00:00If you talk to me, then I will guide you.
00:02Every day, we're being bombarded by scammers.
00:06I've got no money in my bank.
00:08I'm not. I have to pay.
00:11But we are fighting back.
00:13Working with ethical hacker Jim Browning, who hacks into scam call centres,
00:18we can tap into this criminal network
00:20and track down the victims to stop the scammers before they steal.
00:25You should not buy those cards.
00:26You're going to lose your money.
00:28What was that? What was that?
00:29I can assure you that nothing they're saying is true.
00:32You're on the phone to a scammer, my love. You need to hang up the phone.
00:35Hang up!
00:37This is Scam Interceptors.
00:45On today's episode, scammers posing as the police
00:49threaten a young carer with arrest.
00:52So he's got actual appointments to give people drugs
00:55that potentially might, you know, keep them alive.
00:57The scam's not having any of it.
00:59Didn't care.
01:03First of all, you would need to let me know
01:05whatever you have understood from the officer of national crime meetings.
01:09You need to let me know that the police are guys.
01:11Yeah, he said that, like, my national insurance number is compromised.
01:16In the scam hub, the team joined by ethical hacker Jim
01:20are listening in on a truly devious scam in progress.
01:24So let me explain to you one more time what the situation is basically
01:29and let me tell you how to get yourself out from the situation as well.
01:32Under your name and national insurance information,
01:34we have found some fraud that is going on.
01:36There are four bank accounts that Cedars have been found under your name as well.
01:40From those four accounts, thousands of pounds have been transferred outside the UK illegally.
01:45Terrifyingly, the woman is being told by the scammers
01:49who are posing as the National Crime Agency,
01:52the UK's lead law enforcement force for tackling organised crime,
01:57that criminals have used her details to buy properties
02:00and transfer money out of the country.
02:04She is told that the only way she can get out of the situation
02:07is to prove which of the bank accounts actually belong to her.
02:11So let me do tell you one thing here.
02:15This is the first time you're facing such an issue here in the UK.
02:18Is that correct?
02:19Yes, yes.
02:20That's the reason we are taking this case as a theft of identity
02:23and that is the reason we believe and we trust you here.
02:26But in the eyes of the law, right now the court has issued an arrest warrant under your name already.
02:31Do you know what arrest warrant means, miss?
02:34No.
02:36Early in the call, we heard the woman mention a location, Uxbridge.
02:40Given how serious this scam is already, we get the Southern Ground team on the phone to alert them.
02:47Hey, you both.
02:48So we've got our NCA group are working hard today
02:51and they've got someone in their clutches right now.
02:54They've got a lady that's based in this sort of Uxbridge area of London.
02:59OK.
02:59Who they're telling her she's got a warrant out for her arrest
03:03unless she goes and proves that her account is under her control.
03:07But I think she's going to be asked to go to a shop
03:10and if we find that, we might need you to divert and go to the shop and head her off.
03:13OK.
03:14But as soon as we get those details, we'll give them to you.
03:16But this is a scam we know well.
03:18I know you know it very, very well.
03:19We know how quickly these move.
03:21So the quicker you can safely get there, the better, I think,
03:25because this lady is at serious risk of losing some money.
03:29OK, absolutely.
03:30How far is it saying?
03:32So Uxbridge, we're looking about 45 minutes.
03:38Excellent.
03:38So we'll keep you updated and fingers crossed we can head them off.
03:43We know already that these scammers like to use gift cards
03:46as their means of defrauding people.
03:49OK.
03:50Simply, we have to differentiate what is your arrest and what is not.
03:54Like, what is real and what is bogus.
03:57Yes, yeah.
04:00All right.
04:01The way that they justify getting their targets to purchase them
04:05is by claiming that in doing so, the National Crime Agency
04:08can verify that the money indeed belongs to that person
04:12rather than the criminals supposedly stealing their identity.
04:17It is all, of course, lies.
04:21So could you please confirm me what is the available, like, account you're having?
04:26Yes.
04:27And do you have any property there?
04:30No property.
04:32If you're claiming these two accounts belongs to you legally,
04:35then we have to prove these accounts are your legal account
04:37and the money in these two accounts are your legal and hard-earned money, OK?
