pm.
05:59OK.
06:00So shall we book it?
06:01Let's book it.
06:0230 each, yeah?
06:03Yeah.
06:04Rather than risk finding a connection in the port of Almirante,
06:07Dylan and Jackie opt for a package deal transfer
06:10of boat and bus to Buquet in the Western Highlands.
06:15We could get a quicker ferry, but then it's a bit risky.
06:18Juggling buses, which are not that regular over there,
06:20from what I can gather.
06:21Also it might be more expensive that rain as well.
06:24Yeah.
06:25So it makes more sense to wait for three hours.
06:27I think it's smart to save money.
06:29We could speed up later.
06:31While the leaders sit tight...
06:34That's where we're headed.
06:36Medellin.
06:37Mmm.
06:38...having departed half an hour behind them
06:40and now on their tails, siblings Roman and Harley Moon.
06:44This is our last chance for a proper, like, cultural adventure.
06:47Do you know what I mean?
06:48Yeah.
06:49Roman found the first few legs quite stressful
06:51and I really felt like I had to look after him a lot.
06:54But the last leg, he's been quite calm.
06:56So I hope he realises it is fun as well.
07:01We're going to have to get the boat from Panama.
07:04So Mandigua is a tiny island in the direction of Colombia,
07:08which is good.
07:09Yeah.
07:10It is home to a single Guna family.
07:13I mean, the only thing is, is I'm an Arsenal fan.
07:15I like Gunas.
07:16I think we can live in our own bubble at times
07:20and travelling somewhere
07:21and seeing what their version of life is.
07:24I think it offers perspective.
07:26The faster we can get to Panama City, the better.
07:30Seeking an off-the-beaten-track experience
07:32while staying race-focused,
07:34Roman and Harley Moon plan to head via Panama City
07:38straight to Gunayala.
07:41Harley.
07:42Look.
07:43Jackie and Dylan.
07:44Can we see them? Yeah.
07:45So what's the fastest way to Panama City?
07:47Yeah.
07:48I was hoping not to see another team.
07:51Yeah.
07:52So our best bet is to get to Almirante.
07:54Yes.
07:55And then get the bus to Panama.
07:57Yeah, let's just get off this island.
07:59Can we get two tickets?
08:00Two tickets?
08:01Six.
08:02Gracias.
08:03They're getting on the boat.
08:05But I don't think we should be stressed by it.
08:08Yeah, we shouldn't sweat about that.
08:10Why are they not getting on this boat off the island?
08:13I can still see them.
08:15Why are they not getting on?
08:16Give them away.
08:18Poodles.
08:20Bye.
08:21Adios, Roman and Harley.
08:23We'll see you in Medellin.
08:26I hope.
08:28Technically, it looks like we're ahead of the team that are first.
08:30Yeah.
08:31Here we go.
08:32Ruta Mas Rapida.
08:33Got it.
08:34Yep.
08:35One, two, three.
08:36As the siblings make a quick getaway, just 12 minutes behind them.
08:42So my instinct is we take a job.
08:45Anita and Bal eager to find ways to preserve their budget.
08:49Worker shift at Rocks is in Boca Chica down here.
08:52Yeah.
08:53And then you're by the main road to get to Panama City.
08:57Panama is mega bucks and so saving money is definitely part of the strategy
09:03because we know we're going to probably need as much as we can for when we get to Colombia.
09:07Anita's plan, working at a B&B to save an accommodation in the Cherokee province en route to the capital.
09:14Almirante, muchas gracias.
09:23The first team to arrive on the mainland.
09:28Roman and Harley Moon searching for a bus straight to Panama City.
09:346pm.
09:35Yes, yes.
09:37It's direct.
09:38It's direct.
09:39The other route is from David.
09:41David, Panama.
09:42OK.
09:43That's a bus.
09:44Shall we get that?
09:45We can't wait till 6pm.
09:46Yeah, let's do it.
09:47Yeah.
09:48With no direct bus departure for seven and a half hours, the siblings head to a nearby transport
10:00hub in search of an earlier connection.
10:02Come on, David, my sweetheart.
10:04Give us some luck.
10:05Give us some faith.
10:06Do you reckon Dylan and Jackie made it off the island yet?
10:09Do-do-do-do-do.
10:13Having finally reached Almirante port by boat, mother and son are still waiting for their bus to depart for Bochetti.
10:23Where are you guys from?
10:24Like London area?
10:25Yeah.
10:26Like England?
10:27Yeah, yeah.
10:28Cool.
10:29In Medellin.
10:30We did the boat to San Blas.
10:32Don't do it like that, okay?
