19:46Before we go, I want to point out that today is World AIDS Day when we honor those who lost
19:52their lives to this devastating disease and highlight the ongoing movement to contain
19:58and eradicate it.
19:59I am deeply troubled to see that for the first time since 1988, the U.S. government has directed
20:06employees to not commemorate World AIDS Day.
20:10It is hard to not feel like our community is once again being targeted and devalued by
20:16our leaders, especially when there have been dozens of other observances that went ahead
20:21this year from Anti-Communism Week to National Energy Dominance Month.
20:26At a time when our country has cut foreign aid programs, research and PEPFAR funding, raising
20:33awareness is as vital and lifesaving as ever.
20:37Ignoring communities affected by AIDS brings back painful memories of our government's shameful
20:44negligence in addressing this epidemic and inflames the stigma that still rages on to
20:50this day.
20:50The AIDS crisis is not over and neither is our fight against it.
20:54And no matter what anyone in power says, we will not be silent when we know all too well
21:01that silence equals death.
