00:00It's taken!
00:02Daniels for three.
00:03That is unbelievable!
00:07The Brisbane Lions flutting their way to back-to-back.
00:10But this match is coming alive!
00:16Hello and welcome to Offsiders, I'm Abbey Jelmy.
00:19The stakes were high in last night's AFLW Grand Final.
00:23For North Melbourne, it was a chance to become the first back-to-back premiers
00:26and put an exclamation mark on an unprecedented winning streak.
00:30For Brisbane, it was the prospect of dual men's and women's flags.
00:34It was a fierce contest early until one team dominated.
00:39Garner gets it, gives it to Sheeran.
00:41Play went on a little unexpectedly.
00:43And Sheeran kicks her first goal in an AFLW Grand Final.
00:48Bella Eddy to put Beruz in front.
00:51It was never in doubt.
00:53He comes down the line towards Sheeran.
00:55He's taking a good grab in front of Campbell.
00:57That's a hugely important mark from KDW.
01:00Silly, silly from Campbell.
01:02Just a little shove there.
01:04That's dumb.
01:04And she can't stay in that space.
01:06That's going to be 100.
01:06Otherwise, that should be 100 and 12.
01:08That's the same thing.
01:10Sheeran from the goal square gets a cheap one for the Roos.
01:14Campbell caught by O'Loughlin.
01:16Driven firmly into the ground.
01:18Head hit the turf.
01:19Sheeran gets another look.
01:20Sheeran kicks another goal.
01:22She's having a huge impact.
01:24Hanson's kick is one she would like back.
01:27But she's given it to Jaz Garner, who puts the icing on the cake from directly in front.
01:34A perfect season of domination by the Roos.
01:38It was never going to end any other way, was it?
01:46It's a pleasure to have your company.
01:48For our very last show of the year, I'm joined by Rana Hussain, Bruce Jitche and Jess Stewart.
01:52Now, Rana, you were there last night.
01:54I mean, a 27-match winning streak for North.
01:57Of course they were going to finish it off.
01:58Oh, it's the ending that we all knew was coming, yet it was still somehow very exciting.
02:04And there is absolutely no doubt what this meant to the North Melbourne side, because
02:08their celebrations were just elate.
02:11It's like the excitement was palpable from the team.
02:14And you could imagine there might be some complacency, but absolutely not.
02:18It was incredible.
02:19And Bruce, we do mention that winning streak.
02:20But that comes with a bit of pressure, too, that you've got to get it done on the big stage.
02:24Absolutely.
02:24Every game you win, the longer the streak goes, naturally it means it's closer to coming to an end.
02:30And, you know, you wake up on the day of a grand final game and you just really hope that
02:36we've done everything perfect till this point.
02:38We'd better not drop the ball at the finish line.
02:41And, you know, North Melbourne were just far too good.
02:45And Jess, as our resident Queenslander, we know that the Lions can play that chaotic brand of footy.
02:49You would have thought early maybe there was a chance.
02:52Yeah, I was pretty shocked early on just how much they were considered outsiders for the game
02:56because they were coming into this match, too, also on a pretty long winning streak.
02:59And, yeah, I thought personally if they were there, there may be a goal late towards the game.
03:05Brisbane are a pretty fit and strong team.
03:06They were going to run it out.
03:07But it was like that early.
03:09We got that taste of the match early and then it just broke open after that from North.
03:13But, yeah, they're too strong, too impressive.
03:15And what a story for the AFLW competition in the AFL.
03:20And it really has been just their year, their season.
03:22They're now two seasons.
03:24Are they two dominant runners?
03:26Is there such a thing?
03:27Look, I was one of those people that was kind of annoyed that they were so good at the beginning of the season
03:33because it felt like the story had already been written.
03:35But as we continue to watch them do their thing, you realise this is the new era of the AFLW.
03:42And what they've done is kicked the door open for that next evolution now.
03:46And so, like Emma Carney said, now we just wait for all the other teams to lift and get on their level.
03:53And that's exciting for the competition.