10:33The waves were like three metres tall.
10:35Oh, my gosh.
10:36People were crying.
10:37Dogs were barking.
10:38No.
10:39People were growing up.
10:40What?
10:41It wasn't good.
10:42We're going to Colombia.
10:43We might be doing that.
10:45Yeah, thank you.
10:46And you enjoy as well.
10:47Yeah.
10:48Everyone's crying, she said.
10:49Yeah.
10:50Oh, God.
10:51Right now, the buses are ready.
10:52Okay.
10:53This way, please.
10:55Gracias.
10:56So we got going at my house.
10:58Oh, my gosh.
10:59Oh, my gosh.
11:00People were crying.
11:01Dogs were barking.
11:02No.
11:03People were throwing up.
11:04Gracias.
11:05So we got going at most six hours ago.
11:07Yeah.
11:08Slow stop.
11:09Makes you wonder whether where we're going is a bit in the middle of nowhere.
11:13That's why there's not such a regular bus service.
11:17Hopefully, we can make up the ground and finish the...
11:20We'll stay positive.
11:21Yeah.
11:22Stay positive.
11:23How are you doing, sir?
11:24Good.
11:25You okay to take us to the terminal?
11:26Yeah.
11:27Excellent.
11:28Just arriving off the boat into Almirante, Molly and Tyler.
11:32Swift start.
11:33With a seven-hour gap to close, they're on a dash to the bus station.
11:37Hopefully, get an overnight bus.
11:39To Panama City.
11:40To Panama City.
11:41To Panama City.
11:42And then grab a boat into Colombia.
11:44Yeah.
11:45Is there a direct bus to Panama City?
11:48Let me see.
11:49Is there my space?
11:51Oh, no.
11:52Thank you, ma'am.
11:53Who's going to check if there's space on the bus?
11:55That's great.
11:56Yeah, a space to Panama Direct.
11:57From here?
11:58From here?
11:59Yes, from here.
12:00Oh, man.
12:01Yeah, you have luck.
12:02That bus reaching about 5 o'clock in the morning.
12:05Yeah, perfect.
12:06Yeah, perfect.
12:07Yeah, perfect.
12:08Yeah, amazing.
12:09This is good.
12:12This is awesome, ma'am.
12:15Mmm.
12:16You are the best, man.
12:18Thank you, sir.
12:19Eleven hours of travel, over halfway across the country, and it's a nice accommodation.
12:23There you go.
12:24Get the bus.
12:25Get the bus.
12:26Get the bus.
12:27Get the bus.
12:28Yes.
12:29This is going to help us catch up majorly to the other teams.
12:35This is the redemption leg for us.
12:38Yeah.
12:39This is catch-up leg.
12:40Yeah.
12:41Taking the bus Roman and Harley Moon passed on earlier, Molly and Tyler are making a 600-kilometer
12:46overnight leap to Panama City.
12:51I feel like tomorrow morning, this is basically like a level playing field.
12:55We need to just continue this energy.
12:57We can't take our foot off the gas.
13:01Look at the skyscrapers.
13:02First time we've seen skyscrapers this entire trip.
13:05After successfully securing a connection in David, the siblings are the first team into the capital.
13:10I'm quite impressed by Panama City.
13:12Yeah.
13:13Towering over the Pacific, the Wall Street of Central America, one of the region's wealthiest cities,
13:20it's become a magnet for millionaire migration.
13:23It really feels like we're in the US.
13:26I have a feeling it's going to be US prices.
13:29In a way, you're a bit gutted to not spend time in a nice city, but on our budget...
13:34I don't think we can afford to stay here.
13:36No.
13:39Hola.
13:40Oh, lift.
13:41What?
13:42We haven't had a lift in ages.
13:44This is very modern.
13:45Oh, yeah.
13:46Electricity and everything.
13:48I feel quite good about our progress today.
13:50We've pretty much covered half of the country in a day.
13:54We're about to cross the Guna Yalla.
13:57I don't know much about the Darien Gap, but it doesn't sound safe.
14:01There's moments in this race where we've both decided we will not tell our mum about it,
14:07and this might be one of those moments.
14:09It's got such a nice feeling about it here.
14:21You have haller monkeys every morning.
14:23Who are here?
14:24Yes.
14:28Okay, coming this way.
14:29We have the guests today around here already.
14:31Ah, nice.
14:32If you can give me the hand and put those in the tables.
14:34Sure.
14:35For everybody?
14:36Same for everybody?
14:37450 kilometres west from Panama City,
14:40and sitting on the Gulf of Chiriqui National Marine Park,
14:43the small fishing village of Boca Chica.