04:43Can you please check that and let me know?
04:45I have 3,000, just a second, 3,532, whereas it's only 48 accounts.
04:56Simply, you will need to digitally apply your money in the form of gift cards first,
05:00then you have to register those gift cards with the National Crime Agency
05:03through the WhatsApp.
05:04They will send those to the court as evidence.
05:06And that will be the evidence that you're innocent
05:08and that the arrest warrant will be cancelled, OK?
05:10With the ground interceptors out on the road,
05:14we watch and wait for any more clues that might help us intercept the scam.
05:19But what comes next truly shocks all of us in the scam hub.
05:23As I told you, you will need to convert your money first in the form of gift cards.
05:28That means you will need to purchase the gift cards from the nearby remote stores.
05:33Yeah, but the thing is, I'm in Oxbridge.
05:35I'm working as a carer, door-to-door carer.
05:38So, yeah, so I need to be at some particular places
05:42for the taking care of elderly people.
05:44They have their medication time.
05:47It is just awful.
05:49So this lady's saying,
05:51I can't just stop working.
05:53I'm a carer.
05:53I've got elderly people in my care.
05:55I'm giving them medication.
05:57Yeah.
05:57She's got actual appointments to give people drugs
05:59that potentially might, you know, keep them alive.
06:02He didn't care.
06:03And the scammer's not having any of it?
06:04Didn't care.
06:04No.
06:05He's saying this is more important.
06:06I mean, Jim, probably this, I'm afraid to say,
06:08this is something you must have encountered many times,
06:11the scammers just not caring what anyone's up to.
06:13No, they genuinely do not care.
06:15As far as they're concerned,
06:16it doesn't matter whether you're as an important role
06:19as this lady is.
06:21It doesn't matter.
06:22You are just a money bank to them,
06:24and all they will get you to do,
06:26irrespective of any consequences,
06:27is go and get you to get them money.
06:31Awful.
06:31That is actually a disgrace.
06:34So what we have to do, simply,
06:36if you need to make a ringer break from you,
06:39what do you need to do that?
06:40Do you need to call anyone
06:41and make a call to your company like that?
06:44Yes.
06:45Yes, and even I don't have my debit card with me right now.
06:48It's at my home.
06:50I don't carry my debit card every day.
06:52How far is your home right now?
06:54It will take me half hour to go in train as well,
06:57because I'm at Offbridge and I live in Harrow.
07:00The woman explains that she will need to go home to Harrow,
07:04half an hour away,
07:05to be able to get her card
07:07and go on to the shop and buy gift cards.
07:09The scammer demands that she will also need to tell her boss
07:13that she'll be taking a break from work due to illness.
07:17Horrible situation going on here.
07:19We've got a lady who's just said she's a carer,
07:22she's working with elderly people,
07:24she's at work,
07:24and the scammers are actually telling her
07:27that she has got a warrant out for her arrest.
07:30She's going to be arrested
07:31unless she complies with what they're telling her,
07:33which is complete rubbish.
07:35And they're telling her
07:36she needs to now speak to her boss
07:38and say she needs to make these urgent calls and inquiries
07:42and to lie to her boss and say she's actually sick.
07:46We pass the postcode on to the ground team
07:48to at least get them to where we think the woman will be.
07:52So the team have actually heard the scammers
07:54telling her to leave work and go home,
07:58collect her debit card and go to the shop.
08:01Oh, wow.
08:02So we need to reroute to her home address.
08:06So the scammer's moving quite fast then.
08:10She must be really taken in.
08:12She must be petrified.
08:13OK, so that's actually taken five minutes off.
08:16What that means is it gives us a bit more time.
08:19If she's left her workplace to go to her home,
08:21that gives us more time to intercept.
08:24This is going to be close.
08:26With the woman on her way home to get her debit card
08:29and the ground team now on the way to the area too,
08:32we may well be able to stop the scam in person,
08:36but it's a long shot.
08:37I did notice they used Signal
08:39to take little screenshots
08:41of the people that they're trying to scam
08:44and they send it around one another.
08:46So it's quite likely it's somebody else going to take it on.
