00:04Google has decided that hopping between search tabs is so last algorithm.

00:10This week, the company revealed it's testing a new hybrid feature that fuses its AI overviews,

00:15the bite-sized summaries that now greet many search queries, with its increasingly popular

00:20conversational AI Mode.

00:22AI Mode, powered by Google's Gemini model, has been rolling out since May in the US and

00:26globally since August.

00:28It lets users chat directly with the AI in a casual back-and-forth style, perfect for

00:33when your quick question mutates into a 40-minute deep dive.

00:37But until now, getting into this mode required clairvoyance.

00:40Will this question end up needing a whole conversation?

00:44Or can I get away with a normal search like it's 2012?

00:47Choose wrong, and you'd end up clicking back and forth like an indecisive shopper.

00:51Google's test aims to end that awkward dance.

00:55For now, when users see an AI overview at the top of their search page, they can immediately

00:59slip into a conversational exchange.

01:03It's Google saying, look, just start wherever.

01:10For now, the experiment is rolling out globally on mobile, presumably because that's where

01:17All this coincides with OpenAI triggering its own internal code red, delaying other projects

01:22to sharpen its chat experience as the AI competition heats up.

01:26Google, meanwhile, is basking in Gemini's momentum.

01:29The model recently hit more than 650 million monthly users, boosted by upgrades like the Nano

01:35Banana image model.

01:37And if Google manages to blend Gemini's 650 million conversational users with Search's

01:42whopping 2 billion monthly AI overview users, it could score a massive adoption win.

01:49As Google Search VP Robbie Stein put it, you shouldn't have to think about where or how

01:53to ask your question.