14:46This is going to be the best torch you've ever seen in life.
14:51Anita and Bal are working to pay off last night's accommodation
14:54at Roxy's B&B.
14:56This looks so delicious.
14:58Buenos dias.
15:00There we go.
15:01And one for the little board.
15:03Right.
15:04This is ready to go.
15:05Yeah.
15:06Who hasn't had breakfast yet?
15:08You're emptying them?
15:09Yeah.
15:10I'll wash them.
15:11Look at Dad.
15:12He's washing the dishes.
15:13He's really good at this.
15:14He's so cute.
15:15Oh, my God.
15:16We'll have these done in minutes.
15:17He's such a hard worker.
15:18I want to keep it longer.
15:19There we go.
15:20You were really helpful for us.
15:21I want to show you the area.
15:22That would be amazing.
15:23This village is just 200 people.
15:25I had the experience from Costa Rica that I used to run hotels.
15:26I'm like, I can't start a bed and breakfast by myself.
15:30My place is running by girls.
15:31All women.
15:32Just women.
15:33Wow.
15:34They have their own families, but not a husband.
15:35Single women.
15:36I told them, I can teach you some English.
15:37You can run a place with me together.
15:38We have to empower women in a small village like this.
15:41I just want them to know how valued they are.
15:43That is special for me.
15:44This is the dream, Roxy.
15:45This is the dream, Roxy.
15:46This is the dream, Roxy.
15:47This is the dream, Roxy.
15:48This is the dream, Roxy.
15:49You're amazing.
15:51I feel like I'm being told something myself, right?
15:52That there are things that I'd like to do.
15:54There's been a bit of a change in my life in the last couple of years.
15:56I'm a woman, a husband, a husband, a husband, a single woman.
15:58I told them, I can teach you some English.
15:59You can run a place with me together.
16:00We have to empower women in a small village like this.
16:02I just want them to know how valued they are.
16:03That is special for me.
16:04This is the dream, Roxy.
16:05You're amazing.
16:07I feel like I'm being told something myself, right?
16:10That there are things that I'd like to do.
16:12There's been a bit of a change in my life in the last couple of years.
16:18Come on, Dad, let's have a little meander before we have to get on it again.
16:22Becoming single in my mid-40s is huge.
16:26A lovely cove.
16:27Wow.
16:28Not a soul here.
16:31Growing up, there was so much expectation that you must get married and have children.
16:36And so now, it's not just a process of letting go of a past life,
16:41it's also an embracing of a new one.
16:44I've been in a bit of a funk.
16:47But what I saw in Roxy is what I know I have in myself.
16:51Drive, tenacity.
16:53And that's your strength.
16:55Before, there was always this pressure that I had to keep everyone happy.
17:00But now, this whole trip is making me think, there's so much that I want to do.
17:05It's like a sense of liberation, Dads.
17:09As a woman, but particularly as a South Asian woman, I really enjoy how powerful it feels
17:16to be able to choose to live the life I want to.
17:19And actually, I had my dad's support.
17:22Maybe I have sacrificed having a family, but I'm okay with that.
17:27And this trip has opened up my eyes about Lamar.
17:29About you, how you feel and how you think.
17:32Do you ever worry about me, Dad?
17:34We sometimes say, oh, who's she with? Is she by herself?
17:37Does she feel lonely?
17:39And that's why we sometimes phone you up and say, come and sit with us.
17:42We don't want to feel lonely, that's all.
17:44I'm not lonely, so don't worry about me being lonely.
17:48I'm good. I'm very happy.
17:49Yeah, because you're sitting with me now.
17:50I know, Dad.
17:53This is incredible.
18:04We made it.
18:05Panama City, early doors.
18:08Arriving into the capital after their overnight bus, Molly and Tyler.
18:13We've had a toilet wash.
18:15Yes.
18:16We smell fresh-ish.
18:17We smell fresh-ish.
18:18And we need to find where we can get this ticket.
18:21To the Gunayala Islands?
18:22Yeah.
18:23The only way for tourists to get safely to Colombia without flying
18:27is to take a 4x4 transfer from the capital to the Panamanian coast,
18:32followed by a boat journey through Gunayala to the border.
18:37In here.
18:38Let's go.
18:41Hola.
18:42We're trying to cross the Gunayala to get into Colombia.
18:46Habla ingles poquito.
18:48No.
18:49Le voy a dar un teléfono.
18:52Gracias.
18:53Hola.
18:54Hola.
18:55Hola.
18:56Can you please take us to Gunayala?

19:26That is basically our whole leg budget.
19:27Yeah.
