00:03Disney and Pixar's Incredibles 2 makes its North American debut this weekend, and tracking
00:08suggests the animated family film could do as well as $140 million at the box office — a
00:13record for an animated movie. The current record holder is fellow Pixar sequel Finding Dory,
00:18which took in $135 million domestically on the same weekend in 2016. Animated family
00:23movies aren't known for mega openings, but instead can enjoy a longer run than live-action
00:28summer event films. Disney is projecting a domestic start in the $120 to $140 million range for
00:33Incredibles 2, which focuses on a family of superheroes.
00:37Incredibles 2 is the first studio animated film of the 2018 summer season. The summer box office
00:42could use a big win after the disappointing performance of Disney and Lucasfilm Solo,
00:46A Star Wars Story. The season's big winner to date is Disney and Marvel's Avengers Infinity War,
00:52which is only the fourth film in history to cross $2 billion at the global box office,
00:56not adjusted for inflation. Meanwhile, Solo will have trouble earning much more than $350
01:01million worldwide. It's been nearly 14 years since The Incredibles played on the big screen,
01:06opening to $70.5 million in November 2004, on its way to earning $633 million globally,
01:12not adjusted for inflation. Incredibles 2 was directed by Brad Bird, who also wrote and helmed the
01:17first film. Along with Bird, Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, Sarah Val, Samuel L. Jackson and John
01:22Ratzenberger reprise their voice roles. New additions to the cast include Bob Odenkirk,
01:27Catherine Keener, Sophia Bush and Isabella Rossellini. In the sequel, the Parr family tries to balance
01:32having a normal life with their superhero powers before coming together to battle a new villain,
01:37Screenslaver. Incredibles 2 is the first Pixar release to hit theaters following Disney's
01:41announcement last week that animation chief and Pixar co-founder John Lasseter will exit the studio at the
01:47end of the year. Lasseter took a sabbatical late last year after saying he had committed unspecified
01:52missteps that left some employees feeling uncomfortable. Incredibles 2 will easily win the
01:57weekend. The female-led spin-off Ocean's 8 is expected to land at No. 2, with $20 million plus
02:02in its second weekend after opening to a strong $41.6 million last weekend. Also opening this weekend
02:08is Tag, an ensemble comedy from Warner Bros. Tag is tracking to open in the $12 to $15 million range,
02:13and is aimed at male moviegoers in particular. The comedy stars Ed Helms, Jeremy Renner,
02:19Jon Hamm and Hannibal Buress as childhood friends who, as grown men, continue to play an annual
02:24game of Tag. Isla Fisher, Rashida Jones, Annabelle Wallace and Leslie Bibb also star with Jeffrey
02:29Tomsic making his feature directorial debut. The story is based on an article in The Wall Street Journal.
02:35The weekend's third new offering is Sony's Superfly from Director X. The studio puts the film's
02:39expected five-day opening between $10 and $12 million, but that could be tough to achieve
02:44based on Wednesday's opening day gross of roughly $1 million. The film costs $16 million to make.
02:50The music-centric movie stars Trevor Jackson, Jason Mitchell, Michael Kenneth Williams,
02:54Lex Scott Davis and Jennifer Morrison, and centers on a career criminal who desperately tries to escape
02:59the Atlanta drug scene. So what will you be heading to the theater to see this weekend? Let us know in
03:04the comments. For The Hollywood Reporter News, I'm Lyndsey Rodrigues.
