00:00What's up, Knicks fans? Dexter Henry, Brian Fonseca here, a special edition of New York
00:17Got Game. Got to talk about some news going down in the NBA world that possibly could,
00:22not saying that it will, could involve the New York Knicks, hopefully sooner for some
00:27fans, maybe later, don't know. But news coming down today that Giannis Antetokounmpo has
00:35started talking, him and his representatives have been talking to the Bucs about his future
00:40and what's going on. Now, it should be noted the Bucs just came off of a loss to the Woeful
00:44Wizards. And apparently that might have been enough for Giannis where he was just like,
00:49yo, I can't do this. Still under 500. Speculating here, not saying he is. Could be saying that
00:53he doesn't want to do this anymore. They're below 500. He was out for a while. The roster
00:58hasn't been good. So obviously coming up is going to be the Knicks. Now, some people watch
01:02and it's like the Knicks always get thrown into every trade. But according to some reporting
01:05that we saw from late into the season from some people, the Knicks and Bucs were talking
01:12over the summer. They had an exclusive negotiating window towards the end of the summer, but nothing
01:16obviously happened. I guess the first question for me, Brian, when we look at this discussion,
01:21I like to use this word. Do the Knicks need Giannis? And if they do need Giannis, how does
01:31he help them? Obviously, he's a great player. He's one of the top three, four player, whatever
01:35you want to say in the league. They would love to have that on their team, but you got to
01:39give something to get something. Do they need Giannis Antetokounmpo?
01:42Maybe. Maybe. Now, we got into this in another video that will come out. The take will be
01:49delivered a lot differently there. Yes. So we'll keep it that way for now. But I do think
01:56you have to really entertain this for a couple of different reasons. One being that if Giannis
02:06is available for trade, that means he's available to 29 other teams. If it gets to that point,
02:11if it gets to that point, chances are you have other teams in your conference who are going
02:18to be interested. Detroit has financial flexibility. Miami is always looking for the next big star
02:25to join them, and they have financial flexibility now. Not a ton of picks, but more than they
02:29used to have. Atlanta is in an interesting situation where, hey, they look good without
02:36Trey Young. They might want to move on from Trey Young, who is on the last of a long-term contract,
02:42who will be a free agent and does not have an extension right now and don't know if he's going to get
02:47one. Yep. Orlando made a trade, but they have other trades that they can do. They have other
02:51contracts they can move. They have picks. And if you're the Knicks, you have to look at this in
02:57a couple different ways, but the main one is like the East has never been this wide open,
03:02and you're actually one of the favorites, if not the favorites, who come out of the East
03:06because Tyrese Halliburton's out, because Jason Tatum's out, because the Heat are ascending,
03:12but not quite to full-fledged contender level yet. Detroit's getting better, but Cade Cunningham
03:19and Jalen Duren, while I think they're both going to be all-stars this year, have not won a playoff
03:23series yet. Right. Orlando hasn't won a playoff series with this core yet. Like, this is the perfect
03:27time for the Knicks to take advantage, and you actually have the financial means to go and pull
03:33this off if it's available. So need, I think maybe, because if you do this now, it ensures that
03:43you're the favorite in the Eastern Conference. Right now, you might be, but if you make the right
03:47move, and it depends on who comes out of the deal, who comes back, because they might try to attach
03:52Kuzma. We can talk about that. I think the Knicks should look into this very, very, very diligently
03:57again, and they may need Giannis to get over the hump. Some people are going to look at this and say,
04:02okay, well, the Knicks, they've got depth this year. They went and tried to add some more depth
04:07in terms of Gershon Yavaselli, in terms of Jordan Clarkson. None of those players are
04:11Giannis Antetokounmpo. And granted, I've been someone who's been on record as saying Giannis Antetokounmpo's
04:16game may not necessarily age as well because of his limited offensive skill set, but he is still a top
04:22defensive player in the league. Top five player, period. Top five player, period. You'd be pairing
04:27him with Jalen Brunson, where if you want to say he's anywhere from a top seven to ten player,
04:31I think most people would agree with that. You then would have two of the top ten players
04:35in the league on your team. Would you be concerned, and obviously a lot of this depends on what the
04:39deal, and we'll get into this in a second, would you be concerned about the Knicks maybe losing some
04:43depth and being even more top-heavy than they are right now if they added Giannis Antetokounmpo?
04:48Unless it's Towns and whatever draft capital you have left to truthfully assemble that would
04:54interest Milwaukee because it takes two to trade. But I do think that if you're the Knicks and if
05:00you're in this situation, because I don't disagree. I think Cat's game may age better than Giannis' and
05:06also he hasn't been in the league as long. He's slightly younger. But at the same time, if we're talking
05:11about now, this season, right now, with no Tatum, no Halliburton, and all these other teams, while
05:19they're ascending, they haven't quite gotten into their prime yet. You're in your prime now. Jalen
05:22Brunson's in his prime right now. You could say so is Towns. But if this is about this season
05:28potentially, like what does it matter if Giannis' game, you know, doesn't age well? And that's where
05:36I'm kind of like, man, like this, I don't know if you do the, it's not like if, it's not like the
05:42season's a failure if you miss out on Giannis Antetokounmpo. But you also run the risk of, oh,
05:48now Miami put a package together and they got Giannis and now Giannis is there with Bam and whoever else.