19:28That's the most expensive thing we've paid for.
19:30There's nothing we can do.
19:31Oh we're such a curveball.
19:32I mean thank god we save that we can spend that money.
19:38that is basically our whole leg budget yeah that's the most expensive thing

19:50God we say that we can spend that money
19:57to reach the port a 120 kilometer journey that winds around the sandblast
20:03mountains to the guna coast we are in the sticks man and there's nothing but
20:11jungle makes you think how hard it is to get to the border and the coast what the
20:18Darien Gap is actually like a pound was so inaccessible yeah trying to go through
20:24this any other way would be a wild journey there's just so much bush this is boss
20:32level winding road this is helter-skelter thought park see I'll be the same area
20:39there is a put on your put on out to right don't be sick in the car basically now

21:23through the guna yalla is limited to daylight hours only it's got a bit oh oh my god this
21:30seats got a bit cushion night time presents the danger of rough seas and shallow reefs as well as
21:36an increased risk of cartel activity this is the toughest journey at sea of the biggest waves I've
21:48ever seen in my life lord of mercy right now upon our souls you have to have a strong stomach first
22:00it's proper pirate life please I thought we paid for a luxury cruise
22:05you okay I'm a bit uneasy right now I'd say I'm not living my best life you know you'll be okay
22:17I thought you were holding on to me and I realized you were just holding the money belt
22:22yeah keep that precious I think for my life against these waves and you're worried about the bloody
22:28money belt this is proper adventure
22:32going at a less urgent pace oh see that blue oh my gosh it's coming towards us that way that's blue
22:48whoa Dylan and Jackie are exploring the highlands of Western Panama Holly and Roman are definitely
22:56ahead of us but are they experiencing anything like this we don't know hidden away
23:01deep in the cloud forest oh wow the Haguata waterfall
23:09look at this guy no way locals and travelers come to swim in its clear pools and for the brave the
23:17opportunity to jump from its eight meter high ledge I'd be so scared dad will be straight in the water now
23:25we'd make a big splash oh my gosh let's go to the kiddie pool that's more our speed
23:38oh that's divine when I'm in nature I feel like I'm close to heaven or something
23:47I think through losses I have I feel closer to them when I'm in those moments of serenity and beauty
23:58that's amazing when I was 22 I met my first husband I was due to have James my first son 19th December and
24:09um on the 21st December there was a knock at the door and there was two fluorescent jackets
24:18they said we just want to let you know that your husband has been knocked over by car and killed instantly
24:26I had James and um I found it very difficult on my own I eventually got my act together and got on in
24:39life and coped and I met Barry who I married I've never swum near waterfall before so clear the water
24:52tears isn't it we had Cameron and then ten and a half months later Dylan came around so I had three
25:00little boys under three it was absolute chaos are you missing dad yeah I am but I actually think that
25:11not being here has made me push the boundaries of me as a person and made me grow yeah because I've
25:18always relied on dad to do things for me exactly we've had our little moments of braveness on our own
25:25it's cemented our bond even more and we support each other with James and things you know and it's
25:33it's been tough losing two people very close in my life definitely has changed me as a person when James
25:44had gone I've internalizing it trying to be brave and put brave face on for boys it took me a while to be
25:52strong again but I've had to be strong as a mother to my boys I just want to say thank you so much for
26:02everything and it's done I just don't think about it I just would always help you and love you and protect you yeah and I want to
26:11protect you now you know I want to protect you and just yeah like you deserve the world you're the best mom and
26:19I don't think I'm the best mom no you are you are I'm really proud of the way you've grown up and you
26:27probably you don't need me anymore I always need my mom always me mama oh my gosh that is the most beautiful
26:43sand I've ever seen in my life after over an hour at sea Molly and Tyler are making a pit stop we've
26:52got to jump off on here it's too special not to thank you Gunayala is made up of a narrow strip of
27:04shoreline on the fringes of the Darien Gap as well as more than 350 islands in the crystal clear waters of
27:12the Caribbean how on earth did ants get here that's crazy they're so crafty babe look at this oh it's
27:23another level isn't it well hello s what oh piss off you idiot you absolute idiot after the Spanish
27:35colonized Colombia in the 1500s the guna population gradually migrated towards the sandblast islands
27:42eventually renaming the region Gunayala there are no luxury hotels or resorts and outsiders are banned
27:51from owning property I've literally never ever in my life been somewhere this remote I don't quite
27:59yeah Roman and Harley Moon are docking on the 168 meter long Mandingua Island let's go say hello wild

29:48hermana es el nombre Harley Moon
29:52Harley Moon
29:53Harley Moon, si
29:55I'm very much in love with you pig
30:01If I stay here for the rest of my life with this pig and Roman we'd probably do okay
30:10Alright then
30:1235 kilometres ahead Molly and Tyler are the closest team to Colombia
30:17but with boats restricted from travel after dark they're bedding down on Isla de Pinos
30:24sunset on an island we've smashed it
30:30It's actually blowing my mind that we've been travelling for 27 hours so it feels like a massive weight lifted to be on this island
30:39Moles, they've got hammocks
30:42Um, okay
30:44Hola
30:45Can we stay here?