08:48So you know if you see a screenshot
08:50that's gone on to a sort of chat group,
08:52if you like, between the scammers,
08:53you know that's danger zone
08:54because they're all very interesting.
08:55That's right.
08:56With Jim's help,
08:58we can see the screenshot the scammers share
09:00and it gives us a name.
09:02OK, so Priyanka Martins, NW...
09:05This means we have a much better chance
09:09to track Priyanka down,
09:11but these scammers have a range of tricks up their sleeves.
09:15And that is what these guys have,
09:17that not, as far as I'm aware,
09:18no other group of scammers we've seen have,
09:20which is this cast of characters
09:21that they can bring into play.
09:22They have different people
09:23who they can pass you around and say,
09:25oh, now you're talking to this police person,
09:27now you're talking to the National Crime Agency,
09:28now you're talking to this officer.
09:30It's all like part of a sort of theatre
09:31that they put on for the people
09:33who they're talking to.
09:34So it's quite likely
09:35they're now going to pass her on to someone else,
09:36you know.
09:36And they were actually spoofing
09:38the South Harrow Police Station phone number there.
09:41So again, just to add to being convinced.
09:44So that number that would come through to her phone
09:46would appear to be the one from a police station
09:48when of course we know that that's not going to be it.
09:51And quickly enough,
09:52they have passed Priyanka
09:54on to the next character in their cast.
09:56Now I will give you some details.
09:58Do you have any pen or paper video?
10:01He explains she'll shortly be receiving a call
10:04from a third scammer.
10:06All window dressing designed to make her believe
10:08she's really interacting
10:10with a genuine multi-organisation police investigation.
10:14Hi, this is Officer Michael Tiazza
10:18from PlayStation.
10:19What do we have with PlayStation?
10:21May I have your name, please?
10:24It's Priyanka Martins.
10:26Yeah, give me the case ID number.
10:29Mm-hmm.
10:30Thank you for the verification, Priyanka.
10:32I'm hearing a background noise.
10:34Are you talking with me in front of anyone?
10:36Priyanka Martins is so disturbing.
10:40Because if you're going to talk to someone
10:44regarding this protocol,
10:45that's going to be the breach-up protocol
10:47and we need to cancel the ADR protocol
10:48in that manner, okay?
10:50Then you need to deal with yourself.
10:52So right now,
10:53the first priority is to take care of your identity, okay?
10:56I'm sorry if I don't know what to do.
10:59She sounds so scared, guys.
11:01Yeah, she sounds so terrified.
11:04Luckily, our ground interceptors
11:06are now very close
11:07to what we believe to be Priyanka's home address.
11:11We can only hope that's where she actually is.
11:15We are four minutes away.
11:19Let's hope we can park.
11:20And the scammers are turning up
11:22their intimidation of Priyanka to the max.
11:25This is from National Crime.
11:26Can I come to the station now?
11:28No, no, you don't need to come to the station.
11:29I will make...
11:30Because we need to safeguard your identity.
11:33And for that, there is a protocol.
11:34So in order to make you understand the protocol,
11:36just hold on a moment.
11:39Here we go.
11:39More keys.
11:41Unit 27, Priyanka Morins.
11:43She's connected with me.
11:45I'm just trying to make her understand the protocol.
11:48I will update you accordingly,
11:50whatever she'll find.
11:53Yeah, that's absolutely fine.
11:56Incredibly,
11:57the scammer used pre-recorded audio
11:59of what sounds like police chatter
12:01to help convince the woman
12:03that she is genuinely talking to the police.
12:07All right, Priyanka,
12:09I just want you to just take a break
12:11for a couple of hours.
12:13You can ask your boss or manager
12:14that I'm going out for a moment, okay?
12:17Okay.
12:17And let me know,
12:18do you have the debit cards with you?
12:21Yes.
12:21Despite previously suggesting her cards were at home
12:26and she would need to go there to collect them,
12:29worryingly,
12:29it sounds as if she may still be at the office
12:32and may have at least one card with her.
12:35And that means our ground team
12:37could be in the wrong place.
12:40Okay, they're still going to knock at the door.
12:42The GIs are just pulling up at the dress we have.
