00:00If you talk to me, then I will guide you.
00:02Every day, we're being bombarded by scammers.
00:06I've got no money in my bank.
00:08I'm not. I have to pay.
00:11But we are fighting back.
00:13Working with ethical hacker Jim Browning,
00:15who hacks into scam call centres,
00:18we can tap into this criminal network
00:20and track down the victims to stop the scammers
00:24before they steal.
00:25You should not buy those cards.
00:26You're going to lose your money.
00:28What was that? What was that?
00:29I can assure you that nothing they're saying is true.
00:32You're on the phone to a scammer, my love.
00:34You need to hang up the phone.
00:37This is Scam Interceptors.
00:44On today's episode...
00:46We'll stay on them until they start doing this.
00:47We will disrupt this lot as much as we possibly can.
00:50We confront the prolific scammers
00:53claiming to be from the National Crime Agency.
00:56You're a thief. You're a scammer.
00:57You are the prime suspect in this case.
01:03Your national insurance number has been compromised.
01:06The team in the Glasgow Scam Hub
01:08have been monitoring a group of scammers
01:10who are calling British mobile numbers
01:13claiming to be the National Crime Agency,
01:15the UK's leading law enforcement agency
01:18fighting organised crime.
01:20Unit 1, this is Michael Chiazzo from PlayStation.
01:23They're some of the cruelest scammers that we've ever encountered.
01:27I'm making sure that you are going to be arrested.
01:30We've been investigating them for several weeks
01:33and it sounds like they've got their claws into another potential victim.
01:37This call's been going on for 28 minutes
01:40and it is our call centre who are posing as the National Crime Agency,
01:43threatening people that their national insurance numbers have been compromised,
01:47used for criminal activity.
01:48To prove that they're not the criminals,
01:50to prove that their money is their own,
01:52what the scammers ask them to do
01:53is to go out and buy gift cards
01:55which they say are then going to be given over to officers of the law.
01:57And it sounds like the person on the line
02:02might be out and about somewhere,
02:03possibly even buying gift cards
02:04and they've just left the phone in their pocket
02:06with the line open to the scammer.
02:08We only have limited information on the man being targeted,
02:11just a postcode in the south of England.
02:14And with technical challenges too,
02:16it's a struggle to work out exactly what's going on.
02:20I just can't get both sides of the call to work,
02:23but I'm getting the speakers right now, but not the mic.
02:27What we have is screen.
02:29Yeah, this is a screen.
02:31Which means we have a postcode.
02:33Yeah, this sounds to me like someone who's out and about
02:35and that's the phone in their pocket.
02:36It definitely sounds like that.
02:37So do you think they're already on the way to get the gift cards maybe?
02:40Quite likely.
02:44So I think what we'll do is we'll send our southern GIs
02:47in that general direction
02:48and we'll start trying to get in touch with this person now.
02:50While Nick starts trying to reach the man by phone,
02:53producer Mark dispatches the ground interceptor team,
02:56Mia and Harriet.
02:57to the postcode we have.
03:00Plumstead, Woolwich, south of the river.
03:03The GIs in about 48 minutes, they said, away.
03:0848 minutes?
03:0948, yeah.
03:11North circular, lots of traffic.
03:12A long way.
03:1450 minutes across London is a long way.
03:17With little more than the rustling sounds of a phone in someone's pocket to go on,
03:23it's hard to be sure what's happening until the audio suddenly kicks in.
03:28Oh, that sounds like your phone being picked up.
03:35Just do with just like a snippet of conversation.
03:38Just a smudge, right?
03:41Hello?
03:42Here we go.
03:44Hello?
03:44I am continuously calling for your name.
03:47You're not responding.
03:48What is going on there?
03:50Yeah, I guess I was just purchasing for the cards.
03:53I'm offering them.
03:54How much you paid for the cards?
03:56700?
03:57Oh, no.
03:59Call it now.
04:00This is our worst case scenario.
04:02The man has £700 worth of gift cards in his hands.
04:06If he reads out the codes on the back to the scammers,
04:09his money will be gone with no chance of tracing it.
04:13And with the ground team so far away,
04:16it leaves Nick and the hub little choice but to try and contact the man immediately.
04:21Okay, now come out from the store.
