04:18..and Ray Blackwell was born in 1937 a year ago.
04:24It was a great time for Ray to be here...
04:28..but it was a great time for Blackwell and Barry...
04:32..at the school of Barry's school.
04:48here? Literally upstairs, yes. My dad was a big music fan and from there I suppose a
04:57lot of special things happened at Lonnie Kilty. Noel Redding had already been living here,
05:01the bass player with the Jimi Hendrix experience. Tired and bitter with the rock and roll world,
05:08he was living in LA and himself and his partner, Carl Appleby. As the story goes, they had
05:13a map of the world, they closed their eyes to put their finger down and it was West
05:15Corp. So they moved here. Oh, they could have done so much worse. I tell you what, they
05:19were lucky. He would have played regularly in many places in Clown, but he eventually settled
05:25with a residency here in the Barras where he played for the last 27 odd years of his life.
05:29So he would have had a real lasting legacy, musical legacy here in Clown of Kilty.
05:34And there was a lot of music to play with Bobby Blackwell.
05:40This was Noel's guitar. He presented me with that. That's the
05:45letter that he gave me with it to Bobby and everybody at the Barras. Isn't that amazing?
05:53Every Friday night he played here, he drew the musicians in. They all wanted to come in
05:57and play with them. Like a magnet. Yeah, exactly. I'm trying to look at this guy. Is that Billy
06:04Idler? That's his, yeah. Is it? Yeah. And Springsteen. Is it? Yeah. It's Donovan, I think. Yeah.
06:12Donovan has done a good few gigs here as well, you know. Sorry. Is that Bob Dylan? Yeah. And that's your
06:20woman from the Mamas and the Papas. I believe Christy did 50 days here or 50 nights. Yeah.
06:2650 gigs anyway. Amazing. Yeah. There's quite a few surprising faces. Yeah. There's all types
06:32of music. The music here wouldn't be genre-specific. There's jazz musicians here. There's experimental
06:42noise bands here. There's punk bands here. This is where everyone gets their start, is in
06:48the grassroots independent room. Yes. Whether it's The Frames or Lisa Hannigan or Mick Flannery,
06:54Connor from The Villagers, Lisa O'Neill, they all would have had their first tour shows would
06:59have been here. Do you think that's understood? Do you think that people understand the importance?
07:04I really feel that's been lost, certainly in the last few years. You know, we're now in
07:08the age of the mega gig, the Coldplay or the Taylor Swift that hoover up all the disposable income.
07:15Yes. None of it trickles down to the independent
07:17artists or to the independent venues. To experience a band in an intimate room, it's a lot more
07:24humanising. To experience it at that level, there's nothing like it. You know, you're not
07:27livestock being shoved into a paddock or a big massive arena. Yeah, exactly.
07:32Yeah. Do you feel supported by your community? Do they still come out?
07:36Oh, the bars couldn't exist anywhere else, I don't think. Like, it's fantastic when Christy
07:40Moore comes down or Paddy Keenan or Luca, but we have music here throughout the year, you know,
07:45not just dependent on touring schedules of bands. Like, we have a real ecosystem of local musicians
07:51that, erm, that helped the place to thrive.
07:58It is completely marginalized and difficult. It is like you are everyone in the place.
08:01Beautiful, it was a lot of great deal there. And that is what's called me, the
08:02Space Nation. It is a first time for Christmas Day, but it is a little bit of versus an
08:03event. And it is, as you can imagine, it is because, of the way you're going to get a
08:04banner I'm going to be the same. And it's not going to be the same, your
08:05being the second time. And it's not going to be the same, it's not going to be the same.
08:07It's not going to be a matter of the space. I.
08:08All that is, at all the time, the way you can also show me the kind of
08:10thing to do, and I get my arms and everything. And it's not going to be the same.