12:44It sounds, though,
12:46like this lady is actually at work
12:47and we don't know where her place of work is.
12:50We can only hope
12:52there's someone at the address
12:53who knows Priyanka
12:54who can get a message to her.
12:59All right,
12:59you can take your debit cards with you
13:01and come out of your office
13:03along with your bag
13:05and I will make you understand
13:07what we have to do, okay?
13:09Okay, so it's going to be...
13:13Okay, it's this next left, next left.
13:19Okay, this is the place.
13:22Down there.
13:23Maybe it's one of these.
13:25No, it's going to be one of those.
13:27It's going to be one of those.
13:28And make sure
13:29do not share this information to your boss
13:31that you're talking to the police, okay?
13:34And if they ask you
13:35for what purpose you need to go out,
13:37tell them I have a medical emergency, okay?
13:39It's horrible, isn't it?
13:41Just to tell them just...
13:42The extent to which you're messing with these lies.
13:44Relatantly lie.
13:45You know?
13:46We don't know why,
13:48but the call suddenly drops.
13:51She dropped the call.
13:54God, it's horrible.
13:55It's tense.
13:56Horrific.
13:58In a situation now
14:00where the GIs are at the address we have for her
14:02and the scammers are desperately
14:04trying to get her back on the phone
14:05at the same time,
14:07she's not taking their calls.
14:09Okay, this is the one.
14:25The team are at the only suspected address
14:28we have for Priyanka.
14:30But are relying on someone being there
14:34who can contact her?
14:46My name's Harriet.
14:48I'm from the BBC.
14:48I don't think she's home.
14:57Let's...
14:57Let's FaceTime the hub.
15:00Hey, both.
15:02Interestingly...
15:02Hey, Steve.
15:03Yeah, what can you see?
15:04What's going on?
15:05So, we've just knocked on the property.
15:09There's no answer,
15:10but I thought that I could hear somebody inside.
15:12I've shouted through the letterbox
15:14and said who I was
15:15and that was from the BBC.
15:18But nobody's answering the door.
15:20The call went down.
15:21She hung up the call
15:22and she hasn't been taking any further calls
15:24from these guys
15:25despite them repeatedly trying to get through to her.
15:29So, I think it probably is worth
15:31just sort of being a presence around there
15:34just in case to let her know
15:35she's not in any trouble.
15:36There is no police involvement.
15:38There is certainly no warrant
15:39for illegal use of her bank accounts
15:42or whatever rubbish
15:42these scammers are telling her.
15:45So, if you don't mind
15:46just waiting there a little longer
15:48just in case she is inside the address
15:50because she might be.
15:52Absolutely, yeah.
15:53Thank you both.
15:54We'll keep you posted.
15:58Harriet tries again
16:00to get the message through to Priyanka.
16:02My name's Harriet.
16:04I'm from the BBC.
16:06I work for a programme called Scam Interceptors.
16:09If you want to come to the door
16:11I can explain everything.
16:12Suddenly...
16:13Hi, is it Priyanka?
16:14No, Priyanka's not here.
16:16Oh, she...
16:17Where is she?
16:18So, she doesn't...
16:19She lives on...
16:20Oh, OK.
16:22Do you know her?
16:24She's a friend of mine.
16:26The resident confirms
16:27that the lady's name
16:28is in fact Reyanka
16:30and while she doesn't stay
16:31at this address
16:32she does know the people
16:34who live there.
16:36I can tell her.
16:37Yeah, if you could just...
16:38Could you...
16:39So, I'm from the BBC.
16:40We work for a programme
16:41called Scam Interceptors.
16:42OK.
16:43And she's currently on the phone
16:44to somebody that she...
16:46They're telling her
16:47that they're from the police.
16:48OK.
16:48So, she thinks they're
16:49from the police
16:50and they're trying to get her
16:51to buy gift cards
16:52and transfer money to them.
16:54So, if you could just
16:55get the message through
16:55to tell her that she must stop.
16:57OK, fine.
16:58I'm going to call her right now.
17:00Oh, that's great.
17:01You know her.
17:02I'm sorry to that.