04:23Yeah.
04:27All right, now first we need to register those cards, okay?
04:31Registering the cards means handing the scammers the codes.
04:36Oh, no.
04:38So, what you have to do,
04:41you need to take the cards out from the packet first.
04:43No, don't do that.
04:45But with the man on the phone to the scammer,
04:48he isn't answering our calls or reading our warning messages.
04:55Oh, God, we need to...
04:56Do we just do a bombard?
04:58No, no, no.
04:59This is the last step.
05:01Then you can go back to the home.
05:02Oh, no.
05:03And we will start working on your case file, okay?
05:06You need to give these three cards to us
05:08so that we can transfer back a £700 on your account.
05:13We have to send these cards to the courthouse
05:15to validate these cards, okay?
05:17This is your hard-earned money.
05:20Huge moment here,
05:21because this guy's clearly bought £700 worth of gift cards.
05:23Now, all the scammer needs
05:24is for him to read the voucher codes off the cards
05:27or send pictures of them.
05:28That's it.
05:28Done.
05:29Money gone.
05:29On the front side of the card,
05:31there is a scratch panel.
05:32You need to scratch it, okay?
05:34Yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:35Yeah, so I...
05:36And once you scratch it,
05:39then you need to take a photograph
05:40and send it to the NCA on WhatsApp.
05:43Oh, no.
05:43Can't get it.
05:44We pass on the latest updates about the scam
05:46to the ground team,
05:48still over 40 minutes away.
05:50North circular, lots of traffic.
05:54So he's really deep into the scam here.
05:56We just need to get there as quickly as possible.
05:58In the hub,
06:00none of our efforts to get through to the man
06:03seem to be working.
06:05So, as he edges ever closer to losing his money,
06:09Nick tries something new.
06:12He's not responding.
06:13Trying to WhatsApp call.
06:14Yeah, so just take the card out
06:15and scratch the panel.
06:17Yeah.
06:21Have you scratched it?
06:25Don't do it.
06:26Don't scratch it.
06:26He sounds like he's scratching.
06:30It does.
06:31Oh, mate.
06:36Oh, my God.
06:38Have you take all the three cards out?
06:41Hello?
06:42Sorry?
06:42Yeah, okay, I'll call you back.
06:43Yes?
06:44Yes!
06:46Suddenly, it sounds as if the man
06:48might be having doubts,
06:49and he ends the call.
06:51Hello?
06:52Come on.
06:56Hello?
06:56Come on, mate.
06:59Answer the phone.
07:00We're now in a battle with the scammers
07:02to get him on the phone.
07:04Come on, mate.
07:11But it sounds like the scammers
07:12have got him back on the line.
07:14Hello?
07:15Why are you disconnecting the car?
07:17He's read your messages.
07:18He's read my messages.
07:19I'll call you back.
07:20Yes!
07:20Come on.
07:21Yes!
07:21I'm going to call him, call him, call him.
07:23Yeah.
07:23I'm on it.
07:24I'm on it.
07:24I'm on it.
07:24I'm on it.
07:24I'm on it.
07:24I'm on it.
07:33Like an amount of time,
07:35your call has been forwarded to an...
07:37Despite our efforts,
07:38it's still a struggle to get through to him.
07:41Oh, he must be so confused.
07:43Oh, bless his soul.
07:43They were so close to money.
07:49They're going to be furious.
07:52Yeah, they're not going to give up.
07:55We know the man is now off the phone to the scammer,
07:59but we can't get him to take our calls either.
08:01Just as we're planning our next steps.
08:06He read your messages.
08:07He has.
08:09Definite blue ticks.
08:10I would just say, um, call us, we'll explain, or something like that.
08:14He's calling.
08:15He's calling.
08:15He's calling.
08:16Okay.
08:19Hello, sir.
08:20Hello.
08:21Hi there.
08:21Yeah, yeah, yeah.
08:22I thank you for your warning.
08:23That's okay.
08:24I'm from a national agency,
08:28and they made me purchase out 700.
08:29I know.
08:30I get that money back now.
08:31Okay, so my name's Nick Stapleton.
08:34I'm a journalist.
08:35I work for the BBC on a program called Scam Interceptors.
08:39Yeah?
08:39Yeah, yes, I know, I know.
