Late-night hosts took issue with President Donald Trump calling to congratulate Russian president Vladimir Putin on his re-election.
Transcript
00:00Putin handily beat his closest rival, a poisoned corpse.
00:05That was Seth Meyers' take Monday night on Russian President Vladimir Putin's
00:08totally shocking and unbelievable re-election that absolutely no one saw coming.
00:12On Tuesday, President Donald Trump called Putin to congratulate him,
00:15a move that didn't sit well with other late-night hosts who had a few words for the president last night.
00:20That requires a strong response, so Donald Trump called him up to say,
00:24attaboy.
00:25On CBS's Late Show, host Stephen Colbert noted,
00:27You've got to give Putin credit. I mean, he did win by the most made-up votes.
00:33Showing footage from a bipartisan group of senators being asked by reporters about Trump congratulating Putin,
00:38Colbert mimicked their deadpan responses and threw a smoke bomb to avoid answering.
00:45Are they gone?
00:47Over on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live! the host reflected on the relationship between Trump and his KGBFF, Putin.
00:53Vladimir Putin just poisoned two people.
00:55Trump is calling to say, hey, congrats!
00:58Kimmel also pointed out this rather unfortunate detail.
01:02By the way, Trump congratulated him, even though his national security advisor wrote in capital letters,
01:08do not congratulate him!
01:10And on TBS, host Conan O'Brien also addressed Trump's call during his opening monologue, saying this.
01:15President Trump called Vladimir Putin and congratulated him on his presidential win.
01:20Coincidentally, uh, Trump made the same call to Putin on November 9th, 2016.
01:25The host went on to break down his joke for the audience.
01:28I like that's not one people laugh at.
01:30You can see everyone doing the math and going,
01:33yes, it lines up.
01:35It's not funny, but yeah.