03:54And we see that every time you play North Melbourne, you really are pushed to actually find that second gear,
04:00that next level, as they say.
04:02And they're just leading the way.
04:04I agree with you.
04:05It is great that we can see the standard that AFLW can get to
04:08and the professionalism that these girls bring to the table.
04:10But this is what they call a coach killer because the game was in the balance in the second quarter
04:15and we already saw it in the opening pack.
04:16Shannon Campbell had what can only be described as a brain fade.
04:20Jess, she gave away 100 metres here.
04:22Now, this is what you don't expect when you've got to the decider.
04:25You just can't be doing that.
04:27It's just such bad discipline.
04:29Obviously, this didn't lose them the match,
04:31but it was such a critical juncture of the game.
04:34And 100 metres, it's a coach killer.
04:37You could see Craig Starsevich in the box and you'd expect better from someone that...
04:41Shannon Campbell, she was playing in her seventh grand final for the Lions.
04:44And she is one of the experienced heads, but she's certainly an excellent player.
04:48And there's a lot of the reason that they're in the grand final,
04:50like her skills and her expertise as well.
04:53So she probably would like to have that moment back.
04:56But Brisbane had four 50-metre penalties in that game last night.
04:59You can't do that in a grand final.
05:00That's going to cost you...
05:02You can't...
05:02Everything needed to go right for them to beat North.
05:04They had to do everything right.
05:06And those things aren't going to help in any way.
05:09And, yeah, I just shook my head at it.
05:12And up until that point, they were right in the game.
05:15And, you know, grand finals, anything can happen in a finals game.
05:19They're made up of moments.
05:21And in crucial moments, you need to make the right decisions.
05:24And that's one crucial moment, like you said.
05:27That's not why they lost the game.
05:29But it was a crucial moment that did really turn the game against them.
05:32They're made up of moments.
05:33It's also when you can put your name up in lights.
05:35And Isla Sherin put the finishing touch on an exceptional first season at North,
05:39claiming the best on-ground medal with a maximum 12 motes.
05:43It was unanimous runner, and for good reason.
05:45She had two goals and just every disposal, contested disposal, particularly, she was amazing.
05:50Yeah, every time you needed North to fight, to turn up, to land that impact,
05:56it was Isla Sherin that did.
05:58Ash Riddell, you know, got 38 disposals, broke a record of an AFRW grand final.
06:04But it was Sherin that actually could turn the game, take those moments,
06:08and really have that impact.
06:09And she got the crowd right on her side.
06:10And one of the biggest talking points was actually the venue itself.
06:13The Decider was sold out for a third straight year,
06:16with a crowd of just over 12,000 at Carlton's Princess Park.
06:21But for many, they're just crying out for the AFL to make the move to a bigger venue.
06:25We've seen this from commentators.
06:26We've seen this from fans.
06:27Do we see this potentially next season, Jess?
06:30Yeah, I'd hope so.
06:31Like, three straight sellouts now we've had in a grand final.
06:35I think at some point you've got to give the fans the opportunity to show up
06:38and prove to the AFL that the appetite's there for perhaps a, you know,
06:43large showing in the grand final.
06:45Which we saw in the first women's grand final at Adelaide Oval with 53 odd thousand.
06:49And it's hard with capacity too.
06:51Like, if Brisbane had hosted that grand final yesterday,
06:53if North had stumbled last week,
06:54then the capacity is going to be much smaller.
06:57It's played at Springfield, which is, you know, 7,000, 8,000 at Chocoblock.
07:00And that's kind of not what you want from a grand final perspective,
07:03but that's how the competition goes.
07:04But I think if you've got the opportunity here in Melbourne to play at Docklands,
07:08why aren't you taking that opportunity and letting the men show up?
07:11The crowds are one of the topics or one of the issues that the AFL would hope would improve
07:15with the women's next season.
07:17Yeah, and their strategy around that is to build consistency,
07:19to build the rituals within the fixture.