17:03As Reyanka's friend
17:05tries to reach her
17:06we wait.
17:10Then the phone rings.
17:11Oh, she's calling.
17:13OK.
17:13OK.
17:15Do you want to put her on speaker?
17:16Yeah.
17:17Hello, Reyanka.
17:20But did you ask me
17:21for my last four visits
17:22of my N.I. number?
17:23Oh, N.I. number.
17:25Reyanka?
17:27Hello.
17:28Hi.
17:28My name's Harriet.
17:30I work for a programme
17:31called The Scam Interceptors
17:33for the BBC.
17:33I believe that our team
17:36have been trying
17:37to contact you
17:38to tell you
17:38that you were
17:39on the phone
17:40to a scammer.
17:42Reyanka thankfully
17:43managed to get out
17:44of the scam.
17:45Harriet is now able
17:47to alleviate
17:47her concerns.
17:50Look at this.
17:50So dumb.
17:51And I'm so dumb.
17:52You're not dumb.
17:54Don't be silly.
17:55These people
17:55are so clever.
17:57And they really draw you in
17:58because were they telling you
17:59that they were from the police?
18:01Yeah.
18:01And they gave me
18:02some case ID
18:02and they were
18:03roti talikar.
18:05Oh, my God.
18:06Honestly,
18:07you've done so well
18:08to hang up there.
18:10Oh, my God.
18:12I'm glad that you can laugh
18:15about it
18:16because, honestly,
18:17that's...
18:17Yeah, you've done so well
18:19to...
18:19As long as my cash
18:20doesn't go out,
18:21I would laugh.
18:23OK, well,
18:24your friend here
18:25has done a really good job
18:26by contacting you
18:28and, yeah,
18:29I think she wondered
18:30what was happening
18:30when we came knocking
18:32on the door.
18:33Thank you so much.
18:38I'll pass you back over.
18:43That was an amazing result there.
18:45So even though
18:46Rianca didn't live there,
18:47her friend did,
18:48and we were actually able
18:49to speak to her on the phone.
18:50She said she felt really silly,
18:52but she was just really glad
18:53that she's not lost any money.
18:54So it's a good result all around.
18:56Glad we got here.
18:57Now that we know
18:59that Rianca's money is safe,
19:02the ground team called
19:03to settle nerves in the hub
19:04and let us know the good news.
19:07Hey, both,
19:07how'd you get on at the address?
19:10So that was quite
19:11an incredible result there.
19:13So initially,
19:14we thought there was nobody home,
19:15there was no answer,
19:17and then eventually
19:18a girl came to the door
19:19and it was actually...
19:21Rianca didn't live there,
19:23but her friend knew her
19:25that did live there,
19:27so she must have at some point
19:29used that address for some post,
19:31and she was able to get through to her.
19:34Wow, absolutely fantastic.
19:35Brilliant work.
19:36And then we were able
19:37to speak to Rianca on the phone
19:39and kind of talk her through
19:40what's happened,
19:40and, you know,
19:42as with many of these cases,
19:43she felt quite foolish,
19:45but I reassured her
19:46that there was absolutely
19:46no need to take it
19:48in any way personally,
19:49and just how clever
19:50these scammers really are.
19:52Well, you did brilliantly.
19:53Thank you both,
19:54and well done.
19:55Cheers, team.
19:57Bye.
19:57If you think you've been scammed,
20:01then there are some steps
20:03you need to take straight away.
20:06Firstly, call your bank.
20:08The number is usually
20:08on the back of your bank card.
20:11Then remove any software
20:13that scammers have asked you
20:14to install on your phone or laptop.
20:17If you're not sure how to do this,
20:19then ask a friend or family member.
20:21Change your passwords
20:22on as many online accounts as you can
20:24and keep a close eye on them
20:26over the coming days
20:27to see if there's
20:28any unusual activity.
20:30Tell your friends and family
20:32if they receive
20:33any online approaches
20:34purporting to be you,
20:36they could be fake.
20:37Report the crime to action fraud.
20:39Go to actionfraud.police.uk
20:41or call 0300 123 2040.
20:45If you're in Scotland,
20:46report the crime to the police
20:48on 101.
