The Oscars are not just about who wins the trophies and goes home with all the awards but it's also about who wins the runway that is the red carpet. The Hollywood Reporter's Artistic and Fashion Direction Alison Edmond breaks down some of the top looks from our leading ladies this awards season.
Transcript
00:00Styling on the red carpet this season is very deliberate.
00:03There's obviously a lot of thought and planning
00:06that has gone into it,
00:07and you can see a narrative running through it.
00:10It's very careful.
00:11If you look at the leading ladies this season,
00:14or all of our nominees, you'll see patterns,
00:17you'll see designers that are being repeated,
00:19that keep coming up.
00:20There's certain favorites that are definitely out there.
00:23So Zoe Saldana wore Yves Saint Laurent
00:30to the Emilia Perez premiere in LA.
00:33And of course, Yves Saint Laurent were also producers of the film,
00:37so it's a logical choice for her.
00:39And she's been wearing Saint Laurent to,
00:42I would say 90% of her appearances for Emilia Perez.
00:45And she's so elegant.
00:46Everything she wears is just, she carries it off beautifully.
00:49And this was just a stunning look for her.
00:53Zoe also wore Saint Laurent for the BAFTAs,
00:58and she wore a slim column dress
01:00with this amazing kind of lace plume around the shoulders,
01:05which looked fantastic.
01:10At the Critics' Choice, Zoe wore Saint Laurent.
01:13Again, this was a beautiful kind of scarlet red satin look,
01:16and she topped it off with a Cartier black satin choker
01:20with a little diamond kind of buckle.
01:23For the Golden Globes, Zoe wore Saint Laurent again.
01:27It was a chocolate brown sequin kind of column dress
01:29with this wonderful kind of brown taffeta shawl.
01:33This was my favorite look of the Golden Globes of anybody.
01:37And she just looked amazing.
01:38Again, they all walked in on the red carpet with this rose backdrop,
01:42and she just looked spectacular.
01:44She won the evening for me.
01:45She looked fantastic.
01:46For the Oscars, I guess it's an easy prediction to predict Saint Laurent for this,
01:51because the producers are going to be there.
01:53They've produced Amelia Perez, so I'm predicting that she will wear Saint Laurent.
01:58I'm hoping that she wears some kind of color.
02:00I'd almost be disappointed if she's wearing black.
02:03I think she looks so wonderful in kind of jewel colors,
02:05so I'm hoping she wears some kind of jewel tone.
02:15Demi Moore works with Brad Goresky, and she's had an incredible season.
02:21She's had a very eclectic mix of looks.
02:24For the critics' choice, she wore Schiaparelli couture.
02:27She wore this beautiful navy kind of slashed ribbon gown with this incredible kind of curved
02:33bodice with the little kind of bauble at the front.
02:36It was just spectacular.
02:38She looks wonderful in navy with her jet black hair.
02:41Navy and black is one of my favorite color combinations,
02:44and she just looks so chic.
02:46I think this was my favorite gown of her whole campaign, actually.
02:48Ever since 2023 and Barbie, there's this trend of method dressing,
02:53as they're calling it, on the red carpet, where people take their character into their red carpet
02:59dressing.
02:59And I think, yes, this Schiaparelli dress for Demi was the same thing.
03:03I think the restrictions as well of being so tightly laced in and the stitches on the back,
03:09you know, resembling Demi's character in the substance.
03:16For the Golden Globes, Demi wore Armani Privé, and this was,
03:21it was completely fitting because this was the first award I think she won of the season,
03:25and this was her comeback award.
03:27This was the beginning of like, oh, wow, is Demi going to kill this season?
03:31And she killed in the dress, and she looked fabulous.
03:34She was wearing gold.
03:35She won the Golden Globe.
03:36This was a little bit of a pivotal moment for her.
03:39For Demi, she's a little bit of a wild card.
03:42I'm not sure if I can predict what she's going to wear.
03:44My only instinct would be maybe she would go back to Armani because
03:48it brought her luck on the Golden Globe stage.
03:51So it might be a little bit of a talisman for her, but let's see.
03:58For the Wicked premiere in LA, Cynthia Erivo wore custom Louis Vuitton in patterned green leather.
04:05This was the beginning of the crazy green moment for Cynthia.
04:09It was fantastic.
04:12I love what her and her stylist Jason Bolden have done throughout this whole Wicked tour.
04:18And the nails, the jewelry, everything has just been incredible.
04:24She's such a character.
04:25She's such a fashion lover.
04:27And I think that's what, for people like me in the fashion industry,
04:30I think that's what comes across.
04:32That she appreciates every single tiny detail.
04:40And then in Mexico, she wore this incredible Tom Brown custom look,
04:46which had these almost like sort of claws on the shoulder,
04:50which were, they evoked memories of Margaret Hamilton,
04:55the original actress who played the Wicked Witch of the West in the 1939 film.
04:59The shadows of the posters of these claws of the witch.
05:10And for the Golden Globe, she wore a custom Louis Vuitton dress,
05:13which was like a sort of black and silver overlay lace look with a peplum.
05:18This was quite divisive.
05:19Some people didn't like it.
05:20I personally loved it.
05:21I thought this was beautiful.
05:23And again, she can carry it off.
05:24Some people, it tends to wear them, but Cynthia, no.
05:27She can carry anything off.
05:29And I thought this was stunning.
05:30I thought it was fantastic.
05:33For the Oscars, I would imagine, because Cynthia is a Louis Vuitton ambassador,
05:38I would imagine she's going to do something spectacular in Louis Vuitton.
05:42And of course, they have to also do the Vanity Fair party.
05:46They have to do the after party.
05:49So I would expect we're going to see two or three amazing Louis Vuitton looks.
05:53So Ariana Grande with her stylist Mimi Cuttrell has just done, she's totally been channeling
06:07her Dorothy character, her, you know, her Glinda character.
06:10It's all of the good people in The Wizard of Oz all kind of rolled into one.
06:15And her outfit at the Wicked premiere in LA by Tom Brown was, it was Dorothy's little gingham dress.
06:21It was Glinda in The Wizard of Oz in her pink float.
06:25It was everything kind of pulled together and it was just goodness itself.
06:30And in Europe, it was really nice to see a little change from the pink and see her wear lemon.
06:41This was a Ralph Lauren design and she had the very cute little glasses as well.
06:46And another Ode to Glinda, but she's very, Ariana is very ethereal and she has that kind of mystical
06:58way about her, which, which just works with all these light fabrics with all these kind of tools
07:04and all the chiffons. And she, she's very light and airy in herself.
07:14And in Palm Springs, a little bit of a departure, Ariana went for something a little bit more structured
07:21in Louis Vuitton, like a silver kind of bubble. But again, it's Glinda's bubble. It's the thing that she
07:26kind of floats away in. For the Oscars, I feel like, I feel like she's going a little bit
07:32sculptural. I feel like she's working, she's looking towards all these kind of shapes and
07:37corsets. So I wouldn't be surprised if she returns to Schiaparelli. We shot her in the most extraordinary
07:43Schiaparelli dress for our cover of Hollywood Reporter. So I'd be excited if she wore something
07:48by Schiaparelli for the Oscars. So I'm crossing fingers. It's been a great season
07:53on the red carpet. The acting nominees this season are some of the most stylish
07:58ladies in the acting business. So it's been a wonderful red carpet season. I expect nothing less at the Oscars.
