Transcript
00:00Word on the street is you just won a special Tony.
00:02Yes, you're very well.
00:03You're more prepared than other reporters.
00:06Oh no, how special is that for you?
00:09And what does that mean for you to be able to...
00:11For a comedian to get an award like this is huge.
00:14And the specials come out and it's gotten some nice acclaim.
00:18So to be able to be...
00:20I don't know, it's just...
00:20I never thought it was something...
00:22I never thought it was possible.
00:23And this thing has...
00:25Just for us, my show, it's...
00:27It's just gone way better than I thought it could possibly do.
00:32I wrote it in a small room.
00:33I was doing it to a dozen people.
00:35So to get a Tony for it is like...
00:38I'm a little verklempt.
00:39A little emotional.
00:40Why didn't you think that this would happen for you?
00:42Was there like a sense of imposter syndrome?
00:44No, no.
00:44I mean, well, there is that.
00:45Especially now that you mention it.
00:47But no, it doesn't happen to comedians much.
00:50It's happened to like maybe five or six in the history of the main stem.
00:55In the history of Broadway.
00:55So for a comedian to get a special Tony...
00:59I mean, the comics that I worship, like Leguizamo and Billy Crystal...
01:05Like, it's something that's reserved for your influences.
01:08So to get one yourself is gobsmacking.
01:10It's really cool.
01:11Is there anyone that you're particularly excited to meet?
01:14Maybe for the first time tonight.
01:15Oh my gosh.
01:16I mean, look.
01:17I have always, always, always wanted to meet Angelina Jolie.
01:23And she just walked by.
01:24So that's pretty cool.
01:25So that'd be really neat.
01:27But yeah, there are a bunch of people.
01:28But mostly it's my friends.
01:29Like Dan Radcliffe and...
01:31I mean, I call him Dan.
01:32No, but yeah.
01:33Daniel Radcliffe is really lovely.
01:35And like, Lindsay's here.
01:37And like, it's just seeing my pals.
01:39That's the thing.
01:39Like, it's a big night to celebrate your buddies and stuff like that.
01:42But if John Leguizamo is here, I am genuinely going to jump on top of him.
01:44I've never met the guy.
01:45I love him.
01:46He's such an influence.
01:47And so yeah, probably John.
01:48And any words of advice for aspiring performers, comedians, artists that are watching tonight?
01:54Go to where you think your people are.
01:56If you go to where your people are, the chances are you're right.
01:59If you go to where your people are, like, I went to England because I felt like that's where my people were.
02:04And I found comedians who were like most like me, I thought.
02:07And like, and it just paid off big.
02:10There are three things every young artist should know, which is, according to this guy named John Baldessari, which is talent is cheap.
02:15You have to be possessed.
02:16And you have to be in the right place in the right time.
02:18And the third thing is the only one that you can like really control.
02:21So like go to where you think all of the opportunity is creatively.
02:26And like, sorry to give you like a real thing I feel instead of, but yeah.
02:30We need it.
02:30We need it.
02:31Thank you so much for stopping by.
02:32Yeah.
02:32Nice meeting you.
