The 'Kill Bill' director drew heat from 'Shang-Chi' star Simu Liu after giving his take on Marvel movies.
Transcript
00:00Quentin Tarantino has become the latest prestige filmmaker to critique superhero movies,
00:05saying Marvel stars are, quote, not movie stars, and one Marvel star is responding.
00:11During an episode of Tom Segura's podcast, Two Bears, One Cave, the host mentioned how there
00:17are few, quote, real movie stars today. His guest, Tarantino, agreed, saying this.
00:22But that is one of the, the legacy of the Marvelization of Hollywood movies.
00:30Tarantino clarified that he's not putting the films down, but when asked if he loves Marvel
00:35movies, this was his response. I don't love them, no, I don't. I know. I don't hate them,
00:40all right, but I don't love them. I mean, look, I used to collect Marvel comics like crazy when I was
00:46a kid. The filmmaker went on to say if these movies came out when he was in his 20s, he would have
00:51loved them, but given that he's almost 60, he's, quote, not quite as excited about them.
00:56My only axe to grind against them is they're the only things that seem to be made. And they're
01:02the only things that seem to generate any kind of excitement. He later said this.
01:06You have all these actors who have become famous playing these characters, but they're not movie
01:12stars. Captain America is the star. Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu
01:20shot back on Twitter. He wrote,
01:22If the only gatekeepers to movie stardom came from Tarantino and Scorsese, I would never have
01:27had the opportunity to lead a $400 million-plus movie. I'm in awe of their filmmaking genius.
01:34They are transcendent auteurs, but they don't get to point their nose at me or anyone.
01:38No movie studio is or ever will be perfect, but I'm proud to work with one that has sustained
01:43efforts to improve diversity on screen by creating heroes that empower and inspire people of all
01:48communities everywhere. I loved the Golden Age too, but it was white as hell.