20:50And if you've had a scam text,
20:52forward that to 7726.
20:54that spells spam
20:55on your phone's keypad.
20:57The more that you report,
20:59the more that can be done
21:01to stop them.
21:05In the hub,
21:06it's another intense day
21:07for the team
21:08as they monitor
21:09the National Crime Agency
21:11impersonating scammers.
21:13So up there in the call centres,
21:15we've actually got a repeat call.
21:17It's a number that we monitored earlier
21:18and he's back on.
21:19Oh, which one's that?
21:21The 599,
21:22the one that you pointed out to me.
21:24559?
21:25Oh, this guy.
21:26NCA 599.
21:27That's the one at the bottom there.
21:29Okay.
21:29Interceptor Alice
21:31has noticed
21:31a number we have seen
21:33earlier in the day
21:34which has reappeared
21:35on the scammer's server.
21:37Someone they were
21:38previously on the phone to
21:40and we thought
21:41had got out of the scam
21:42is back
21:43and it doesn't sound good.
21:45I'm saying to me,
21:46if you don't wish to cooperate,
21:48there will be
21:48an arrest warrant
21:50that has been issued under your name.
21:51We have to go for the arrest warrant then.
21:53Would that be okay for you?
21:54I am not confused.
21:56The scammer is trying
21:57to force the man
21:58to cooperate
21:59by threatening him
22:00with imminent arrest
22:01if he doesn't comply.
22:03Listen to me.
22:04The court has to keep
22:05the registration of the cards first.
22:07Then we can only help you out.
22:10Otherwise,
22:10the protocol is cancelled.
22:12That means
22:12the court you bought
22:14all the amounts
22:15will be in vain.
22:16Oh, guys,
22:17he's bought cards.
22:18He's trying to get him
22:19to read the codes out.
22:20That'll be why he's back on then.
22:21I'm calling him now.
22:23The police will come to meet you.
22:25The National Crime Agency
22:26will be there.
22:27It sounds as if the man
22:29has already purchased gift cards,
22:31believing that this would prove
22:33to the scammers
22:33that his money was his own
22:35and not involved in criminality.
22:38But right at the moment
22:39where he's about to reveal
22:40the gift card codes
22:42to the scammers
22:43and in doing so
22:44lose his money,
22:45he's having doubts.
22:47We need to help
22:48confirm his suspicions.
22:51Okay, here we go.
22:52I'm going to text.
22:52The court has to see
22:56the transactions.
22:57They have to verify.
22:58I am receiving text.
23:00Someone's like...
23:02Scammer, do it again.
23:03Do it again.
23:03Just read it.
23:04Hand up.
23:04Immediately.
23:05Scammer, hang up.
23:06That's your text.
23:07Can you send a screenshot
23:08of that message?
23:09Oh, you want a screenshot.
23:10You're misleading
23:10the officers here.
23:12I'm going to reply to him.
23:13What are you going to say?
23:15Do not screenshot.
23:16Do not screenshot.
23:17The National Crime Agency
23:18scammers
23:19are incredibly suspicious,
23:21and the last thing we want
23:22is for them to realise
23:24that we're listening
23:25in to their calls.
23:26Nick sent warning text
23:28to the target.
23:28The target has read them
23:30out to the scammer.
23:30The scammer's saying,
23:31take a screenshot
23:32and send us that message.
23:34If we do that,
23:35they know we're onto them
23:37and we can lose our access.
23:38That means we can't
23:39help anyone else.
23:40The audio of the call
23:42is very garbled,
23:43making our job
23:44much more difficult
23:45in picking up details
23:47about the man at risk.
23:48But we persist
23:49in sending warning texts.
23:52Alice, is that any easier
23:53for you to hear?
23:54No.
23:55Unfortunately not.
23:57What are you writing here?
23:58You're not speaking
23:58to the police.
24:00You are not speaking
24:02to the police.
24:04You are...
24:05You are not a police man.
24:09You are pressurising me.
24:10You will face any circumstances.
24:12I don't worry.
24:13I will say it
24:14by in person.
24:16It sounds
24:19from what we're able
24:19to make out
24:20as if the man
24:21has lost patience
24:22and hung up.