30:47Yeah
30:48Okay
30:49Thank you
30:50Well there's a touch
30:51See this is, this is it, I can do this
30:54This is vibes
30:56This is true island living
30:58What is that, is that an ant?
31:03This is the first night I've ever spent in a hammock in my whole entire life
31:14Um, Molly's hammock is nicely protected with a mosquito net, my mosquito net is on me like it's my wedding day
31:21There's no lights, there's no electricity, there's just the sounds of the waves and the sun that's going to wake us up
31:28And that's quite actually special but scary at the same time
31:31But this is the most we've ever felt alone
31:36How you doing Moles?
31:38Not great
31:39Yeah, it's protected though isn't it?
31:41Not really
31:50Over on Mandingua Island
32:00Looks harder than it looks
32:01This has actually been a really special place for us to stop
32:13There's not a TV, there's not a radio, it's just animals and family
32:20I think coming to places like this are really good for people like me, you know, who sometimes can get lost in our own world
32:27What's so funny is that you could feel like you're in the middle of nowhere but you'll still find siblings performing for guests
32:34Yeah, we used to do everything
32:36It just reminds me of us singing Craig David
32:39Doing dance routines Shaggy wasn't me
32:42Gracias, amigos
32:44Ooh
33:00Hola
33:01Gracias
33:02Dylan and Jackie are the last team to depart Panama City for Colombia
33:06Quanta Cuesta
33:08$310
33:09$150
33:10So $155 each
33:15$300
33:16Yeah, okay
33:17Well, we'll just have to play it
33:19That's a lot of money's
33:21Kind of looking forward to leaving Panama now because of so much expenses
33:27One step ahead of them, Anita and Bal
33:31Ready
33:33To Pile
33:34Setting off on a crossing that can take as long as eight hours
33:37It's a little bumpy
33:40A bit bumpy, yes
33:42But very good fun
33:43Well, we like roller coasters
33:45We do love a roller coasters
33:46In an ideal world we get to check point tonight
33:52Yeah, let's hope it's a quick smooth trip
33:54But I have no idea how long the journey is
33:58Maybe three or four hours, I don't know
34:00Fingers crossed
34:01Yeah, yeah
34:03At the front of the park, Molly and Tyler
34:11Do you feel like jumping back into the race?
34:14Not just yet
34:17Oh, look at that
34:19That's a proper traditional fisherman
34:22I could catch a fish
34:24Have you ever been fishing?
34:25I've never been fishing but that don't matter, it's about mindset
34:28Okay
34:30Buenos dias
34:32My bro
34:34Can you show me how to fish?
34:35You teach me?
34:36Okay, let's go
34:38The Guna people live as their ancestors did
34:41Farming and fishing sustainably
34:43In Ulus
34:45Handcrafted wooden canoes
34:47Como te llamas?
34:49D'Amelio
34:50Me llamo Tyler
34:52Right, I'm gonna give this a go
34:54Come on then
34:56Fishing is the least South London thing
34:59I could ever imagine myself doing
35:01I never knew what it was like to grow up in like a nuclear household
35:05My mum brought me and my brother up on their own
35:08She's done everything for us
35:10You just gotta drag it
35:12I never knew what it was like to not see my mum work multiple jobs
35:18Come on Tyler, you wouldn't be able to say, caught a fish
35:20My mum would take us out and we'd go to like the supermarket at like midnight
35:25She would say, we're gonna play a game, who can find the cheapest dinner?
35:28And at the time me and my brother are running around like yeah, we're running wild in the aisles
35:31Like it's like supermarket sweet
35:33And then we'd go home for whatever we could afford and then she'd make the dinner and then she'd tuck us in
35:37And then just the reality of that situation is that she was struggling but she never let up
35:42Oh my god
35:44Molly! Molly!
35:47What?
35:48I caught a fish!
35:50Yay! Come on!
35:52Oh my gosh, I'm holding a fish
35:55I'm holding a fish
35:57Yes!
