00:00The Giannis trade rumors are heating up as we get closer to the February 6th NBA
00:05trade deadline, but is he closer to being a Knick?
00:08It's time to talk about all the story.
00:10The line surrounding Knicks basketball with New York guy game host Dexter Henry.
00:14My call.
00:15My friend, what's going on?
00:16My man, let's go straight into this because we've talked about the.
00:20Cat and Mike Brown storyline.
00:22Sham Sharania tweeted two-time MVP.
00:25Giannis is ready for a new home at the February 5th NBA trade deadline.
00:30Or in the offseason as several rival teams make aggressive offers to the.
00:35And the franchise is starting to listen to.
00:40Our question here, do the Knicks need to be one of those rival teams that are calling for
00:44Giannis?
00:45And what would an aggressive offer look like from Leon Rose?
00:50Yeah, no, it's a good question, Brandon here.
00:53And I would say for the first.
00:55Do the Knicks need to be one of those teams making an aggressive offer for Giannis?
01:00I would say yes.
01:01Now, the better question is, how does that come about?
01:05Because the Knicks really don't have the assets and we don't know exactly what Milwaukee wants.
01:10I think the other part of this, too, is does Giannis want to come to New York and will.
01:15The Bucs then acquiesce him to come to New York.
01:17The reason I think the Knicks should do it is we saw this recent.
01:20Stretch where they were two and nine, they lost four in a row before they just won three in a row.
01:24We.
01:25We've seen the defense slip over the past month.
01:28Giannis would definitely impact this.
01:30Defense, but I think so much of it has to do with what would the Knicks be giving up?
01:33What will be going out?
01:35How much of their roster would or would not be gutted?
01:37And that's why I believe if you're looking.
01:40Looking at an offer from the Knicks that could work to get Giannis Antetokounmpo is not going to be straight up.
01:45Between the Knicks and the Bucs is going to probably involve a third team or even a fourth.
01:50So it's going to take a lot.
01:52And what the Bucs, I think, are going to want, what most.
01:55Most teams want when they're trading a star of this magnitude and they're trying to rebuild.
01:59They're going to want.
02:00They're going to want young players and they're going to want draft capital, capital, excuse me.
02:03The Knicks don't have.
02:05A lot of that.
02:05They've got some young players, but not really ones that you can build a franchise around.
02:10And the Knicks draft capital, they gave up a lot in that deal for Mikkel Bridges and some of the other traders.
02:15They have made over the years.
02:16So I think it's going to be difficult, but Leon Rose.
02:20The Knicks and company are going to have to be creative.
02:22Can you get a team involved?
02:25Like a New Orleans Pelicans and maybe try to reroute Zion Williamson to.
02:30Milwaukee, a young player that they might want to build around that has an NFL style contract.
02:35Where they can get out of his contract due to his injury protections that they have.
02:40Could you do something like that where you can also get some picks from New Orleans that can be added?
02:45But then along with the Knicks picks and the pick swaps that they have going forward, it makes.
02:50More sense, Brandon, I would say it's easier for the Knicks to probably get a deal done.
02:55The draft, but we're talking about right now, it is a small window for the Knicks and their.
03:00Trying to win.
03:01And if there is any chance that Giannis could come to New York, I can assure you.
03:05Leon Rose and company, they've already been making phone calls.
03:08They will be making more phone calls.
03:10Before the six, I think what the Knicks have to do is they can't get into a bidding war straight up.
03:15If other teams like the Heat get involved in some other players, the Knicks are going to lose because some of those teams have won.
03:20But if they can get a third team involved that can help facilitate this deal, if Giannis does.
03:25If they want to come to New York, then I can see this getting done.
03:27All right.
03:27So let's say Leon Rose puts together a.
03:30Masterclass and he's able to get a third or fourth team involved and he actually pulls this thing.
03:35If they pull this off, would it still be championship or.
03:40Or would they get kind of like a feel out year and then next year would be.
03:45championship or bus with the honest.
03:47I still think it's going to be championship bus.
03:50Now, this is also assuming, Brandon, that Giannis, who's dealing with the injury right now, though.
03:55He's still self-diagnosed and we still haven't had updates on that.
03:57But if Giannis did come.
04:00To this Knicks team and you pair him with Jalen Brunson and again, I'm also assuming that this.
04:05Team isn't too gutted and most of their top seven is still intact.
04:09Maybe.
04:10Gave up a player or two out of that to bring Giannis in.
04:12I still think it's going to be championship or bus because of.