08:40I watch you all the time.
08:41Oh, brilliant.
08:42Okay.
08:43So what you need to do,
08:45you need to tell your bank that you've been scammed.
08:48Now, the gift cards that you bought,
08:50were they Apple gift cards?
08:51Do you know?
08:53Yeah, Apple for it.
08:54Apple gift cards for everything.
08:55Okay.
08:55Three of them.
08:56He scratched and revealed the codes on the cards,
08:59but crucially, he hasn't read them out to the scammer,
09:03meaning his money is still on the gift cards.
09:07Do you mind if I ask your name, by the way?
09:09Patrick.
09:10Patrick, hey, Patrick.
09:10I'm Nick.
09:11So, Patrick, I think the best thing to do, first of all,
09:14is probably to go to a police station
09:17or call the police on the non-emergency number
09:19and tell them that this has happened
09:22and ask for a crime reference number.
09:23Yeah.
09:26Because you're going to need the crime reference number
09:28to get Apple to give you the money back.
09:30That £700 is currently on those gift cards.
09:33So...
09:33You need that money for something.
09:34Well, all right.
09:35Okay, so let me go to the police.
09:36Let me go to the police now.
09:37I've got two colleagues who are called Harriet and Mia
09:40who can come and help you with this if you want.
09:42They're BBC journalists.
09:43They've got ID.
09:44I can get them over to you once you're done with the police.
09:47Yeah, Plumstead police station.
09:49I don't know if it's awkward.
09:50That's the nearest one to me.
09:51Plumstead.
09:51Okay.
09:52You head there, all right?
09:54All right.
09:54Thanks a lot for your help.
09:55No problem, Patrick.
09:56I'm really glad that we were able to get you when we did
09:57because that was close.
09:59Yeah.
09:59Thank you very much.
10:00Finally, Patrick is out of the scammer's clutches.
10:05Oh, my goodness.
10:07Wow.
10:08That was as close as it's been, I think.
10:10Wow, wow, wow.
10:11Okay.
10:11I mean, they must be so confused right now.
10:15Nick gets Harriet and Mia on the phone to tell them the good news
10:19and let them know the plan with the gift cards,
10:21which still contain Patrick's money.
10:26So, we've got a bit of a situation that we're going to need your help with.
10:30Okay.
10:30A man called Patrick, who I've just spoken to on the phone.
10:34Yeah.
10:34Unfortunately, we just managed to intercept right at the point
10:38where he bought gift cards for the National Crime Agency scam.
10:43Right.
10:43Wow, okay.
10:44He is holding 700 quid's worth of gift cards right now.
10:47We literally heard him scratching the back of the gift cards
10:51to read the codes out to the scammers when we managed to get through to him.
10:54No.
10:55So, what I've done is I've told him to go to his local police station.
10:59Okay.
10:59So, what it would be great if you guys can do, if you don't mind,
11:03is to basically say to him that you guys are giving him a hand
11:05trying to get his money back after he comes out.
11:07Okay.
11:07Yeah, for sure.
11:08Yeah, sounds good.
11:09And hopefully we can get him his 700 quid back,
11:11because he said he needs the money.
11:11Absolutely.
11:12Absolutely.
11:13We'll get him as much help as we can.
11:14A short while later, the team have almost reached Patrick.
11:19Right.
11:19We're on the high street.
11:20The police station must be around here somewhere.
11:22It's Patrick.
11:30Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's you.
11:31Hi.
11:34Harriet meets Patrick at the station,
11:36where he gets a crime reference number from the police,
11:39which he'll need to get his money back off the gift cards.
11:43We then catch up with him shortly afterwards,
11:45back in the ground team's car.
11:48This is Patrick.
11:50Patrick, how are you?
11:51Yeah, how are you?
11:52How are you?
11:53How are you doing?
11:53I'm good.
11:54Have you managed to speak to Apple?
11:56Yeah, we've spoken to Apple.
11:57Harriet and Mia.
11:58Mia, they've been a great help.
12:00We sent one information today.
12:02It's been quite a stressful morning to Patrick.
12:04It's been quite a stressful morning to Patrick.
12:04Yeah.
12:05I'm not surprised.
12:06I didn't know this kind of messed up, to tell the truth.