35:59I knew we could do it
36:01Oh
36:03This is so good
36:04Honestly, muchas gracias
36:07Molly Brayford!
36:09She's gonna have to marry me, aren't she?
36:11How many fish you got?
36:14What, five?
36:16Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks
36:18That's what I was talking about
36:20I'm proud of you
36:22It was actually really special because
36:24Like I've never had that growing up
36:27Like going out, learning how to fish and stuff like that
36:28And it's one thing that I know as a dad one day
36:32I would love to be able to take my kids out and say, hey, come on, let's go fishing
36:36I feel on top of the world
36:38I feel on top of the island
36:44You go out every day?
36:46Every day
36:48Roman is also throwing himself into the Guna way of life
36:51Joining Senor Blas to collect food supplies from his farm on the mainland
36:55Where plantain fields lay in the coast
36:59We're the first?
37:04Yes
37:06Wow
37:10There's snakes here
37:15Just like that he's got the knife and I've got the handbag
37:18This feels great
37:20I've got the knife and I've got the handbag
37:24This feels like a proper step into the jungle
37:30This is hard work
37:32These plantains are not light either
37:35It's a really nice feeling
37:36You're not thinking about anything
37:38And you've just got a job to do
37:40It's kind of
37:42A nice break from your own brain, I guess
37:45You know, there's been moments in my life where I didn't even want to be here anymore
37:49And things like this just make me think
37:52If I had made different decisions, I never would have seen this
37:55And I never would have experienced this
37:58And I never, you know
38:00Yeah, this
38:02Shows that there's stuff worth living for
38:05You know
38:06You know
38:14It was a bad time in my life
38:16Listo?
38:17Vamos
38:21I remember one moment in particular where it was really bad
38:24I just remember
38:27My mum passing the phone to Harley
38:30And Harley trying to just talk to me
38:32Just to, I guess, distract me
38:35And keep me on the phone
38:37So that my mum could get in the car and drive to me
38:41I don't know if I ever actually have spoken to Harley about that call
38:44I don't think we've ever really been ready to have that conversation
38:48It's hard to talk about, man
38:50It's really hard
38:51It's really hard
38:59What I do know is
39:01That conversation between my mum and Harley
39:04Might have saved my life on that day
39:06That was hard
39:15We walked about an hour into the jungle
39:17What was it like?
39:20I'm not used to doing stuff that removes me from everything
39:25Yeah
39:27But it did make me think though
39:29Because obviously
39:31You know that I've had moments in my life where I just feel like I didn't really want to be here anymore
39:36Yeah
39:43What's upset you?
39:45No, nothing
39:47It's just hard because like
39:49We had that day where it was really bad
39:52For me
39:53The more that I think about it and I realise that it was you on the phone to me and
40:01Until mum got there
40:14I can't even remember what the conversation was
40:17But I knew that I was safe if I stayed on the phone
40:19And I feel bad because I never really said thanks for that
40:25That was...
40:27Tom
40:33We just want you to be okay
40:36No, I appreciate it so much
40:39So sorry that I put you guys through that
40:42It was okay
40:44I just want you to be happy, right?
40:46You don't need to say thanks
40:47I don't want to feel like that ever again and I don't think I will
40:53I'm sorry that I don't tell you enough that I love you
40:59I love you too
41:00I don't know too
41:05I feel so sad
41:07Yeah
41:13Sigh
41:17We've never had that conversation before
41:19It's nice to hear him say I love you but I know he loves me
41:21When someone has had episodes of really bad mental health I think you will always worry about them
41:30And I was worried about him coming out here and he's really turned it around and he's doing great and I'm really proud of him
41:38It feels really freeing to have the conversation because now there's nothing lingering we're kind of a clean slate again and I think this place will always kind of be special to Harley and I
41:54All right, let's get back on the boat
42:00It's one of those places you want to take one last look
42:03I know
42:08Can you get in?
42:10Yes
42:12Right, back to it
42:13Oh
42:15That was amazing
42:23All four teams are now back at sea but with Colombian immigration closing before dusk there's urgency to get to the border
42:33We will get there
42:35We will?
42:37Oh my gosh
42:39He's got into boy racer mode now
42:40What's going on?
42:43Senor
42:45Why have we stopped?
42:47I stopped
42:49Until when? What time?
42:51It's getting dark
42:53Quanto tiempo to Colombia?
42:55No sir, you don't know
42:57This is it
42:59They're sleeping overnight
43:01Anita and Bal have travelled as far as they can safely before night falls
43:05We've been deserted on a desert island
43:10The adventure continues
43:1270 kilometres behind
43:15I haven't seen the Colombian flag yet
43:17Mother and son are also dropping anchor
43:22All right, let's go figure out how to get to Medellin
43:24Medellin
43:25Hola, English?