05:53The interesting thing for the Knicks, though, is, you know, what's what kind of package can
05:57they put? And that's something I think that's going to be looked at a lot. What kind of package
06:01can they put out there? The Knicks are better suited to put out a package in the offseason
06:07if this trade would come. I agree with that. Right? Because they have more picks down the
06:11road. But the East is better next year. Right. And so this really, for me, comes down to what's
06:15the urgency level on this? Yeah. It's like you said, what's the urgency for the Knicks right
06:19here? How badly do they want to try to ensure, as you said, that they are the favorites and
06:25their chances of getting to the finals? And I also would like to add a note, if they did
06:29go make a move for Giannis, it's not even just this year. It helps better for this year.
06:34But Giannis, even though I said I don't think his game will age it well. He still has another
06:38couple years at the peak of his powers where he can be a dominant athletic force, can be pretty
06:43good on defense. That keeps the Knicks window with him and Brunson in their prime open pretty
06:49good. Assuming you can still keep an OG and an OB, assuming you can still keep a Mikael
06:53Bridges on this team. But what would you give up if you were trying to guess? I'm trying
06:59to keep it to as little amount of players as possible. Like, it's not going to be a
07:05Towns-Yannis one for one. But if it's a Towns-Randall, you meant one for one. Oh, just do it
07:10a Towns-Yannis? No, yeah, yeah. Oh, you mean like if there was going to be a... Because both of
07:13their contracts are the same virtually, they're split by hardly a million dollars. Both run
07:20for the same amount of time. Two years, so this year, next year, and then a player option
07:23for the last year. The Bucs are going to want picks. Right, that's the thing. So I do think,
07:26and we have to also consider like if Giannis does ask out, what leverage are the Bucs going
07:31to have? Do they want to appease him? Do they have any interest in appeasing him? What does
07:35Towns do for them? Does this become a three-team deal? Like there are a lot of different things
07:39to consider. So you have to consider Milwaukee's side of this as well. But from the Knicks perspective,
07:43I'm trying to, if I'm going to preserve the depth first and foremost, then yeah,
07:47you want to try to keep it to Towns plus picks. Because if you do some combination of one or two
07:53of your wings and a young guy or whatever, then you're stripping the depth. And then that's when
07:57you run into trouble. That's when you run into the trouble that the Phoenix Suns had where they
08:01were too top-heavy. Or even the Clippers where they've been too top-heavy. That's why you have to
08:07try to keep it to as little bit of an amount of players as possible. And if I'm Milwaukee,
08:12if I'm negotiating and if I'm Milwaukee, I'm looking at the Knicks and I'm like, yo,
08:16take Kyle Kuzma back also. Because they're also going to want something else. So it may be two for
08:21three plus Milwaukee gets all the draft capital. But again, a lot of these times, or a lot of times
08:26in this NBA, these deals become three, four team deals because you just need to move around a lot.
08:33And now with the current CBA situation, it's not going to be a straightforward deal unless Milwaukee,
08:39for whatever reason, like really, really wants Towns and just Towns back. But I don't think it's
08:43going to be that simple. So let's wrap on this quickly. If you're the Knicks and you can get
08:47the kind of deal where you can get not the one-for-one swap, because I do think that's not
08:51likely. And the Knicks would have more flexibility in the offseason. But if you can do it this season
08:55before the trade deadline, and we know December 15th is approaching where more players are available,
08:59January 15th then approaches where that's the real trade season, where even more players become
09:04available that you can throw into the deals. If you're the Knicks and you can go get Giannis
09:07Sancupo before the deadline and it does not disrupt too much of your depth, are you doing it?
09:12Yeah, I think you have to. I think if it's on the table, you have to, because if you don't,
09:17somebody else will. And that somebody else may be in your conference. And then that somebody else
09:21could be good. Because you can say what you want about the East, and you can say what you want
09:24about the state of the Bucs. Giannis is still the best player in the Eastern Conference, at least
09:27for right now. I know some people would probably want to put Jalen Brunson there. I think Cade
09:31Cunningham, you know, is in that conversation now. Giannis is there right now. Donovan Mitchell also,
09:35but, and we haven't even talked about the Cavs, by the way, who have been underwhelming this year,
09:39but are still going to be a threat. But Giannis is that dude right now. And if he, listen,
09:45we've talked about him potentially wanting to be in New York, like the potential of that
09:50happening. And even Brian Lewis told us like, yo, he has businesses in New York. A lot of people
09:53have businesses in New York, but at the same time, he recognizes the market. He recognizes
09:57the importance here. Like if, if it's on the table and if he wants to go to you, yeah, you have to
10:03make that happen. And you kind of owe it to Jalen Brunson to give him that kind of a running mate.
10:07It will be a good running mate for Jalen Brunson. We'll see how that all plays out. Interesting
10:11news around Giannis Antetokounmpo. We'll have much more to talk about here on New York Got Game.
10:15about Giannis' possibilities of the Knicks trading for him, if any of that will happen. And maybe
10:20some other moves that the Knicks could make. He's Brian Fonseca. I'm Dexter Henry. We'll
10:24catch you next time on New York Got Game.
10:25And thanks for watching New York Got Game. Boop shakalaka.