04:15What has, I will at least say this, even if it's not championship or bus, it's going to be finals or bus because of what.
04:20What has happened in the East because the Celtics don't have Jason Tatum because the Pacers don't have Tyrese Halliburton.
04:25Because this looks like a great window in terms of this year for the Knicks to get to the finals, even with.
04:30Without Giannis, so if you add Giannis and pair him with Jalen Brunson, it's still at least going to be.
04:35Finals or bus for some people, it's going to be championship or bus.
04:37And I understand that.
04:38But I think at least finals or bus.
04:40If you do add Giannis Antetokounmpo to this roster, because the level.
04:45Expectation will have gone up even further.
04:47Well, that Giannis news, man, for that to break like that.
04:50It's got a lot of people talking, especially since the Knicks have a guy on their.
04:55Roster now in a Carl Anthony Towns that a lot of fans want on this trade.
05:00But as you know, it's going to be hard to kind of move him because of his contract.
05:05A man was benched in crunch time again.
05:07Mike Brown decided to go with Mitchell Robinson.
05:10Instead of Cat, Cat kind of downplayed it.
05:12You're in locker room after the game.
05:14He said he saw.
05:15He saw what he saw.
05:15We got to win.
05:16That's the most important thing.
05:18I'm reading between the lines.
05:20Doesn't seem like he's happy with his role, Dex.
05:22So does this arranged.
05:25Marriage look like it is headed to divorce.
05:30I mean, look, so much of this depends on a lot of what happens in the next couple of.
05:35Days, look, if the Knicks can move and a lot of Knicks fans have been asking for this,
05:38if they can move Cat.
05:40In a deal where they can get Giannis, they're going to do that.
05:42They're going to definitely try to do that.
05:45The problem, Cat has not had a good season.
05:47We could be straight up about it.
05:48Cat is shooting.
05:50Career lows from the field at the rim and also from three.
05:55He did not have a great shooting night again last night.
05:57He wasn't in foul trouble, which has plagued him a lot.
06:00This season, constantly getting in foul trouble, a lot of silly fouls, a lot of offensive fouls.
06:05He just had a bad shooting night last night.
06:06And I talked about this after the game.
06:08I thought Mike Brown.
06:10The decision of the lineup he went with to close the game was very interesting.
06:13He went with Mitchell Robinson.
06:15He went with OGN and OB, Mikel Bridges, Deuce McBride, and Jalen Brunson to close that game.
06:20So another strong defensive lineup.
06:21And you just mentioned there, Brandon, we saw this again on Saturday.
06:25Now, that was a little different.
06:27Cat also had a terrible game.
06:29He fouled.
06:30He fouled out of that one and he had picked up his fifth foul pretty quickly into the fourth quarter.
06:34So he.
06:35He wasn't available to be on the floor, but Mike Brown has shown that he is willing to go with the.
06:40Lineups that either has got him the lead or will play defense for him down the stretch.
06:44He did.
06:45He said again last night, I think the Knicks have had optionality in terms of what bigs they want to play.
06:50Can they play both bigs together?
06:52Mike Brown has leaned into that.
06:53But look.
06:55Cat has talked about multiple times this year.
06:58He's had to make sacrifices.
07:00And you talked about in terms of his role, Brandon.
07:02Mike Brown has talked about that too.
07:04Cat.
07:05And hasn't just got on the same page.
07:06The bottom line is performance, right?
07:08At some point, either.
07:10You're performing or you're not.
07:11Cat has not performed well this year.
07:13And I do think if the Knicks could.
07:15Upgrade, which is hard to do in terms of a player in Giannis who doesn't have the.
07:20Offensive skill set that Cat has, but is a much better defensive player.
07:23And that's the area where the.
07:25Knicks need to level up.
07:26I think if they can do that, they will.
07:28If not, it really comes down.
07:30Two cats just got to be better.
07:31If he's still going to be here past the trade deadline, he's got to be better.
07:35He's got to be on the floor for the Knicks so they can use his spacing ability.
07:39They can use his off.
07:40Offense, he's got to shoot better.
07:41He's got to cut down on the silly fouls.
07:43If you can do that.
07:45We know Cat can be a good player.
07:46We saw it last year in the playoffs.
07:48He had big time games for this team.
07:50The problem is just consistency and will he be on the floor?
07:54That's the thing.
07:54So I.
07:55I think if he doesn't do those things, Brandon, then yes, this is not a.
08:00You called it an arranged marriage that is going to last and there might be a divorce.