12:08I got a phone call.
12:09The guy is so old policeman, Mr. Michael.
12:13He said that he's from the Troncet Police Station.
12:15Yeah.
12:16So at that moment when we spoke,
12:18were you actually scratching the gift cards in that moment?
12:21I was scratching the gift cards.
12:23He was probably on the phone.
12:26So when he finally got the money,
12:27he said when he got outside, just crack them.
12:29That's when people jumped in.
12:31Whoa, that was close.
12:32That was close.
12:34Very, very close.
12:36Well, look, I'm so glad we managed to speak to you when we did,
12:39and I'm so glad that we managed to get these guys out there to help.
12:42Yeah.
12:43Perfect.
12:45We've got all the gift cards here.
12:47Wow.
12:48So you've got to go with these numbers,
12:50and Patrick's hopefully going to get a refund.
12:52Brilliant.
12:53All right, what a fantastic result.
12:54I'm so happy we were able to help, Patrick.
12:56I appreciate your coming in at the right time.
13:00Oh, it's our pleasure.
13:00It's what we do.
13:01Cheers, team.
13:02Ciao, later.
13:03Bye.
13:04It's a fantastic ending to a very stressful situation.
13:09And sure enough, a few weeks later,
13:11Patrick's money was back where it belongs in his bank account.
13:16If you are being pressured into buying a gift card for someone else,
13:20just stop and take a moment.
13:22Neither the bank, the police, nor any legitimate company
13:25will ever ask you to make a payment via a gift card.
13:28If you have purchased any cards, never share the numbers on the back
13:32or send photos of the cards to anyone.
13:35If you think you have been the victim of a gift card scam,
13:39call your bank immediately.
13:41Contact the gift card company directly to see if they can stop the transaction.
13:46Report to Action Fraud, the UK's central point for reporting fraud to the police.
13:50If you're in Scotland, report directly to the police on 101.
13:54With help from our ethical hacker Jim Browning,
14:06we continue to monitor the same scammers who targeted Patrick,
14:10pretending to be the UK's national crime agency,
14:14under the alias of officer Michael Tiazzo.
14:16They have issued an arrest to water under your name to our police station.
14:21A few weeks later, we've had a breakthrough.
14:24So Jim has just been pulling files from their computers while we've been sat here.
14:29And that includes full government-level identification
14:32for one of the main scammers that we've been talking to, Ketan.
14:37So we can see what he looks like. He's a young guy.
14:39He's so young.
14:42This is Ketan Chattavedi.
14:44Ketan is one of the many faces behind one of the cruelest scams we've ever encountered,
14:51threatening people with arrest unless they comply with his requests.
14:56Jim and I rejoin the team in the hub as our investigation ramps up.
15:00Well, Nick, hearing how this group, in particular,
15:03the scammer we're listening to is operating,
15:06I don't know about you, I genuinely think we have got to do everything we can to take them down now.
15:11Jim, I know that you've been working away in the background there,
15:13trying to identify exactly where that scammer is based.
15:18And you think you might have found a location?
15:20Yes, thanks to his wireless networks, I can pinpoint him to within about 15 metres.
15:25So I've just sent you his location,
15:28and it looks like he's in the very north-west of India.
15:32They're located here, in the Indian-administered city of Srinagar,
15:37on the banks of the Doudgunga River.
15:41First thing that springs to my mind is that's clearly just residential, isn't it?
15:46That's probably his house.
15:47So this is brilliant, Jim.
15:49Thank you so much for this.
15:51And the scammer's location isn't the only trick up our sleeve.
15:54We've got our microphone,
15:56which will mean that we can actually join the calls that he's on.
16:00So what we'll do is, when he's on a call,
16:03and the moment I tell you that mic goes live,
16:05you'll be able to talk to him and the target he's talking to at the same time.
16:09Do you know what? I think we've got to go really hard here.
16:11We've got to do everything we can.
16:12We've got to flex some serious cyber muscle against this lot.
16:14We continue to monitor Catan's calls.
16:19Has it helped me with the last four digits of your national insurance number?
16:23We've heard enough.
16:24Time to put our allegations to him.
16:27It's because there is an investigation going under your name
16:29and your national insurance number.
16:31Is that Catan?
16:34Sorry?
