Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp says that the Conservatives will work with Labour backbencher MPs who disagree with government plans to restrict jury trials in England and Wales. Philp calls jury trials an "ancient right", and says Labour is trying to restrict them "simply because they are not investing properly in the court system". Labour's Justice Secretary David Lammy has said the reforms are necessary to clear the backlog of cases in the courts system.

00:00Well, we will defend our ancient rights to jury trial.
00:04It's been around for hundreds and hundreds of years in this country.
00:07In their desperation, the Labour government is trying to get rid of jury trials
00:11simply because they are not investing properly in the court system
00:13and David Lammy is so incompetent he can't run the Crown Court system properly.
00:19We don't think scrapping jury trials is the answer.
00:21That undermines people's ancient civil liberties.
00:24We'll certainly be voting against those measures
00:26and if there are enough Labour backbenchers who disagree with the government,
00:30perhaps we can defeat them.