07:22They've talked about it all season,
07:23but it's bizarre then that they maintain this kind of roving grand final
07:27where if you had a grand final at Marvel year on, year out,
07:31you know that you could build around it,
07:32you could build that momentum and get the kind of 50,000 crowds
07:35that we have seen in the past.
07:38It is a strange strategy, but they've gone with that again
07:41because we're getting the exact same season next year.
07:44So, I mean, they're going for consistency.
07:47Who knows if it'll work?
07:48And I can't believe we're still asking this question,
07:50is the season in the right spot, guys?
07:52Because I feel like it's year on year,
07:54we still ask about whether or not the AFL have got it right.
07:57And we know with the NRL that they run the women's competition parallel
08:00and it seems to work.
08:02I think it works in the NRLW.
08:03I think this is the one...
08:05There's so much talk about the code wars
08:06and who does better things in each code.
08:08I think this is where the NRL has the win over the AFL
08:11and the AFLW and the NRLW.
08:13I think it works really well there.
08:15I don't like how they have the same grand final day.
08:17However, I think the women deserve their own clear air,
08:20which I think the AFL does excellently,
08:22but I just don't think this is where the competition needs to sit.
08:25I would like it to perhaps be earlier in the year.
08:28It's too late now.
08:29This is where it's locked in, so we can't do anything.
08:31But if they took that...
08:32They've added the wild card round next year,
08:34I would have liked to see maybe the grand final fall in that weekend,
08:37but obviously that's changed.
08:39And again, we can't look backwards.
08:40We've got to look forward and know that this is where it's locked in.
08:43Yeah, it's bizarre because on the one hand,
08:46when we have the clear air, we know ratings drop off.
08:50People are fatigued by football.
08:52I know I've switched gears a little bit into cricket mode.
08:55But then when we're in the men's season as well,
08:58and when it overlaps, then you have a logistical nightmare
09:01about where do games get played, double headers.
09:04The game is so long in and of itself.
09:06How do you actually make that work for fans in particular?
09:09So it's kind of a catch-22,
09:11and they've clearly gone with the halfway point
09:14where you get a little bit of overlap and a little bit of clear air.
09:17One thing we do know is we'll talk about it again next year, won't we?
09:20So we'll see what happens there.
09:21But moving on to Formula One,
09:23and for the first time in 91 days,
09:26Aussie Oscar Piastri has topped the podium,
09:28dominating the Qatar Grand Prix sprint
09:30to shave two valuable points off Lando Norris' championship lead.
09:34The Aussie will start from pole in the race proper,
09:37starting at 3am Eastern tomorrow,
09:38trailing teammate Norris by 22 points,
09:41who will start from second.
09:42So it's a 1-2 for McLaren at the start of the grid.
09:45Now, this is dynamite TV.
09:48This is unbelievable, Rana, that it's come down to this.
09:51And the real question Aussies want to know,
09:53after he had such what looked like an unassailable lead
09:56earlier in the season, can he do it?
09:58I know. I'm so thrilled for him.
10:00I'm actually jumping out of my skin.
10:01He's made a comeback.
10:03I think he can do it.
10:04It's going to be tough.
10:05Lando Norris is coming for him.
10:07He's said, I don't see why I wouldn't try and win this thing.
10:10And it feels like, and we actually know,
10:12that McLaren want Lando Norris to win.
10:16They've asked Piastri to kind of take a bit of a sidestep
10:18so that Lando Norris can take pole position.
10:21Which is phenomenal when you break that down,
10:23that you've got your boss saying,
10:24do you mind just stepping to the side?
10:26I know that you've wanted to do it, but...
10:27But like every good Aussie, Piastri said, absolutely not.
10:30I'm going to drive my heart out.
10:32And he had the best race of his life, he reckons.
10:35So I think he can do it.
10:37It's coming from behind, though,
10:39and we'll say it's going to be huge at 3am tomorrow morning.
10:41If he can do it,
10:42it's arguably the sporting story of the year.
10:44And we're going to talk about some big sporting stories
10:46later in the program as well.
10:47But we're moving on to football.
