00:00Izu es un buen chico, 5 años y va a ser 6 de octubre.

00:08Es uno de los cachos que no es tan agresiva y no es muy agradable.

00:22Often times when we first let them out in the morning, Mina will kind of tackle him and Oshana will come and tag team behind him.

00:30And then he'll chase them for a little while.

00:32And eventually though, he is a proud guy and he'll break off with that and lay in the sun and take in the morning.

00:40Izu and five other individual lions, including Mina and Oshana here, came directly from South Africa where they had been hand reared.

00:49They were brought here on bottles and this allowed us in the United States to open our jean pool up with new stock.

00:57He's fathered four litters comprising of 12 individuals.

01:02As the first batch they would like to jump on him and pull on his mane and he was so tolerant of that.

01:11It was just so fun watching what a great time those kids had with him and that he had with them.

01:18Izu really loves his bones.

01:21He gets bones two times a week and he absolutely loves boxes.

01:26And that's his favorite toy over anything else.

01:30One of my favorite things about working with Izu is in the morning when he comes off exhibit,

01:36he makes direct eye contact with you and gives you a morning greeting.

01:40And that's just the best way to start your day.

01:43There he goes.

01:53We're out at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park celebrating our lion's ninth birthday.

01:57We have cake and cardboard animals to play with.

01:59They should be busy for the rest of the day.

02:02When they first came out the door Izu bolted out heading to the first thing he could see.

02:07We have three cakes positioned throughout the exhibit.

02:10Of course they're going to take food before they'll go for anything else.

02:13So the first cake he went to he made a beeline for it.

02:16The girls followed right behind, saw the cake on the left, went for that one.

02:20Some of them went up onto the rock by the glass for the presents that were up there.

02:25And then they've just been since tearing into those cakes and licking them down and breaking them apart and having a blast.

02:32Cakes are made up of pretty much everything a lion likes.

02:35All different forms of meat that we offer them here at the park.

02:38There's beef shank, beef heart, there's bones, ribs, chicken broth, chicken pieces, everything that they like.

02:46It's basically a meat cake.

02:48The animals were created by Dave Cuthbert and his team of volunteers.

02:52We really appreciate those.

02:54They went way over the top to build these animals.

02:57They're large, the biggest ones we've ever had and the most we've ever had.

03:00So they're all over the place.

03:01The animals have a variety of choices to attack.

03:06Well, lions, they're competitive feeders.

03:08As most people know, when they get into a kill, they all want to fight for their share, the lion's share.

03:14So when they did get into the one cake that had three femurs into it, the two girls were kind of a little tug of war over that

03:20until they're going to be able to break that apart.

03:22That is pretty much just like a kill would be in the wild.

03:26It's one thing with multiple bones in it.

03:29So there might be a little fighting over that.

03:31That's where it's undone.

03:33And over a minute of it.

03:34And that's how it opens and makes nutrients.
