00:00Amid the Los Angeles wildfires, some 2025 award shows like the Critics' Choice Awards have been
00:05postponed, while others like the Grammys are proceeding as planned and set to raise funds
00:10for wildfire relief efforts. But this isn't the first time Hollywood award shows have been delayed
00:15or almost delayed amid historical events. We're taking a look at the times major Hollywood award
00:20shows have been postponed throughout history. In 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was killed on
00:26April 4th, just days before the Oscars were set to take place on April 8th. Several big-name stars
00:32slated to appear at the ceremony, like Sidney Poitier, were also planning on attending King's
00:37funeral the next day on April 9th. So the Academy moved the ceremony to April 10th. The broadcast
00:43opened with a tribute to King from the Academy's then-president, Gregory Peck.
00:47It was his work and his dedication that brought about the increasing awareness of all men
00:55that we must unite. In 1981, President Ronald Reagan was shot and wounded in an assassination
01:02attempt the same day the Oscars were supposed to air. Producers opted to postpone the show by one day,
01:08with host Johnny Carson opening the ceremony like this.
01:11The Academy, ABC Television, and all of us connected with the show
01:15felt because of the uncertain outcome, as of this time yesterday, it would have been inappropriate
01:20to stage a celebration. In 2001, the Emmys were postponed following the September 11th terrorist
01:27attacks. The ceremony that was set to air that same month was then pushed to November. It's also
01:33worth noting that in 2003, the U.S. invaded Iraq just days before the Oscars. While producers debated
01:39postponing the show, they ultimately decided to proceed, but there was no red carpet. During the
01:45COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 Golden Globes were postponed and moved from early January to February
01:5128th, the date that had originally been set for that year's Oscars. The show saw nominees appear
01:56virtually. The 2021 Oscars were then delayed until April 25th and held at Union Station instead of the
02:02Dolby Theatre. And the 2021 Grammys were postponed and moved from January 31st to March 14th. The next year,
02:09the 2022 Grammys were postponed and moved from late January to early April due to a spike in COVID-19
02:15cases driven by the Omicron variant. And most recently, the 2023 Emmy Awards were delayed and
02:21moved from September of that year to early January 2024 due to the 2023 writers and actor strikes.
