00:05In a historic moment for Hollywood, Disney and Marvel Studios' Black Panther
00:09exploded at the President's Day box office, racking up a record-shattering
00:13estimate of $201.8 million for the three-day weekend and a projected $235 million
00:19plus for the four-day holiday frame. Those grosses are substantially higher
00:23than Sunday's estimates of $192 million and $218 million, respectively.
00:28The Ryan Coogler-directed movie, which is the first big-budget superhero film featuring
00:32a virtually all-black cast, secured the fifth biggest domestic opening
00:36of all time after storming past all expectations. The highly anticipated film claimed
00:41one of the top four-day grosses of all time after surpassing Jurassic World's $234.1
00:46million and landing behind Star Wars The Last Jedi, which raked in $241.6 million,
00:51and Star Wars The Force Awakens with its $288.1 million. Black Panther could climb
00:56even higher once weekend numbers are tallied Tuesday morning. Rival Studios
01:00are putting the four-day gross in the $240 million range. On Sunday alone,
01:05the movie grossed an estimated $60.1 million, the second biggest Sunday ever,
01:10behind Force Awakens, which grossed a slightly higher $60.6 million.
01:14Other records broken include the biggest opening for an African-American director,
01:17the top-scoring superhero film on Rotten Tomatoes with a 97% fresh rating, and the biggest
01:22February opening taking over from Deadpool, which took in $152.2 million over the four-day
01:28President's Day weekend in 2016. Black Panther is also being fueled by a diverse audience.
01:34According to Comscore, 37% of ticket buyers were African-American. Women turned out and forced
01:39to see the film praise for its strong female characters, making up 45% of all ticket buyers.