16:00He didn't feel guilty at the time
16:07He didn't care, he felt right
16:11They won't understand him
16:17They've got to feed his emptiness
16:20Somehow
16:23There's two little girls wondering where he's gone
16:33All they want is for him to sing the one last song
16:39The rest of the family wondering when he'd arrive
16:45Doing everything they can to survive
16:52Oh, where did he go?
17:01They caught him red-handed
17:04He didn't feel guilty at the time
17:09He didn't care, he felt right
17:14They won't understand him
17:20He's got to feed his emptiness
17:23Somehow
17:26When he wants what he can't have
17:36Resilience is fading
17:38And there's nobody helping
17:42When it comes
17:46It comes too late
17:49He said, I've been here for two years
17:54But don't worry, I've no fears
17:58They caught him red-handed
18:16He didn't feel guilty at the time
18:21He didn't care, he fell right
18:26They won't understand him
18:32He's got to feed his emptiness
18:35Somehow
18:38Somehow
18:44Fine
18:55The rest of the world
18:56Is that one?
18:58The rest of the world
18:58He's got to love
18:59And he's got to do
19:01The rest of his life
19:02And he's been so happy
19:02He's been so happy
19:04And he's been a part of the show
19:04Welcome to the show and welcome to the show of the show.
19:09And it's also a pleasure to welcome you to the show.
19:13It's a lovely show of John Spillane.
19:16How are you, John?
19:18Hi, you're welcome.
19:20You're welcome.
19:22I'm very special to you.
19:24I'm always happy to be here with the show...
19:26...and I'm happy to be here to be here...
19:29...to be here to be here to be here.
19:33That's why I got three years old for me in the first two days of the year.
19:39It was the winter of the year.
19:40Very good.
19:41And did Nadine come to me in the middle of the year?
19:45No, Nadine came to me in the middle of the year.
19:49She was a great girl, a great girl, a great girl.
19:54And Nadine came to me in the middle of the year.
19:58But I didn't know how to do it.
20:00I saw a lot of the former Declan Sinatra in the flesh...
20:03...and also the other group, the other one in the flesh.
20:06And I saw it a very important time.
20:09I was playing a lot of fun...
20:11...that it was a bit of fun, a bit of fun and fun.
20:15So I was playing a lot of things...
20:17...and I was playing a lot on Blackwell and I was playing a lot.
20:21And I was calling from Christie Moore...
20:24...and I was like...
20:25...I've been at Carnegie Hall and I was in The Barras...
20:28..and you can see the venues at the same time.
20:32Thank you very much, John.
20:34And I hope you'll see you on the show on the show at night...
20:38..and I hope you'll see you on the show at night...
20:41..and you'll see you on the show at night and on the show at night.
20:45Well, we'll see you on the show.
20:48I'll see you on the show with John Spillane and the Band of Rens...
20:51..with The Dance of the Territories.
20:58MUSIC PLAYS
21:17Let me tell you about the cherry trees
21:20Every April in our town
21:22They put on the most outrageous clothes
21:25And they sing and they dance around
21:28Hardly anybody sings or dances
21:31Hardly anybody dances or sings
21:34In this town that I call my own
21:36You have to hand it to the cherry trees
21:39They seem to be saying
21:42To me anyway
21:45You know we've travelled all around the sun
21:48You know it's taken us one whole year
21:51Well done, everyone
21:53Well done
21:55Well done
21:57On behalf of me and the cherry trees
21:59Well done
22:01on behalf of myself
22:22Well done
22:24Well done, everyone
22:36You know me, sometimes I think I'm getting old
22:49Not as young as I used to be
22:51So it means even more to me
22:54To see the dance of the cherry trees
22:57And they seem to be saying
22:59Is it only to me?
23:03You know we've travelled all around the sun
23:05You know it's taken us one whole year
23:08Well done, everyone
23:10Well done
23:12You know we've travelled all around the sun
23:16You know it's taken us one whole year
23:20Well done, everyone
23:21Well done
23:24On behalf of me and the cherry tree
23:28Well done
23:31Well done, everyone
23:40Well done, everyone
23:43Well done, everyone
