00:00I've been telling everybody for years now, I'm gonna get the EGOT, I'm gonna get the EGOT.
00:04But I know like half the people that I said it to were like, yeah, okay, girl, whatever.
00:08Now it's a real thing. Like it's a real thing.
00:13Kandi Burris is getting closer and closer to EGOT status after earning both Emmy and
00:18Tony nominations within the span of days. Earlier this week, the singer and songwriter,
00:23producer and Real Housewives of Atlanta star was nominated for a Southeast Emmy Award
00:27for her work in La Musica de la Familia. The very next day, Burris was once again nominated this
00:33time for a Tony Award alongside her husband for their work on the piano lesson. The multi-hyphenate
00:39is already a Grammy winner for writing TLC's hit, No Scrubs. Burris opened up to The Hollywood
00:44Reporter about getting the exciting news, having this recognition and her whirlwind last week.
00:50So me and my husband was sitting up in the bed. I didn't have a wig on. All I had on was my bunnet,
00:56no makeup. I videotaped myself and I thought about posting it, but I was looking crazy.
01:01I just feel like all the praying, all the angels up there that's been working for me,
01:10like it's just all coming together and it's kind of overwhelming.
01:14Should she win her latest nominations, Burris would be just an Oscar away from reaching the
01:19coveted EGOT status, which the star acknowledged could happen in a number of ways, noting that being
01:25the center of a project was never her goal, but rather being able to put the work behind something
01:30she believes in.
01:30I never like really just got stuck on, oh, I have to be the star of something. Like I don't have to
01:37be in the front and I'm cool with somebody else taking all the shine and still being the one that
01:43did the work to make it happen because I still feel gratification from that. I still feel like,
01:49you know, oh, I, you know, I was a part of something amazing, something great.
01:53But for now, Burris has stayed focused on what's in front of her with two accolades that are no easy
01:58feat. When discussing her Tony nomination, she admits tackling Broadway was an adjustment.
02:03I really was kind of clueless, like, okay, I knew I wanted to, but I was like, how do I go about
02:09getting into this world? But producing her Emmy nominated project was a slightly different
02:15experience. Obviously, you know, I have a love for music, so it was kind of easy, but
02:19I didn't know that it was going to get us here, put it that way.
02:26Burris also briefly touched on the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike as writers
02:31fight for better compensation and working conditions amid the rise of streaming services.
02:36As times change, you have to update the rules and regulations. I mean, with these streaming
02:42services, we got to make sure that people are still able to benefit off of their work.
02:47Now, aside from Emmys and Tonys, the Bravo star is also gearing up for the latest season of the
02:52Real Housewives of Atlanta, a show that holds a massive fandom and a special place in her heart.
02:58For 15 years, we've been doing this show and people have followed our lives, seeing our ups
03:03and downs, rooted for us. You know, people are really rooting for us.
03:08Right.
03:09Man, and that's what I love about it.
03:11And as for what's coming up next.
03:13Right now, we're working on the revival of The Wiz.
03:17Okay.
03:18And back to Broadway.
03:19I just finished a movie as well that Tammy Roman produced. It's called Whatever It Takes
03:24Is. She, myself, Braley Evans, and AJ Johnson. This is really, really good. I'm excited about
03:31that. I just finished that last night.