24:24So Nick takes his chance
24:25to call him immediately.
24:27With the gift cards
24:29actually in his hands,
24:31it's now or never.
24:35Hi.
24:36My name's Nick Stapleton.
24:38I work on a television programme
24:40called Scam Interceptors
24:41for the BBC.
24:42That guy that you were
24:44just talking to,
24:45he's nothing to do
24:46with the police.
24:48OK?
24:48Yeah.
24:49He's lying to you.
24:50He was pressurising me.
24:52He ruined my day.
24:54I am totally depressed
24:55right now.
24:56OK, so I promise you
24:58everything he said to you
25:00is not true.
25:01He was lying to you.
25:03Crime agency.
25:04Yeah.
25:05He made fake documents.
25:06It's not true.
25:08OK?
25:09Everything he said to you
25:10was lies.
25:12And what's your name,
25:13by the way?
25:13My name's Nick.
25:14Hello.
25:15My name is Asim.
25:17Asim Muzakar.
25:18Hi, Asim.
25:19If you have bought
25:20any gift cards,
25:22Yeah.
25:23did you buy
25:23some gift cards today?
25:25Yeah, I buy it,
25:26but they are asking me
25:27to pull pictures
25:27and I declined.
25:29Yeah.
25:29Because this is something
25:30to see, I know.
25:31Yeah, do not do it
25:32because they will steal
25:33your money
25:33if you give them
25:34those pictures,
25:35if you give them the codes.
25:40Well, well done you
25:41for knowing
25:42that that was a scam, OK?
25:43How many gift cards
25:45did you buy?
25:45How much money?
25:48And was it £100,
25:50£200?
25:54OK.
25:56So I think, Asim,
25:57that you should try
25:58and return those gift cards.
26:00If you've still got
26:00the receipts for them,
26:02you should go back
26:02to the shop
26:03where you bought them
26:04and try to return them
26:06so you can get
26:06your money back, OK?
26:08Is they going to
26:09return these cards?
26:12That's, I think,
26:13what you need to do
26:14is to try to give them
26:15back to the shop, OK?
26:17OK.
26:18Because you're not
26:19in any trouble.
26:20It's total lies, OK?
26:22Everything that they've
26:23told you today
26:23is just complete nonsense.
26:26So I...
26:26That's OK.
26:30That's OK.
26:31No problem at all, OK?
26:32It's what we do.
26:34So you do that first
26:35and we'll give you
26:35a ring back a bit later, OK?
26:37And we'll see how it's gone
26:38and we'll talk a bit more.
26:39Is that all right?
26:41We'll give you a ring
26:41a bit later.
26:42Thank you very much, Nick.
26:44No problem.
26:44See you.
26:45Bye-bye.
26:46Bye.
26:46£250, £250, £200, £200.
26:54Yeah, £700 worth of gift cards.
26:56£700 worth of gift cards
26:58that that man was about
26:59to give to that lot
27:01before he read those texts out.
27:03Yeah, and I think
27:04it sounded like he was wavering
27:06and they were putting him
27:07under such pressure.
27:08I felt our texts arrived
27:10at exactly the right moment
27:11just to pull him back onto...
27:13Hang on a minute,
27:14there's something not right here.
27:14The main thing is,
27:16that was a brilliant intercept
27:17and his money's now safe
27:19as a result of it.
27:20Nick, save my day, man.
27:21Yes, we got there.
27:24It's a great ending
27:26after an extremely close shave.
27:29In even better news,
27:30we were able to confirm
27:32with a sim
27:32that the money from his gift cards
27:34was back where it belongs,
27:36in his account.
27:39Some days later,
27:40we confronted
27:41the National Crime Agency
27:43impersonating scammers.
27:44They denied all wrongdoing
27:46and never responded
27:47to a letter of allegations
27:48we sent them.
27:50We reported our evidence
27:51on the group
27:52to the authorities,
27:53both in the UK
27:54and in India.
27:56We also asked
27:57the genuine
27:58National Crime Agency
27:59about scammers

28:02and it told us
28:03it would never

28:05requesting money,
28:07gift cards
28:07or bank details.
28:09Amor,