08:04I.
08:05Can't really speak to whether Cat is unhappy.
08:06I think every player wants to play of his caliber.
08:09They want to be.
08:10On the floor, as you know, as a former athlete, you want to be on the field.
08:14You want to be on the court.
08:15When it matters, but it's about performance.
08:17And if you're not performing, the coach has decisions to make.
08:20And that's what Mike Brown has done.
08:21We're talking about a team that's won three in the.
08:25And it's like something still feels off with this.
08:30I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but Nick's basketball just isn't as fun to watch.
08:35Cover right now as it was compared to before the NBA Cup championship.
08:40Can this team as it is right now get out of the East?
08:45Yeah, I still believe so.
08:47I still believe so because.
08:50When you look and this is obviously Brandon talking if they don't make any changes.
08:55I don't think the Knicks are as bad as they were during this two and nine stretch that we saw from them.
09:00Maybe they're not as good as that run.
09:05That we saw in December up to the cup.
09:06Maybe they did the truth lies somewhere in between.
09:09But I do think this Knicks.
09:10Team is good.
09:10I think they have to clean up some things on defense.
09:13I think they can still add some pieces.
09:15As soon as they don't get a Giannis, can they make a move on the fringes?
09:18I think that's something they can do.
09:20So, yes, I do think this team can still get out the East.
09:23You know, I personally still.
09:25Despite seeing that two and nine stretch, I still would pick them in a series, you know.
09:30Over the Pistons and much respect to the Pistons and their defense has been great.
09:33And they're at the top of the East right now.
09:35And Boston's played well, even without Jason Tatum.
09:37I'd still take the Knicks over them in the series.
09:40The Knicks have to show it.
09:41What I will say, Brandon, is this three-game winning streak after the four.
09:45Four-game losing streak in the two and nine stretch, they're not quite out the woods yet.
09:48They still got to show a little bit.
09:50I think when you say they're not as fun to watch, I still think there's that bad taste lingering.
09:55In the mouth of a lot of fans from that two and nine stretch.
09:58And they're like, look, you.
10:00You guys have to show me some more.
10:01And the Knicks have a very interesting stretch of games that they started last night.
10:05They have 10 games in 16 days with three back-to-backs, starting with last night's game against Sacramento.
10:10They have a big back-to-back tonight against Toronto.
10:12How are they going to respond?
10:14What are they?
10:15What are they going to do?
10:15And we just talked about Caronty Towns, seeing him play a little bit better, seeing Mikel Bridges be a little better.
10:20I think if fans start seeing that stuff again, they'll feel better.
10:25But right now, it's kind of in a show me what you got until we get to the All-Star break.
10:30I completely understand that.
10:31Yeah, I ain't heard of go New York, go New York, go in a long time around these parts.
10:35You talked about how they're on a back-to-back.
10:37They're up in Toronto.
10:38You got the watch party tonight.
10:40You're in the studio.
10:40Go ahead and plug that for the people.
10:43No, man.
10:44We're going to be in the studio.
10:45My man E.J. Stewart from WFN will be rocking with myself and Brian Fonseca.
10:49Be there to work.
10:50Watch this Knicks-Raptors game.
10:51Look, this is a big one.
10:52We always like to see the Knicks and Raptors.
10:55You see quickly, you see Barrett playing against their former team.
10:58But the Raptors right now, they're tied with the Knicks.
11:00Knicks for third in the East.
11:01They've won four in a row.
11:02The Knicks have won three in a row.
11:04The Knicks are trying to win.
11:05They're trying to gain separation.
11:06They're trying to get back up to that two seed or even higher.
11:09So to me,
11:10right now with the stretch I just talked about,
11:11the Knicks need to keep this thing going.
11:13They need to keep the good vibes going.
11:15Their defense has been better in this three-game winning streak.
11:17I know one of those games was against the Nets,
11:19and they won by...
11:20But they did have some good defense in the third quarter against the Sixers.
11:23They played fantastic.
11:25defense in the fourth quarter last night against the Kings.
11:27The defensive effort has to be there from the start.
11:29So that's...
11:30That's the thing to watch tonight.
11:31But come watch with us.
11:32Watch party.
11:33New York got game.
11:33Live watch party should be...
11:35Another fun one as we tap in.
11:36We haven't done one in a couple of weeks,
11:38so this should be a good one.
11:38All right.
11:39Dex.
11:40Appreciate you, my man.
11:45We haven't done one in a couple of weeks.