43:27English?
43:29We're looking to get to Medellin
43:32Medellin

43:43Panama still
43:47Okay
43:49All right
43:50I thought we were in Colombia
43:51I thought...
43:52Well...
43:53Okay
43:56I don't understand where the heck we are
44:00Hola, hello, English?
44:02Yes

44:05I could start from Panama
44:07So you're right here
44:09Oh
44:11Okay
44:12So we're trying to get to Medellin
44:15Oh, Colombia
44:16Yeah, but we don't know how to get to Colombia
44:17You've got to first get to shore
44:20Oh, right
44:21We're on an island, are we?
44:22How did you guys get here?
44:24By boat
44:25Well, we got here by boat, but we have no idea
44:28Dylan and Jackie are still in Gunayala
44:31on Nargana Island
44:33170 kilometres from the Colombian border
44:37We're going to figure this out
44:39It is brain rattling that we've landed here
44:42And it's not where we thought it was
44:46And we don't know how the heck to get to Colombia
44:49But I'm going to try and keep positive
44:51Hola
44:53Colombia, see?
44:55What time does it go?
44:59It stays here today?
45:01Okay
45:04We might be a bit screwed
45:05We're in the final country
45:06Oh my days
45:08We made it
45:10This is nuts
45:12Molly and Tyler are the first team to land on Colombian shores
45:16We made it by the skin of our teeth
45:19Because immigration is literally just closed
45:21So
45:23Someone's looking down at us
45:25We just got to get through Colombia now
45:27Okay
45:29This looks like a hostel
45:31On the other side of the border
45:33Hola, Buenos
45:35Hola, Buenos
45:37Para Frontera
45:408 o'clock
45:428 o'clock

45:48Great
45:50Thank you
45:52We literally got to get through Colombia
45:54So, someone's looking down at us
45:55We just got to get through Colombia now
45:57Okay
45:59This looks like a hostel
46:00Okay
46:01Great
46:02Thank you
46:03We literally got here just after 5 o'clock
46:05So, we just missed the stamp out time
46:08Which is a bit dying
46:09So, we'll have to get at it tomorrow
46:11It's going to be a big day tomorrow
46:14We'll just be there as early as possible
46:15I want to be at the front of that queue
46:17Yeah
46:21Hola, gracias
46:22Gracias
46:24Farthest away
46:26Stuck on Narganar Island
46:27Dylan and Jackie have secured a room for the night
46:31Oh
46:32This past couple of days has completely annihilated our picture now
46:37We're going to have to be canny and careful to get to the end
46:41I had no idea how difficult doing the race was going to be
46:45The confusion of, are we in Colombia, are we in Panama
46:50That was, yeah, quite a tough pill to swallow
46:53We were almost at breaking point there
46:56But yeah, we're just trying our best to power through
47:05We still don't know how many hours we've got to go to get to Colombia
47:08We have no idea where we are
47:10A desert island in the middle of nowhere
47:13However, tomorrow I am switching into another gear
47:17Whatever it takes
47:18Whatever it takes
47:20I am going to get us to the checkpoint tomorrow
47:23Ah
47:25Alright, here we go
47:27Night, Dad
47:28Good night
47:34Oh, I hope you don't snore tonight, Dad
47:36I don't snore
47:37You have this tiny little that snores
47:40Shush, I do not snore
47:42Stop fibbing about me
47:44Shush, shush, Dad
47:45There's an 8am boat, let's get it
48:01Gracias
48:07Back on a boat
48:09Still a bit bumpy
48:10It's alright
48:11But it's better
48:12I had a good feeling about today
48:14Teams have one last boat trip
48:17Across the Gulf of Urabah
48:19From here, they can head directly by road to the checkpoint
48:24This is moving pretty quick
48:26If we get to the end of the segment first, it would have been worth it
48:29Just to taste it, at least once
48:32What, do you agree?
48:34Yeah, I'm up
48:36Arriving at immigration, Anita and Bal looking to close the gap
48:39It's a border crossing, is this?
48:42Let's get our passport stamped and let's get into Colombia
48:4560 kilometres behind
48:48Feels like Panama's not letting us go
48:52Whoa, look at that
48:54No way
48:55Bloody hell
48:56There's loads
48:58That's amazing
48:59Yeah
49:01Makes the journey all worth it
49:03Yeah
49:05Goodbye Panama
49:07Take three
49:09Finally reaching dry land
49:11We're here
49:13Yeah
49:15Two teams now on the home straight
49:17That was a quick boat
49:18I'm a bit windswip
49:20Get our bags and find the bus station
49:21Now we need to find a bus
49:24An express bus
49:26Oh
49:28Oh mate
49:30Garmin message, what?