16:35Is that Catan?
16:39Is that Catan?
16:43Who is this?
16:45This is Ralph Wilding from the Scam Interceptors programme made by the BBC.
16:50You're a scammer.
16:51Why are you trying to scam people pretending you're from the NCA?
16:55The victim hangs up the call, but Catan is still listening.
16:59I'm sorry?
17:00Why are you scamming people?
17:05Why have you suddenly gone quiet?
17:07You've got plenty to say when you're trying to steal people's money.
17:10What are you up to at the moment?
17:11You're sat in Srinagar, aren't you?
17:13Are you looking outside your window?
17:17Can you see the river?
17:19How's the view?
17:20We know where you are.
17:22Why have you gone so quiet?
17:28His silence is telling.
17:31Don't worry, we'll be sending all our findings about your illegal operation to the police.
17:35How would you feel, Catan, if this was a member of your family getting scammed in this way?
17:45Left in floods of tears because of what you do to them.
17:48I'm sure you wouldn't like it.
17:53Catan has gotten a fright and turns off his computer.
17:58OK, he's gone.
18:00He's gone.
18:01Unfortunately, for someone who makes an illegal living out of being such a good talker,
18:07had nothing to say to me.
18:09He switched his computer off pretty quickly.
18:11But it's not over, is it, Nick?
18:13We want to make sure we put a stop to this entire operation.
18:18And there are still other computers from this call center on the network.
18:22Thanks to Jim's access, we now know the names of other scammers in the room.
18:28Now I want to speak to them.
18:30Is that Sohil or is that Akash?
18:38Maybe it's AJ.
18:41Who is it?
18:42Sohil?
18:43Akash?
18:44AJ?
18:48Hello.
18:49Who's that?
18:51Is that Sohil?
18:53Akash?
18:53Who are you?
18:54Is that Sohil?
18:57He cuts the call.
19:00They are very spooked.
19:04But we're not giving up.
19:07The scammers clearly don't want to talk.
19:09But we've got another ace up our sleeve.
19:12Interceptor Harleen puts our allegations to Catan in Hindi.
19:18Catan?
19:21Catan?
19:23You're a scammer, right?
19:24We know that you're scammers.
19:26Catan.
19:37Catan?
19:41Catan?
19:41Catan?
19:41Are you too scared, Catan?
19:42The scammers don't say a word.
19:45Now that they are aware of our presence,
19:47Nick can use the full extent of our access
19:50and writes a message on their computer screens.
19:53And Nick, read out what you've just put on their computer.
19:56This is BBC Scam Interceptors.
19:58We know who you are and we know where you are.
20:00Our information will be going to the police in Jambo and Kashmir.
20:02Tell your boss to call us and I've left our number for them.
20:05Brilliant work.
20:06Somebody tells me they won't ring.
20:09And looking at that screen right now, Nick,
20:11how many scam calls are they making?
20:14Some of our most evil, persistent, horrible scammers
20:17we've had on the show and right now they're doing nothing.
20:20Nothing at all. Brilliant.
20:21A good result, team. Really good result.
20:26But remarkably, seemingly undeterred,
20:29the next day, while Nick is in the hub,
20:32the scammers are back online.
20:34Just yesterday, we confronted our NCA scammers,
20:38some of the most grim, evil, manipulative scammers
20:42that we've ever had on the show.
20:46They're back online.
20:47It's like they thought what happened
20:49was just some kind of glitch in the matrix.
20:52I think we need to put them on the straight and narrow,
20:54so I'm going to try and have some more conversations with them.
20:58Nick writes them another message,
21:00this time in their private group chat.
21:03How many bank accounts are you using in UK?
21:05This is BBC Scam Interceptors.
21:07Uh-huh.
21:09This is BBC.
21:10We know who you all are.
21:18We will be reporting you to the police.
21:21He seems to have gone quiet on his little scam.
21:27He's just shoving you down straight away.
21:29I did it. Come on.
21:30We've got it on their group.
21:31OK.
21:32Every single one of them knows, no hesitation,
21:34finger on the power button,
21:35but I got the messages into their chat first.
21:38He is going to be scared right now,
21:39and his friends are going to be scared as well.
