00:00Chancellor Friedrich Merz welcomed Prime Minister Donald Tusk for the 17th German-Polish government talks in Berlin on Monday.

00:08Their meeting comes after EU foreign and defence ministers met in Brussels and as Poland seeks to deter Moscow's recent provocations.

00:16Russian fighter jets recently triggered air raid sirens in Poland.

00:20The country wants to foster stronger relations with Germany, but there is also mistrust.

00:24However, Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasised the importance of solidarity.

00:42Expert Dr. Kai Olaf Lang describes German-Polish relations as paradoxical.

01:11According to Dr. Lang, Polen sees itself as the regional power in Eastern-Central Europe and wants to be treated as such.

01:21It took me a little bit of time in the last few years to convince our German partners to be treated as a common task.

01:33As the government in Warsaw seeks more direct cooperation on security issues, the reality on the ground seems to be different.

01:41Und wiederum hat sich der Eindruck vertieft, Deutschland habe zwar eine Rhetorik der Einbindung und der Aufwertung Polens,

01:53aber wenn es dann wirklich darauf ankomme, dann werde Polen eben nicht berücksichtigt.

01:57Can this paradoxical situation develop into a strong German-Polish security partnership in the future?

02:27Heute macht der polnische Ministerpräsident Donald Tusk deutlich,

02:33Entscheidungen über die Sicherheit in Europa dürfen nicht über Polen hinweg entschieden werden.

02:37Und der deutsche Bundeskanzler Friedrich Merz muss nun beweisen,

02:41dass er Polen als strategischen Sicherheitspartner ernst nimmt.