49:31Don't send me back the other way
49:33Due to planned strikes on the approach to Medellin for safety
49:37Teams will be shuttled to Bettencourt Airport
49:40And will board the next available flight
49:43So there's strikes
49:45On the approach to Medellin, what does that mean?
49:47What does that mean?
49:49Due to rumoured armed attacks in the Antioquia region
49:52The Colombian police and army are on high security alert
49:56For safety, teams must fly to make a final approach to the checkpoint of Medellin
50:05Oh no
50:08This could be a game changer though
50:10Because if the flight's not till this afternoon we'll all be on it
50:13Oh God
50:14This is getting madder and madder
50:21Kind of sad about having to fly to Medellin
50:23Because I feel like we were really
50:25On track and on program
50:27But now it all depends
50:29What time the next available flight is
50:31It could change everything
50:34Unaware of what lies ahead
50:36Yahoo!
50:38Point it
50:39Now this is not your fault
50:41Anita and Bal are on the final crossing
50:44I think it might have broken down
50:57We're literally five minutes out of the port
51:00Oh my God
51:02We're literally just bobbing around
51:04I hope another boat doesn't come
51:05And passes us
51:06Passes us
51:07Passes us
51:08Oh my God
51:10What is going on today?
51:12Is your mechanic aboard?
51:18Keep your eyes peeled for any others
51:20I just don't want to see any other teams
51:23Whatever happens, we tried really hard
51:26And then
51:27And I'm proud of us
51:31I keep checking out my shoulders at home
51:33Still think Bal's just going to be a little fun
51:35We are having the nightmare journey, Dad
51:38After they're set back at sea
51:40Anita and Bal are making up time
51:43Right, let's go find out where these buses go from
51:46Oh no
51:48Due to planned stripes for safety you will be shuttled
51:53Tomorrow to Betancourt Airport
51:55And we'll board the next available flight
51:57They've missed the last flight departing today
51:59And must now wait until tomorrow to continue their race
52:04Tomorrow
52:06Wow
52:08Okay
52:10I guess we're stranded
52:13Is that everybody?
52:16Wow
52:18That's crazy
52:20It just makes everybody
52:30Two teams have arrived in Medellin
52:33Home to around two and a half million people
52:36A model of urban regeneration
52:39And one of Latin America's fastest growing cities
52:42Lying at its heart
52:45The fifth checkpoint
52:51Travel to a station Aurora Metro cable
52:55Take the cable car and await further instructions
53:00Estacion Aurora Metro cable
53:02Come

53:11Good afternoon
53:13Oh this is tense now
53:15I just hope that we've done enough to catch her
53:17I know
53:18The meter is on and there is traffic and I'm stressed
53:21We're actually moving
53:23I can taste the checkpoint already
53:25I need to be there
53:27Okay
53:28I think this is it
53:31I don't think there's anything I'm happy about right now
53:34Absolutely hating this traffic
53:38We are not moving at all
53:41I'm nervous
53:42Feeling quite stressed
53:43Yeah I'm stressed
53:44Because I don't even know where the other teams are
53:46Can't figure that out

53:58Scary
53:59It's great when you're focused like this.
54:07This city is ginormous.
54:09It's huge, isn't it?
54:12All the buildings are matching.
54:14You better like your neighbors here, because...
54:15Yeah, that's what I was about to say.

56:43Oh, wow!
56:45They've done so well.
56:46How did they catch up?
56:47Well done to them.
56:49Second place again.
56:51We're always second.
56:52Man, I was actually...
56:53This one, I actually thought we had a chance of coming first.
56:56Well done.
56:57That was really tough.
56:59Bal and Anita, they're behind us by quite some time, I feel,
57:06because we haven't seen them.
57:08And, um, Jackie and Dylan were first.
57:11Not...
57:13Not in sight at all.
57:16We've got around 300 left, I think.
57:29I felt like 36 hours ago we had about 800.
57:34Oh, no.
57:35Something crazy like that.

57:55This journey has been amazing.
57:57I will never forget this.
57:58...and eight countries...
58:00We're in the middle of nowhere.
58:03Keep your eyes peeled.
58:04Seeing you be strong makes me strong.
58:07The finish lane awaits.
58:09We've put ourselves through so much.
58:11We have to make it count.
58:13We've had highs.
58:14We've had lows.
58:16But it all comes down to this.
