00:00Miramax is suing Quentin Tarantino over plans to release NFTs based on his 1994 film Pulp Fiction.
00:07Tarantino announced plans earlier this month to release seven NFTs, non-fungible tokens,
00:12based on the film, including scenes from an early script that were cut from the final version.
00:17The NFTs will also contain Pulp Fiction art and commentary from Tarantino himself.
00:22Miramax filed a lawsuit and says it sent a cease and desist letter to the director
00:26claiming that it's in discussions about forging NFT partnerships based on its library of films
00:31and that Tarantino's agreement devalues those efforts.
00:34The lawsuit states Tarantino's conduct could mislead others into believing Miramax is involved in his
00:40venture and it could also mislead others into believing they have the rights to pursue similar
00:44deals or offerings when in fact Miramax holds the rights needed to develop, market and sell NFTs
00:50related to its deep film library. The Pulp Fiction NFTs would have a publicly viewable portion
00:56as well as content including the previously unseen script sections only visible to the owner.
01:01According to a copy of Tarantino's contract for Pulp Fiction, the director retained some rights to the
01:06film including soundtrack album, music publishing, live performance, print publication including
01:11without limitations, screenplay publication and so forth among others. Tarantino's attorney argued
01:16that the director was acting within his quote reserved rights, specifically the right to screenplay
01:21publication. Figuring out the limits on those reserved rights will be critical as
01:25NFTs were not something studios or filmmakers were thinking about in the early 90s.
01:30NFTs have become a hot commodity in Hollywood with stars and studios all vying for a piece of the pie.
01:36Warner Bros and Nifties is also launching an NFT avatar project based on the Matrix film franchise.
