NBC has dumped the annual awards show from its schedule next year following widespread criticism of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

00:00It's official. NBC will not air the Golden Globes next year. The decision follows months
00:04of criticism of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for a lack of diversity among
00:08its members as well as ethical lapses. NBCUniversal released a statement Monday that read,
00:14We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform. However,
00:18change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time
00:22to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization
00:28executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.
00:33The move comes despite the HFPA announcing a slew of potential reforms last week aimed at addressing
00:38its lack of diversity and other ethics issues. But those reforms were slammed for not going far
00:43enough and called, quote, window-dressing platitudes by Time's Up. They also prompted three high-profile
00:48studios, Netflix, Amazon, and WarnerMedia, to distance themselves from the HFPA. A group of
00:54100 publicity firms likewise said they would, quote, continue to refrain from any HFPA-sanctioned
00:59events until more meaningful reform was made. Hollywood stars like Tom Cruise have also taken a
01:04stance amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the HFPA. Cruise returned his three Golden Globe
01:09statues. Plus, Scarlett Johansson, who has been nominated for four Golden Globe awards, urged
01:14Hollywood to take a step back from the HFPA. While Golden Globe winner Mark Ruffalo recently
01:19offered in a statement, now is the time to step up and right the wrongs of the past. The HFPA has
01:24been under fire since it was revealed in a Los Angeles Times piece in February that its organization
01:29had no black journalists among its 87 members. For the latest updates on this story, go to THR.com.
