00:00Hello friends!
00:01Thanos' days may be numbered, so after April's Avengers Endgame, Marvel Studios will need
00:05to snap up a new big bad for its heroes to be pitted against.
00:09This week on Heat Vision Breakdown, we look ahead at the future of the MCU after the Mad
00:13Titan and make the case for why villains from Magneto to Doctor Doom to Kang the Conqueror
00:17could be the next nemesis to menace the Avengers for years to come.
00:24There are a lot of question marks about the state of the MCU following Endgame.
00:28Will Steve Rogers die?
00:29Who will play Wolverine now that Disney will have access to the X-Men and Hugh Jackman
00:33has officially hung up his claws?
00:34Richard Madden?
00:35I don't know.
00:36Will Robert Downey Jr. retire and finally be able to shave his goatee?
00:40Those things get itchy.
00:41Perhaps the biggest question, however, is how Marvel Studios will top Thanos.
00:44Fortunately for Marvel, Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox comes with the rights to
00:48the Fantastic Four and X-Men, and that includes all of their villains, even Magneto, a suitable
00:53candidate for the next major villain in the MCU going forward.
00:56While Fox's X-Men series has explored the character again and again in pretty much every decade
01:00of the 20th Century at this point, there's still plenty more to do with the Master of
01:03Magnetism.
01:04Frankly, it'd be nice to see him in a movie where he isn't just complaining about how
01:07he and his best friend Charles disagree on the future of mutantkind, an argument they've
01:12been having for literal decades.
01:14Look, at a certain point, you've got to just accept that your friend from college who constantly
01:18advocates for killing or enslaving the majority of humanity might not be the dude you want
01:22to list as your emergency contact.
01:27Magneto could even be used as part of an Avengers vs X-Men movie that would adapt the 2012 comic
01:33book storyline.
01:34In that event, the Avengers are criticized for turning a blind eye to the treatment of
01:37mutants and not doing enough to help them, which is kind of odd considering a group whose
01:41members include a giant green roid monster and a kid who shoots goo out of his wrist
01:45would probably fall under the mutant tag for most folks.
01:48Anyway, it's easy to imagine Magneto as an extremist whose methods are wrong but whose
01:53grievances are right, and in certain ways that theme has been explored with past Marvel baddies
01:57such as Black Panther's Erik Killmonger or Thanos himself.
02:00Presumably, the MCU will be a radically different place once mutants are introduced and perhaps
02:04the Avengers won't act fast enough to help out this newly super-powered population.
02:09Probably because they're too busy eating shwarma or goofing off with Thor's hammer.
02:12Just kidding.
02:13Avengers will probably die in Endgame.
02:16Perhaps Magneto could even inspire Professor X to launch the X-Men as an alternative to
02:20the Avengers.
02:21A Pepsi to Nick Fury's Coke, if you will.
02:23But okay, maybe Magneto's not your cup of tea.
02:25Well, how about Galactus?
02:27The Devourer of Worlds would certainly make a sizable threat for any gathering of heroes
02:31and has remained one of Marvel's most popular villains since his debut in 1966's Fantastic
02:36Four number 48.
02:38Considered one of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's finest creations, the character previously appeared
02:41as a giant purple cloud in Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer in 2007, something
02:46that might have felt more at home in a Prince music video than in a big budget superhero film.
02:50It's about time we see Galactus in all of his giant pointy-headed helmeted glory on
02:54the big screen.
02:55Galactus feeds off the energy of planets and has most often appeared in the pages of Fantastic
02:59Four and Silver Surfer.
03:00As such, he could be the kind of villain, like Loki, who serves as an antagonist in more than
03:05one film.
03:06Ant-Man co-writer and vice director Adam McKay has said he'd like to direct a Silver Surfer
03:10film.
03:11Perhaps Galactus could appear in that movie, which would see Silver Surfer rebel against
03:14him and refuse to help him devour planets.
03:17Galactus's inevitable search for a new herald would surely lead him to Earth and into conflict
03:21with the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and the Eternals, who we've
03:25yet to see in the MCU.
03:26How cool would it be if an upcoming movie like Guardians of the Galaxy 3 ended with a post-credits
03:30scene of Galactus awakening in the cosmos?
03:33Pretty to vary, according to our cool meter.
03:36If Galactus is too big for you, what about Kang the Conqueror?
03:39Kang is actually the father, at least one version of him, of Fantastic Four leader Reed Richards.
03:44Kang, or Nathaniel Richards, first appeared as Rama Tut in 1963's Fantastic Four Number
03:4819, before appearing as Kang in Avengers Number 8 a year later.
