Michael G. Rubien talks helping to free Meek Mill & 76ers.
Transcript
00:00Tell me, how are the 76ers looking in the offseason?
00:03We're excited.
00:04You know, last year certainly didn't end the way that we hoped it would end,
00:07but we learn and we grow from those things,
00:09and this year I think the team's really motivated.
00:11Everyone's going to take that experience and use it to be even better.
00:13Love that, yeah.
00:15And I also love seeing your friendship with Meek.
00:17It seems really special.
00:18How has that kind of evolved over time and strengthened through everything?
00:21You know, Meek started as just my boy.
00:23We just hung out, we had fun, and life was peaceful.
00:25And then some crazy judge had to send him to prison for not committing a crime in 2017,
00:29and, you know, sitting there firsthand and seeing it, you know, I couldn't let it stand.
00:32And I think together with Jay-Z we just said, no way.
00:35We did everything we could to first get him out of prison.
00:38And then for me, I thought our criminal justice system worked well
00:41before I watched what happened to Meek.
00:42And then I realized it wasn't just about him going to prison for not committing a crime,
00:46but this happens to millions of people, 200,000 people a year that go to prison for not committing a crime.
00:50And I think now, you know, our friendship has gone from being boys, having fun, you know,
00:54doing boys trips, going to Vegas, going to clubs, going to basketball games,
00:58hanging out, playing basketball, all the fun things.
01:00And now, you know, I'd say the biggest thing we can talk about is what we're doing with the Reform Alliance,
01:04how we can get a million people plus out of the criminal justice system.
01:07So, yeah, it's gone from all fun to a lot of work and a little bit of fun.
01:11Very well said.
01:13And then just personally, you've come so far in such little time.
01:16What's next for you this year, personally?
01:18You know, for me, I don't really think about what's next.
01:20I think the thing, if you'd say, what am I really excited about?
01:23I'm excited to change the laws in Pennsylvania because that's the first state we're focused on with the Reform Alliance.
01:28And that's going to have a huge impact on, you know, more than 100,000 people in Pennsylvania
01:32that are unfairly stuck within the system.
01:34Pennsylvania's got some of the worst probation laws of any state.
01:37It's the third worst state in the country.
01:39One in 35 people are on probation and parole.
01:41So we're really focused on changing those laws, hopefully by October.
01:44We've got Democrats and Republicans working together to do that.
01:47And then Fanatics, we're growing like crazy.
01:50It's been a fun ride.
01:52The company's gone from $250 million to we'll be over $3 billion next year.
01:55We're just getting started.
01:56So that's a lot of fun as well.
01:57It'd be great to win a couple championships for the Six of the Devils as well.
02:01It's going to happen.
02:02I can feel it.
02:03Absolutely.
02:04Thank you so much.
02:05Yeah, you too.