10:49And the Matildas thumped New Zealand 5-0
10:52in front of a packed house at Gosford on Friday night.
10:54And it was a fan favourite in Cairo Cooney Cross,
10:57who delivered one of the goals of the year.
10:59Bruce, it was phenomenal.
11:00It was a phenomenal performance by the Matildas.
11:02No Mary Fowler, no Sam Kerr.
11:05No worries.
11:06No worries.
11:07Absolutely.
11:08No worries for the Matildas.
11:09And it's great to see Joe Montemuro, the head coach,
11:13really establishing his style of play on this team now.
11:16You saw that last night.
11:17They're comfortable in possession.
11:19The passes through the lines and goals like this.
11:23You know, they had five different scorers in this match.
11:27And Cairo Cooney Cross has finished there.
11:31Absolutely world class.
11:32She's having a great season at Arsenal.
11:33And she's bringing it to the national team.
11:35Now, the Asian Cup is in March,
11:36which feels like it's a sneeze away
11:38with how quickly this time of year moves.
11:40How are we placed?
11:40How are you seeing it?
11:41Look, I think the Matildas were disappointed
11:43with the result in the UK against England.
11:46Their last time out.
11:48They've turned that around really quickly
11:50and they're building some really good momentum.
11:52Obviously, that competition is here on home soil.
11:56Huge expectations on the back of what they did
11:58at the Women's World Cup.
12:00We know everyone has merch because it was sold out.
12:02So make sure you get your Matildas kit out
12:04because we are ready to have it on home soil.
12:06Get your Matildas merch if you can.
12:08Amy Sayo, one of the players there,
12:11she's having a great season in Europe.
12:14In her press conference,
12:15she was really confident with the Asian Cup coming up.
12:19Great culture in the team now.
12:21You don't want to put too much pressure on the girls,
12:24but, you know, they could win it.
12:27They could well win the Asian Cup.
12:28That's what we wanted to hear.
12:29That's exactly what I wanted from you.
12:31Thank you, Bruce.
12:32But we will move on because in the A-League,
12:34Western Sydney have won their first Sydney derby in two years,
12:38beating Sydney FC 1-0.
12:39And, Bruce, if you're going to score your first club goal,
12:41this is a good time to do it, isn't it?
12:43Yeah, QOL, phenomenal goal.
12:44And it was a great advertisement for the A-League as well.
12:47It had all the intensity you'd expect in a derby.
12:50It was action-packed.
12:52You know, both teams hitting the woodwork
12:55and a 1-0 win.
12:57Wanderers really needed that win.
12:59There was a bit of pressure on their coach, Alan Stadjic.
13:02That'll come off a little bit now.
13:03And they've beaten Sydney FC,
13:05not only that it's a derby,
13:06but Sydney are top of the table as well.
13:08So a huge confidence boost for the Wanderers.
13:10And as you mentioned,
13:11just a perfect showpiece for the A-League,
13:12which is what the league needs at the moment.
13:14But we will be moving on to cricket.
13:16And our heads are still spinning from that two-day test in Perth.
13:19But now the question that's going to dominate the next few days
13:22in the lead-up to the second Ashes in Brisbane,
13:24simple as this.
13:25Usman or Travis?
13:26Rana, over to you.
13:27It's a simple question, isn't it?
13:28Oh, yeah, simple.
13:29You can make the case for both, right?
13:31I don't...
13:32What I don't want is for Uzi to be dropped
13:35and we never hear from him again
13:37and that's the end of his career.
13:39He absolutely does not deserve that.
13:40I don't think he's deserved the pile-on that has happened,
13:44that surrounded him.
13:45I would love to see him actually take this test on.
13:48I think we could use his slow pace
13:51in a wet, dewy Queensland test.
13:55So I'll go with Uzi.
13:56If he's going to make a triumphant return,
13:58this is the venue to do it.
13:59Yeah, I agree.
14:00I think...
14:01And it is his home test.
14:02I know he's originally from, you know, New South Wales,
14:05but Brisbane's his home now.