03:52Nathaniel discovered a time machine created by Doctor Doom and used it to travel across
03:56time, establishing himself as a pharaoh, Rama Tut, a despot in the future, Kang, and a
04:00master of time, Immortus.
04:01He's a busy guy.
04:02Over the years, he's used time travel to pit the Avengers against alternate versions of
04:06themselves, established empires throughout time and space, and even became a major cosmic
04:11player.
04:12You know, basically what Elon Musk does in his head when he gets bored during a Tesla board
04:15meeting.
04:16Kang's history gets somewhat wacky, as comic book time travel so often does, and involves
04:20a series of deaths, rebirths, and clone fakeouts.
04:22But, Marvel Studios has a penchant for simplifying certain characters and concepts to make them
04:27easier to digest.
04:28Perhaps the easiest way to handle Kang would be as a scientist who gets his hands on the
04:31time stone after the events of Endgame, and brings the time displaced Fantastic Four
04:35back to the world, setting the stage for the next major crossover event with Kang at
04:39the center.
04:40Boom.
04:41Done.
04:42You're welcome, Figge.
04:43Oh my god, it's Feige.
04:44Okay, Feige.
04:45Here's another no-brainer for the next villain.
04:47The Beyonder.
04:48Why is it a no-brainer?
04:49I'm glad you asked.
04:50The Beyonder is at the center of a story, the Russo brothers have already said they'd
04:53return to Marvel to helm, if given the chance.
04:55The omnipotent cosmic being orchestrated a classic comic event called the Secret Wars,
05:00and has been suggested to be the most powerful being in the universe.
05:03He's the kind of adversary who doesn't pose a physically interesting threat to Marvel's
05:07heroes, given that he could wipe them all out just by thinking about it, but he has
05:10created scenarios that have led to some of the greatest battles in the Marvel universe.
05:15In 1984's Secret Wars, the Beyonder created Battleworld, he's not great with names, and
05:19kidnapped a number of Earth's heroes and villains in order to watch a never-ending skirmish
05:23between good and evil, much like the Rast Lore from that episode of Dial M for Monkey
05:27in the 90's Cartoon Network classic Dexter's Laboratory.
05:30I just really liked that episode and wanted to work it in.
05:32Though an action-heavy event, some of the more interesting moments in Secret Wars happened
05:36when characters who didn't often interact were stranded together and forced to form new
05:41alliances.
05:42He forced both heroes and villains to consider their alignment with good and evil.
05:46Characters like Magneto tried to be a hero, but the mistrust of the Avengers saw him return
05:50to villainy.
05:51Alright, we've saved the best for last, and he needs no introduction.
05:54Actually, I guess he does, otherwise you wouldn't know who I'm talking about.
05:57Of all the villains yet to appear in the MCU, Doctor Doom stands head and shoulders above
06:01the rest.
06:02While he's appeared in every Fantastic Four film adaptation, the character hasn't exactly...
06:07been done justice.
06:08Let's go with that.
06:09In the comics, he's been a dictator, stolen the power cosmic, taken the powers of the
06:13Beyonder, traveled through time, and even assumed the role of God.
06:16You know, the stuff Elon Musk does in his head when he gets bored.
06:19Gotcha again, Musk!
06:20Outside of the comics, he's even served as the inspiration for Darth Vader.
06:23Doom offers a complexity that shouldn't be rushed.
06:26Instead, the MCU should give us a chance to see his journey from Reed Richards' friend
06:30to a villain who earned the attention of the Galactic Council.
06:33While Doom should appear in the Fantastic Four film, Marvel would be wise to hold off on a fully-realized
06:38version of the character for some time and instead wait until they can reveal him as
06:41a force wholly worthy of taking on the might of Marvel's heroes.
06:45Doom can make his presence known in Doctor Strange and Black Panther sequels as Marvel
06:49steadily delves into his darkness as both magician and dictator.
06:53While a complaint with Thanos was that he was built up for too long and seemed to be doing
06:56nothing in between the time of his reveal in the Avengers and getting the Infinity Stones
07:00in Infinity War, Marvel could easily avoid this with Doom by integrating his quest for power
07:05more tightly into the films.
07:07He's also a slightly more interesting character study than his purple, villainous counterpart
07:12in the sense that Doctor Doom is a man, not a towering Titan who is already a formidable
07:16foe before he even got his hands on those Infinity Stones.
07:19If he's handled with care, Doctor Doom should be worth the wait.
07:22And the good news is that if he's mishandled, hey, at least we're used to it at this point.
07:25Who do you think should be the next big bad in the MCU after Thanos?
07:29Let us know in the comments right down there, subscribe, unless you're a villain.
07:32And join us here every Friday morning for new episodes of Heat Vision Breakdown.
07:35I think they should go with Elon Musk.
