Late-night hosts snicker at President Donald Trump on a nearly daily basis in 2018 — and on Tuesday, they were joined by world leaders.
Transcript
00:00We are the laughing stock. They're all laughing at us.
00:04Having a laugh at the expense of President Donald Trump is a daily occurrence for those
00:08in the media, but on Tuesday, world leaders got in on the fun. In a much-reported
00:12moment that is most easily described as this...
00:15Trump told the U.N. General Assembly in a speech that in almost two years,
00:19my administration has accomplished more than almost any administration in our country.
00:23Laughter erupted at such a bold claim, prompting the commander-in-chief to respond,
00:27didn't expect that reaction, but that's OK.
00:30The moment struck several commentators as ironic, given that during his 2016 presidential
00:34campaign, Trump often implored that the country needed a leader who wasn't a laughing stock,
00:38as he tweeted in 2014.
00:40Never once to miss an opportunity to poke fun at POTUS, the late-night host joined in
00:44on the laughter on their Tuesday night shows.
00:46On CBS's Late Show, host Stephen Colbert joked,
00:49Don't worry, Mr. President, they're not laughing at you. They're laughing with each other at you.
00:56Prior to that, Colbert brought up the fact that Trump was so late to the U.N. that the
01:00Ecuadorian president had to take his place in the sequence of speeches.
01:03Come on, man. You're from New York. You know what the traffic is like when the U.N. is here,
01:07Colbert said. Just take the subway.
01:09I know it smells like pee, but rumor is you like that.
01:13Over on NBC's Late Night host, Seth Meyers recapped the moment with a dig at the president,
01:17saying,
01:18That's right. President Trump claimed that he has accomplished more than any other president
01:23in history, and world leaders in the audience laughed.
01:26Though technically, they were still laughing from when he said,
01:30Hello, I'm the president of the United States.
01:33Meanwhile, on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live, Kimmel compared the speech to when your alcoholic
01:37uncle grabs a microphone at your wedding. No good can come of it, he said.
01:41On NBC's Tonight show, host Jimmy Fallon took the opportunity to reference the White House's
01:45approach to foreigners, quipping,
01:47Halfway through his speech, every foreign leader there was begging to be deported.
01:50Riffing about the U.N.'s unexpected response to Trump's claim about his administration's
01:54success, Fallon said,
01:55Trump hasn't heard that much laughter since his night with Stormy Daniels.
01:58And over on TBS's Conan, Conan O'Brien had this to say.
02:01At the U.N. today, President Trump told world leaders that his administration has
02:05accomplished more than any in U.S. history, and the whole audience laughed.
02:09And Trump was furious, because for a few seconds he accidentally made some foreigners happy.