14:06And my view is,
14:07if the selectors are serious about Travis Head
14:09being the opener,
14:11perhaps past this summer,
14:13you stick with Trav at the top
14:15and you keep Uzi in the team.
14:17He doesn't deserve to just be dropped.
14:18He has to stay in the team.
14:19He's Usman Quadra.
14:20He's had 85 tests for Australia.
14:22He's excellent.
14:23But that's my view.
14:24And I just...
14:25It's a hard one,
14:25but because this, to me,
14:27England will go all out.
14:28They have to win this
14:29or it's really pack-up stations, go home.
14:31They'll double down on the basball
14:33and we'll all just wonder what...
14:34You know, go back to Noosa.
14:34You know, you may as well go back on a holiday
14:36because it's going to be impossible,
14:37I think, from there for England to recover from this.
14:39So they're going to go all out this week.
14:41The one thing we do know
14:42is it's going to be entertaining.
14:43Oh, yeah.
14:43I think as Travis Head said,
14:45he's like,
14:45if this was the first two days,
14:46the rest of the series is going to be off its head.
14:48Yeah, Travis Head.
14:49So we'll just have...
14:50We cannot wait to watch that.
14:51But also, as we've mentioned,
14:52this is our final show of the year.
14:54So we're going to look back
14:55on some of the great sporting moments.
14:57And no Australian sports story
14:59matched the highs and lows of Ange Postacoglu.
15:02After claiming the Europa League trophy
15:03with Tottenham
15:04and finally bringing Silverware back to the club,
15:07he was sacked just 16 days later.
15:09He then stepped into the top job at Nottingham Forest
15:11and that lasted just 39 days.
15:14Bruce, you got whiplash
15:15following whether he was up, down or around.
15:17But I think the real question is,
15:18are we going to see Ange at the top flight
15:21in the Premier League coaching again?
15:23I think the short answer to that is yes.
15:25I think Ange Postacoglu, he's won everywhere.
15:29He's gone.
15:31Just ask him.
15:31Forest.
15:32That was probably, in hindsight,
15:35not the right decision for him to take.
15:37He took it so soon after leaving Tottenham.
15:41Nottingham Forest were coming off a great season
15:44and were on a downward slope.
15:46And for Ange to implement his style of play
15:48does take a little bit of time.
15:51So, yes, I do think we'll see him back
15:53in the Premier League, but, you know,
15:56it's fair to say his reputation...
15:57Was he a glitch or a damaging one to take that role?
15:59Yeah, I think his reputation's been damaged
16:01in England, if you like.
16:04But I think his reputation is still very strong in Europe.
16:07You'd probably see him go out of the UK
16:10to another European top flight league
16:14and get back into the Premier League
16:16if that's what he wants to do.
16:17He might want to go to the La Liga
16:19or Serie A in Italy and coach there.
16:22He has the quality to do that.
16:23I think most people sit back and go,
16:2539 days to implement change.
16:27Seems like he wasn't given much of a chance,
16:29but that might be my Aussie spin.
16:31Who knows?
16:32But it's easy to forget that Sam Kerr
16:33was found not guilty of racially abusing
16:36a police officer in a court case earlier this year.
16:39Now, the footage of her foul-mouthed spray
16:41really divided Australians
16:42and the question over her captaincy lingers.
16:45Now, Bruce, you're of the view
16:46that she should give back the captaincy voluntarily
16:48when this story was first breaking.
16:51Sam has since come out and said,
16:52no, I'm a leader, it's what I do.
16:54Do you still hold your view
16:55or do you think that we'll see her be captain?
16:57Look, my view was always that
16:59if you're going to captain,
17:00not even your club,
17:02if you're going to captain your country,
17:03you're held to a higher standard.
17:05Yes.
17:06And, you know, I think I said at the time,
17:09if it was me, I'd give the armband back
17:12and, you know, fall on my own sword.
17:14She hasn't done that and that's fair enough.
17:18Montemuro is a new coach for the Matildas.