21:41Ketan and his colleagues are clearly on edge
21:44and try to remove us from their servers,
21:46but they're unsuccessful,
21:48meaning we can still see them trying
21:50to scam vulnerable people in the UK.
21:53They think they've gotten away with it,
21:55but we're not letting that happen.
21:58Now, we've already called them out.
21:59Yep.
22:00And I thought it was very successful
22:02when we called them out
22:03because we saw the computers shut down.
22:05However, you have just discovered
22:07they're very much online.
22:09Yep.
22:10They have not realized
22:11that we have access to their call server.
22:13So thanks to Jim,
22:15and his technical know-how,
22:16we have got a deeper level of access
22:18that they believe that we have.
22:20But I am personally offended
22:22that they are still going on,
22:24as I'm sure you are.
22:25It annoys me.
22:26I never want to hear Michael Tiazzo's name ever again.
22:28So I think we need to go even harder today,
22:31and I think we should really put the wind up them
22:33and scare them into shutting this operation down for good.
22:37I decide to speak to Ketan again,
22:40and this time...
22:42Ketan?
22:43Who is with you?
22:44This is Rav Wilding.
22:45The program's called Scam Interceptors,
22:46and we've been monitoring you for months.
22:47You're a scammer, Ketan.

23:13He's not from the National Crime Agency.

23:22Hang up the phone.
23:23You're not in any trouble.
23:24Ketan, you are though.
23:25He hung up.
23:26He hung up.
23:27He hung up.
23:28He hung up.
23:29I'm not in any trouble.
23:30We will crash into another call.
23:31Now, can you confirm me your real postcode?
23:33We can differentiate between what is real and what is bogus.
23:35Don't give your postcode.
23:36You're talking to a thief.
23:37He's not from the National Crime Agency.
23:39OK.

23:42OK, next one.
23:43And another.
23:45How many bank accounts are you using?
23:47Hello, don't tell them how many bank accounts you're using
23:50because it's a scammer.

25:19you know people can and do go to prison for this don't you yeah we know where you are
25:25we've been monitoring you for a long time why don't you tell us your real name
25:30i told you that's none of your business it's totally my business it's what we do we stop
25:38people getting scammed by people like you what's the view of the river like out of your window
25:42why don't you come here in person so they can make it oh i would love to i would love to there's
25:52quite a few things i'd like to say to you but why why do you do this how would you like it if your
25:57family was scammed the scammer hangs up and after this they change their passwords in an attempt to
26:06stop us disrupting their operation further but they don't realize that we won't stop until they
26:14shut down for good they're still going i don't think they understand how we're listening to their
26:21calls and so they've not done anything to either change their settings or try and kick us out apart
26:28from change one password i mean they're persistent but we are going to be even more consistent we'll
26:32stay on them until they stop doing we will disrupt this lot as much as we possibly can because they
26:37are ruthless and they are taking thousands and thousands of innocent people's money yep so we've
26:43got to put a stop to it quite right we dial in again this man's a liar he's nothing to do with
26:50the national crime agency please put down the phone who are you my name's rav wilding i work on a
26:56program called scam interceptors he's lying he's a scammer he's a scammer i'm not lying look it up
27:02online so you can see how you verify a national crime agency officer they don't phone you out of the
27:06blue it comes off the scammer quits the call and this time and they've all gone off the server
27:13straight away okay so that voice i recognized as one we've listened into before for sure for sure
27:19and he seemed almost deflated at that point that we've disrupted yet another attempt at him to steal
27:25money off someone i couldn't agree more he sounded uh like he almost couldn't believe that we were
27:29there again because they've gone to the trouble of changing passwords they really thought that would
27:33be it and it would be over no such luck i think they're going to realize now that their server is
27:38completely compromised yeah so right now nick looking at the screen how many from that group are
27:44active making calls nothing we have the message on the screen that we very much like to see which is
27:49no live calls waiting no agents on calls top work fact check it's nice actually it does doesn't it
27:56and that's them booted finally we seem to have done it the nca scammers have been forced to completely
28:06abandon their server and we haven't heard from them since we also reported them to the relevant
28:12authorities including the real uk national crime agency and it told us it would never contact
28:18individuals requesting money gift cards or bank details
28:48different from the real uk national crime agency and it would never be able to get you to the
