Transcript
00:00Let's be outspoken. Let's be resilient. Let's all be silence breakers.
00:05This episode of The Hollywood Reporter News is brought to you by American Airlines,
00:09Hollywood's favorite airline.
00:10Jennifer Lawrence received the Sherry Lansing Leadership Award at The Hollywood Reporter's
00:14annual Women in Entertainment Breakfast on Wednesday. It was presented to her by Lansing.
00:20The breakfast comes as the entertainment industry finds itself in the middle of a massive culture
00:24shift, with brave women coming forward to speak out against men in Hollywood who have abused
00:29their power. Lawrence is also on the cover of the magazine's annual Women in Entertainment issue
00:34and was interviewed by Oprah Winfrey for the accompanying story. On the red carpet,
00:38she revealed this about the experience.
00:40Yeah, I went to her house, which was just insane. I left crying. I, like, called my parents.
00:46It was, like, life-changing.
00:47In her acceptance speech, Lawrence told the audience,
00:50We must align with the diverse communities marginalized by the status quo to create a more just world.
00:56She added,
00:57I want to walk in the shoes of the women who were honored before me today.
01:00She also referenced Gal Gadot and told this great story about her.
01:04She came up to me at an award show and I didn't, I just went, she was so gorgeous.
01:08I didn't, like, recognize her. I was just like, who is, what is that?
01:12Gadot made a surprise appearance to present a student named Carla with a Wonder Woman scholarship
01:16from Warner Brothers.
01:17I've had the privilege of portraying a superhero on screen, but the young women here today
01:23are the real superheroes. They've overcome so many challenges in their lives and they're driven
01:30to do more. They are the true leaders of tomorrow.
01:34This was the first time Warner Brothers has offered the scholarship, which is a four-year
01:38full ride to Loyola Marymount University. Carla started at the university a few weeks ago.
01:43Gadot revealed that she wouldn't have been able to continue at the school without this
01:47funding. Similar to many other great young women in this program, her education is hanging
01:52by a thread.
01:53Angelina Jolie also gave a powerful keynote speech, calling for international female
01:58solidarity through art. She said,
02:00We have a level of freedom that is unimaginable for millions of other women around the world.
02:06Women who live with conflict and terrorism and displacement and poverty, who never get
02:13a chance, whose voices are always silenced.
02:18Jolie told the audience that every woman has the right not only to independence and security,
02:22but to live her life and express herself to the fullest, including through art, ideas,
02:27and politics.
02:28And that right is denied so often to women because it is so powerful.
02:34Sarah Silverman opened the event with a comical speech that also conveyed several powerful
02:38messages.
02:39We have a responsibility as women to reject this toxic drug that's in the air that makes
02:46us feel like the success of one woman can only come at the failure of another. It's not true.
02:51Silverman gave a shout out to working dad Justin Timberlake, who also took part in the presentation.
02:56He announced scholarships for THR's highly competitive Women in Entertainment Mentorship Program
03:01and three Fulbright scholarships also to LMU. These were all a part of the over $1 million
03:06in university scholarships presented at the event to young women from disadvantaged backgrounds
03:11who have taken part in the nine-year-old program.
03:14Timberlake had this message for the women in the room.
03:16Strong, beautiful souls. I'm happy to be here to be your arm candy. Angelina warned me that
03:27I was basically only here to be objectified. I said, that's absolutely fair.
03:32The singer and actor went on to show appreciation for his mother and his wife, Jessica Biel, saying,
03:37I was raised by a strong woman. I was lucky enough to convince a strong woman to marry me.
03:41And Shonda Rhimes, the first guest editor of THR's Women in Entertainment issue, also gave an empowering
03:47speech highlighting how the wave of sexual harassment and assault allegations is making this a crucial
03:52period for women.
03:53This lightning fast, brightly lit. We handmaids are over these red hats. Westeros is ours.
03:59We are reclaiming our time. We're swinging our lemonade baseball bats. We are all Wonder Woman now.
04:03Guess what? We are done with this molestery hot mess that makes men feel they can put their hands
04:09anywhere on us. So there's the door because I gotta go reckoning moment in time.
04:13Rhimes revealed that guest editing the issue left her with a protective feeling for her fellow female
04:18industry leaders, dynamos, and groundbreakers, who are a force in film and TV, and how they are
04:23portrayed.
04:24Because after all, in this business, how we portray women tells the world who women are.
04:29And I just want the world to know how powerful and creative and badass and original you all
04:34are.