17:22Football Australia have basically given him
17:24that responsibility in terms of who your captain is
17:28is a footballing decision
17:29and we hire you to make footballing decisions
17:31and he's made the decision that Sam should be captain.
17:35It's probably the best football decision,
17:37not being within those four walls,
17:40but you also don't want the unrest in the team
17:42if she was to be stripped of the armband
17:44and all these sorts of things.
17:45So, totally understand that decision,
17:49but it's more than just football, I think,
17:51when you're captaining your country.
17:53And it's more than just football when you're Sam Kerr.
17:55Absolutely.
17:56It permeates beyond into the wider sporting conversation.
17:58But again, we're just going to have to wait
18:00and see how that one plays out.
18:01But one of the biggest sports stories of the year
18:03came when a former footballer uttered just one short sentence.
18:06I played in the AFL for 10 years for the West Coast Eagles
18:11and I'm a bisexual man.
18:14You are the first past or present player to say,
18:18I'm gay or I'm bisexual publicly.
18:23That's a really big thing to say.
18:26Yeah.
18:29It certainly was and it dominated the landscape,
18:31understandably.
18:32Mitch Brown, just bravery.
18:33We talk about bravery in sport,
18:35but that was true bravery, Laura.
18:37Yeah, it really was
18:38and it's kicked the door open now for many others
18:41or at least for people to have a conversation
18:43about who they are,
18:44who they want to be within the AFL.
18:47And that's something that has been,
18:49you know, we've been waiting for for a long time.
18:51I guess the question for me is,
18:53do we need people to come out?
18:55That shouldn't be the marker for us.
18:57The question we should be asking is,
18:59how do we make sure the AFL is a safe place
19:01where people feel like they belong?
19:03And I think Mitch Brown coming out has helped that conversation.
19:06So it is absolutely a huge gain for the competition.
19:10But what does the AFL do next?
19:12How do they bolster that message now?
19:14I think all eyes are on them.
19:15And all eyes have also been on 17-year-old sprinting sensation,
19:19Gout Gout,
19:19who just brought so much joy to us this year
19:21because it was last year that he broke Peter Norman's 200-metre record
19:25that had stood for the better part of half a century.
19:27But it's watching this school kid from Brisbane
19:31just light up the screens and our back pages
19:33that has brought us so much joy, Jess.
19:34And there's a reason why we're all thinking,
19:36hang on, how old is he in Brisbane?
19:37What could this possibly look like?
19:39Oh, everyone's done the math.
19:41They already know how old he'll be.
19:42He is a sensation.
19:44I actually, funnily enough,
19:45saw him earlier this week
19:46out at the Brisbane Lions headquarters at Springfield
19:48doing some training and some work with his coach out there
19:51in their kick room.
19:51So it was nice to see him with that bright smile that he always has.
19:54And he said hello and always so lovely, a good young man.
19:56And I think that's the first step for an Australian
19:59that we want to get behind in our sporting world.
20:01But his international hype is 100% real.
20:04And the funny thing is he competed for the first time
20:07at a senior meet this year.
20:09And the international talk about him,
20:11us here in Australia probably don't realise,
20:13but all the international media wanted to know about Gout Gout.
20:16They had questions about him.
20:18And I think that's what, it's so exciting.
20:19He's off at the Commonwealth Games next year.
20:21He's committed to that.
20:22He will race for us and just strap yourselves in.
20:25We've got six years.
20:26I love that.
20:26We haven't overhyped it.
20:28He's an international star and we're just waiting to see where he goes.
20:31But I think he is just someone that brings so much joy.
20:34And in 2025, it was a year of Reece Walsh really, wasn't it?
20:37He became a, or arguably the superstar of Australian sport
20:41with one of the greatest grand final performances in living memory.
20:44And he's gone on to star from the Kangaroos on debut as well.
20:47Now, Jess, we know about the toilet water gags
20:50and all the different things that he does.
20:51But in the NRL, they would put billboards of him everywhere if they could.
20:55Oh, they certainly would.
20:57And it was funny, in the week leading up to the NRL grand final,
21:00they had the open training sessions.
