00:00Brendan Fraser says he has no plans to attend the Golden Globes, even if nominated.
00:05In a cover story for GQ, the actor opened up about his life since he said in 2018 that former
00:11Hollywood Foreign Press Association member Philip Burke had groped him. Burke was expelled from the
00:16organization behind the Golden Globes in 2021 for comments about the Black Lives Matter movement.
00:23The actor admitted to feeling a little bit of a heart palpitation discussing this,
00:26adding that talking about his experience can still trigger him.
00:30But it's okay, because my hope is that I can be recognized at this time in my life and career
00:35for my professional efforts, rather than the trope of the comeback kid as being a standard in culture,
00:41sports, coming from behind, being written off, and then coming back.
00:44The Whale star, who's been getting awards buzz for his portrayal of the film's reclusive English teacher
00:49trying to reconnect with his estranged teen daughter, also opened up about whether he'd be
00:55involved with a Golden Globe ceremony if nominated.
00:58I have more history with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association than I have respect for the
01:03Hollywood Foreign Press Association. No, I will not participate. He added,
01:07It's because of the history that I have with them, and my mother didn't raise a hypocrite.
01:11You can call me a lot of things, but not that.
01:14Fraser said the experience left him with little faith in the HFPA's proposed reforms,
01:19which included expanded membership and new rules on accepting gifts, after the Globe's 2022 ceremony
01:25was a lower-profile, non-televised affair. Maybe time will tell if they're going to. I don't know
01:31what they're going to do. I don't know. Despite no plans to attend the Globes,
01:35Fraser is still looking forward to the rest of awards season, including an Oscars run.
01:40I owe it to myself. I owe it to the filmmakers. I know I owe it to those fans who paid to come and
01:45see me and stand in line in the sun. And you know, all of that. I owe it to my kids. This is my shot.
