05:02..with the time of the time of the day...
05:04..like the Valentine's Day.
05:06Hello, Maren. Welcome to CLEARS.
05:07And that's all right, John CLEAR.
05:10What a fabulous place.
05:11We came in here in 1988 from Dublin...
05:13..Philm, my wife and two young kids, Jon and Brian.
05:17We started with just a very small bar which finished...
05:21just about here and then with the yard which was derelict in in the back area
05:27with a lovely old medieval wall we just decided to close in the other side put a
05:32roof on and and go for theater initially but then that branched out into readings
05:38comedy and especially into music
05:43so this is the venue yeah this old wall goes back to at least the 16th century
05:53so we just tidied it up a bit took off all the ivy and weeds and everything were
05:59grown up there the background then we had the stage area which was actually that
06:05was a pigsty in that corner oh fabulous I told various drummers you know you're
06:10playing on the pigsty tonight so
06:15I'm going to play with Johnny Holden on to Clears and it has a fantastic reputation
06:25and I suppose when you were working here Johnny there was that reputation already
06:29and you've continued it on haven't you we have yeah and we're happy to have such a
06:34great venue that people can play in acts like coming here because they feel to get
06:38looked after tell me about some of the acts that have been passing through well over
06:41the years you know you've had bands like Lazarus soul Calexico we have a great story
06:46there about you know Eliza Carty she was inside in the room you know and doing a show and people
06:52really go in there to listen to music because it's you know it's a listening room she was up
06:55on the stage and it was there was to be a break yeah half time you know and she stopped
07:00after about 15 minutes and pulled the band out into the into the pub here and she said now lads these
07:06people are watching us they're really listening to us need up it here get this right like so high standards oh yeah yeah you have to keep it right yeah but you know you have to have youngsters and young bands coming through and maybe you know if they're supporting bigger acts like the four of us coming through or Paddy Casey or these kind of goes so it's a good launch pad for them and then hopefully they'll come back again and again themselves oh yeah yeah that happens over time yeah absolutely yeah
07:30so many have come through the place over the years yeah
08:00wherever they go wherever they go good sense of humor I like that pack it away and take it on the road
08:12walking slowly away from the departure gate I board that plane and I spend my time thinking
08:26I'm asking the guy who sat to my left how he's left this town without wreck or regret
08:44he laughs at that in a way I won't forget took me 50 odd years to pack it up you said told me I'm doing well told me I'm on track told me never forget the weight on my back
09:02it shaped you said yeah it shaped you'd be grateful for that
09:08but I feel I'm losing the fight of my life running on half a snack bar I ate on the drive while
09:25leaving the city cause I knew I'd be mustering all I could give to keep my head above all the water
09:37but out of the clouds look for light in the fire keep both my feet on the ground
09:46here comes the sound of footsteps out on the tarmac they lead to places I don't want to go
09:48got paint on my soles and I'm ready to wear them just sketch me a trail of my own cause he told me I'm doing well told me I'm on track told me never forget the weight on my back
09:55it shaped you said yeah it shapes you It shaped you
10:03I'm grateful for it 그게?
10:06To sketch me a trail of my own
10:08Cause he told me I'm doing well