21:02And I remember seeing the iconic images of Beatlemania
21:04and the women, these women, young girls just like this.
21:08And it was like that.
21:09It was Walshmania.
21:10And then, obviously, they had that over in England with Reece Walsh.
21:13And he just embraced it too.
21:15He wanted to encourage the fans to get behind this sport
21:19that obviously hasn't been as prominent over there in the UK
21:22as it is here in recent years.
21:24And he is such a superstar.
21:27He has a few kind of weird tactics as to how he wants to kind of get involved
21:32with his younger fans through things like social media and TikTok.
21:35Yeah, we do remember the time the Broncos had to bring out a press release
21:38telling fans not to drink toilet water.
21:40And that legitimately happened.
21:42I know.
21:42And the funny thing is, you know, Michael Maguire drinking, you know,
21:45celebratory champagne out of a toilet bowl mug.
21:48Mini toilet.
21:49Yeah, so people have turned it into a joke.
21:50I think there's a bit of a secret hinge that I have that, you know,
21:54perhaps all of this is cleverly well-placed marketing ideas
21:57behind his PR team.
21:59Who knows?
21:59But it's working.
22:01But will I think it will impact his future years to come
22:04as a marketable superstar footballer?
22:07Who knows?
22:08But he is on a trajectory to superstardom.
22:11Well, we don't know what's in the toilet water in Brisbane,
22:13if I can say that.
22:14But 2025 was forever the year that Queensland almost won everything.
22:17It was the men's origin.
22:19NRL, NRLW, AFL.
22:21And as we've already seen, they almost made it to win the AFLW as well,
22:25going all the way to the decider.
22:26Jess pains me.
22:28Is Brisbane the sporting capital of this country?
22:30We could have had the double-double.
22:32And I could have been sitting here all morning going,
22:34the double-double, but we fell just short.
22:37But, well, we walk around Brisbane now saying,
22:40we are the sporting capital.
22:41Move away, Melbourne.
22:42We are the new modern sporting capital.
22:44We've got the Olympics coming.
22:46People come to town.
22:46I'm like, welcome to the Olympic city of Brisbane.
22:49It's very exciting.
22:50And it was such a rare thing to go within the space of seven days,
22:54have those two NRL, AFL teams go back,
22:57you know, win their respective competitions.
22:59We've got a new stadium on the horizon, too, that they're doing.
23:02And it's just, it is the place to be.
23:04There's a genuine buzz around the city.
23:06And this week, of course, we have the Test match, too.
23:09So that'll be a nice thing, just to be happy.
23:10Yeah, all right, all right.
23:11You've won everything.
23:12You have anything.
23:12We'll leave you with it.
23:13But as always, there were some beautiful sporting moments of the year.
23:16But one of the standouts was an Erin Phillips speech
23:18the night she was inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame.
23:21It really illustrated just how far women's sport has come
23:24since the daughter of Port Adelaide great Greg Phillips
23:26had to give up the game because there was no competition for girls her age.
23:31I can't imagine how hard it would have been
23:36to tell your 13-year-old daughter
23:37that she couldn't play the game that she loves anymore.
23:43And 27 years later, she's standing next to you in the Hall of Fame.
23:49It's just...
23:50APPLAUSE
23:51Oh, it still makes you a little bit teary.
23:59But now for the title of the silliest moment of the year,
24:02that might go to Peter Volandis.
24:03We're the first to say that the NRL has had an exceptional year,
24:07even if it started with the head honcho
24:08trying to convince Donald Trump
24:10to go to the NRL's Las Vegas extravaganza.
24:12Mr President, we want to introduce you
24:16to the toughest game on earth, Rugby League.
24:20We know you love physical, tough contact sports.
24:23There's no sport more brutal than Rugby League.
24:27Our players don't wear pads or helmets.
24:29Hope to see you at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas
24:32on Saturday, March 1.
24:34Thank you, Mr President.
24:35Just a strange moment in sporting culture, wasn't it?
24:39Oh, crazy things happen, don't they?
24:40But that's why we love sport.
