00:00We're not really sure of the specifics on his injury but at some point he was injured and became blind and he ended up in a giant otter rehabilitation center in a place called Karanambu which is in Guyana. He received excellent care but because he was blind he wasn't able to be released back into the wild. He ended up here at Jacksonville Zoo so he would have a safe environment to live in and hopefully eventually have pups of his own.
00:30The female that we have in her name is Token Hontens and we're going to call her T for short. We did what we call a physical introduction and put them together. We watched them really carefully and they did great and have been together ever since.
00:44When he came over to their new exhibit which is a larger area with a lot of different complexities in the exhibit T the female helped him learn his new environment so he kind of glued himself to her basically and went everywhere she went.
01:02So he was able to navigate kind of safely by staying close to her. She also gave him the confidence to feel like he could go out there and kind of explore a little bit.
01:13At the very beginning you know he did bump into something so he had little scrapes on his face and it was a little challenge at the beginning so you know anything new you always have to learn and kind of get through that initial period but with her help he was able to safely navigate around and so now he does great and he knows his environment really well.
01:32It's good to ask for help. It's good to have a friend. He was a good friend to Buddy and helped him and guided him through his difficult times so having a friend to help you get through things is great and just knowing that you know after all the hard struggle and getting through the things that are really challenging and are hard on a day to day basis that you know it's going to get better at the end and you're going to be okay at the end.
