00:00The Conservatives have got a bit of a cheek to criticise Labour on criminal justice, given what they did to our judiciary and to our policing, I think was in itself criminal in terms of its impact.
00:12We came into prisons bursting with prisoners and we came into neighbourhood policing having been decimated.
00:20To deal with the court backlog, to make sure the victims of some of the most serious sexual crimes are not waiting so long that they drop out and give up because it's too much.
00:33And we're looking to reform the number of trials that go to jury so that we can speed up access to justice because justice delayed is justice delayed.
00:43And bear in mind, already 90% of cases are dealt with by magistrates' courts.
00:49And of the remaining 10%, 7% of those are people who plead guilty, so they don't go to jury anyway.
00:57So we're talking about 3% of cases that currently go to juries.
01:01We're looking at speeding that process up so that we get faster access to justice.
01:06And we put victims first, not allow criminals to play the system, to play for time, to run down the clock and hope that their victims walk away.
