00:00U.S. Patent Office says AI can help invent but can't take credit.
00:05If you wanted ChatGPT inventor on a patent, the U.S. issued a reality check.
00:10The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, USPTO, updated guidance on generative AI in invention.
00:16AI can help invent but cannot legally be the inventor. It's more lab assistant than mad scientist.
00:21In a notice obtained by Reuters, USPTO, Director John Squires said,
00:26Generative AI is treated like any other tool. Think microscopes or coding software.
00:32AI can brainstorm, analyze, and suggest ideas, but a real human has to be the one who actually conceives the invention.
00:39According to the guidelines, AI systems may help generate concepts or designs, but they don't get legal credit.
00:46Only natural persons, aka actual humans, can be named as inventors.
00:51This reinforces a previous ruling from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit,
00:55which firmly decided that AI doesn't get its name on patents no matter how clever it gets.
01:01So while your AI might help you design a new drug, write code for a medical device,
01:05or dream up the next big hardware breakthrough, it still won't be signing the paperwork.
01:09You will.
01:11And no, adding a robot name just for vibes still doesn't count.
01:15What's new isn't the rule, it's the clarity.
01:18The USPTO says there won't be a special AI lane for patent applications.
01:22If you used AI while inventing something, your submission will be judged the same way as any other.
01:28If multiple humans worked with AI on an invention, the usual joint inventorship rules apply,
01:33just like they would in any team project that somehow didn't explode into chaos.
01:37This update matters a lot for industries using AI in complex areas like drug discovery and advanced engineering.
01:43It gives companies more confidence that AI-assisted breakthroughs can still get patent protection,
01:48as long as there's a human brain behind the wheel, even if the AI was doing most of the heavy lifting.
01:54So no, AI isn't getting its own Nobel Prize or patent portfolio anytime soon.
01:58But it is officially recognized as the world's most overqualified assistant,
02:03and one that still can't sign legal documents without a human babysitter.
02:13so I'm not locking up all the powers that happen.
02:16They have the no bombers in lana realm until you think of those that?
02:21Ok.
02:22It's brilliant.
02:23It seems to me that I'm lucky enough for you using AI-assisted breakthroughs to navigate this journey.
02:28I don't know where I'm still within the half-erald psychic.
02:32Got to have a change in order to decide to take the degree of emulate.
02:36We're able to avoid어 традиions because it is the skill of persistence.