24:42It is why we love sport and we love having you all on.
24:44And thank you so much for your time, as always,
24:46and we really appreciate it this week.
24:48But that is our program for today,
24:50and it's our last one for the year.
24:51So a big thank you to all of our panellists
24:54for their wonderful insights on another amazing year of sport.
24:57The crew for getting up early on their Sunday
24:59to put the show together each week.
25:01A special thanks to Danny Morgan,
25:03who is the heart and soul of this show
25:04and has made my rookie season such an enjoyable one.
25:07And a big thank you to you at home, our viewers, for tuning in.
25:11We'll be back next year when we celebrate the program's 20th birthday,
25:14so make sure you do join us from February 1st.
25:17But for now, here's a look back through
25:18some of the biggest sporting moments and memories from 2025.
25:22Take care.
25:24Glory, glory, Tottenham Hotspur!
25:27Huge breaking news to bring you.
25:29Massive breaking news.
25:30Ange Postacoglu is going to be sacked by Tottenham Hotspur.
25:34I actually quite liked him.
25:35But you can't end 17th of the week, you can't do it.
25:37We're just receiving word of a massive trade in the NBA.
25:40The Lakers have traded Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks
25:43in exchange for Luka Doncic.
25:45What?
25:46Yannick Sinner, who's been banned for three months for doping.
25:50Majority of the players feel like there is feverism happening.
25:52Honestly, he has a f***ing stupid and wife.
25:55She should hand back the captaincy voluntarily.
25:59The end is a penalty to the Wallabies and the referees were too weak to give it.
26:06The AFL has come under fire after reducing Isaac Rankin's penalty
26:10for a homophobic slur from five matches to four.
26:14I played in the AFL for 10 years for the West Coast Eagles
26:17and I'm a bisexual man.
26:20And the dream comes true in Evian for Grace Kim.
26:27Min Jin Lee battles the Texas ring in heat
26:30and now she's a three-time major champion.
26:34And the Australian driver will see the checkered flag first.
26:39Oscar Piastri wins the Miami Grand Prix.
26:42Three Grand Prix victories in a row.
26:45Vernick, Vernick seals it for New South Wales.
26:53Keane has done his own.
26:55And Tom Deaton goes in for Cleveland.
26:58The win for the two believers.
27:01There's one timeouts.
27:02Two seconds left.
27:04Keane for the win.
27:06Oh my God.
27:08I cannot believe this.
27:11Now Gert starts to stretch away.
27:13It stretch away.
27:14He does and he's done it.
27:16He's broken the 10 seconds again.
27:18And a glorious goal for Nicola Olisagas.
27:21I cannot believe I'm a world champion.
27:24Oh my God.
27:26Oh my God.
27:28The goal is the Bourbon victory.
27:30Goal from France made to Suncombe Super Netball champion.
27:35Australia win their first ever Asia Cup championship.
27:40Half goals for history by the club.
27:43And the legs of Melbourne come by triplex.
27:45Nothing ever, ever compares to this feeling right now.
27:48Into the barriers goes Oscar Piastri.
27:51And this time it looked like it was all of his own doing.
27:55And Poster Coglu has been fired.
27:58He was sat 90 minutes after the full-time whistle.
28:00It does seem incredibly unfair.
28:02A perfect season of domination by the Roos.
28:07They are back-to-back premiers for the first time ever in AFL W.
28:11Amazing scenes.
28:12And Brisbane get it done.
28:1747 point victors.
28:19Hufanga.
28:20She started it.
28:21And now she might have finished it.
28:24The Broncos are back on top of the rugby league world.
28:28And Walsh comes rampaging under the ball.
28:32Reece Walsh has licked it up.
28:34It's all over.
28:38It's been 19 years when the Broncos are back.
28:43Yes.
28:43She's got it now.
28:45Seven wickets for King.
28:47Best ever figures for an Australian in one day internationals.
28:51And it is a stunning century.
28:57An ashes spectacular from Travers Head.
29:00One of the all-time great performances in Test cricket history.
