05:23I know this land and I've been here many winters and I had never seen a winter like this before.
05:31İzlediğiniz için teşekkür ederim.
06:01I'm looking forward, you know, to work with metal.
06:05This is a new skill that I really want to try and to pursue, so I can make anything I want.
06:13So now I'm shoveling a big space here in order to build this forge, and I want it big.
06:22You know, it's always easier to build anything on spring, summer.
06:27But wintertime, you know, it's a lot of cabin, I've got a lot of time, so I'm going to use this time to build my forge.
06:38It's about five feet here.
06:41You could build a home in there.
06:43It's just crazy.
06:45All right.
06:50This looks pretty good to me.
06:53I'm ready to build a wall now.
06:58This middle shop will open so many new possibilities for me.
07:03A whole new level of self-reliance.
07:05If I want something, I have to make it myself.
07:10Well, this is all the wood I have had on my land.
07:18I need some more boards.
07:21I've got some old logs with no bark on it, so maybe I'm going to use it.
07:27These kind of logs, you know, it's back up logs.
07:34We never know when we're going to need it, so I'm glad I have it.
07:38Okay.
07:40me?
07:41Oh, .
07:42I had a bad feeling, you know?
07:48It's a bad feeling.
07:51Close to a foot short.
07:53I just miscalculated.
07:54Disappointed.
07:58I'll see what I've got.
08:01What do I have now?
08:03This one looks good.
08:08This one better work.
08:11Okay.
08:14Perfect.
08:15Yeah.
08:16It looks pretty good.
08:18Oof, that was close.
08:24That was the last one.
08:30Uh, hmm.
08:34F***.
08:37Whoa.
08:39It's only four walls, but it's like a puzzle, you know?
08:45This goes here.
08:50You've come here.
08:52Uh-huh.
08:56Okay.
08:57Trying to figure it out.
09:03You come here, big guy, because you have an angle for the room.
09:08Okay?
09:10All done.
09:11All done.
09:11All done.
09:13It's been a long day.
09:19Ha ha ha ha.
09:22Hully Lake is a very remote location.
09:35This is it.
09:37It's a place that means a lot to Gilbert.
09:40I grabbed the shovels.

09:44that's where he was raised.
09:47This is really home for Gilbert.
09:53Wow.
09:55He needs a lot of work.
09:57Evet.
09:58Hepsini take the snow off and see what we can do.

12:10İzlediğiniz için teşekkür ederim.
12:40Last spring, I had the great idea to try to build a bridge during the spring flood.
12:47It was just not possible.
12:48The water was getting so high so fast.
12:52It was a pretty big disaster.
12:54So I'm still wanting to finish that bridge project.
13:01Because there's some good moose country on the other side of the creek.
13:05I'm hoping I can go hunting there next fall.
13:10So if I can have a bridge, I'm able to cross back and forth.
13:14Especially if you go hunting and you have a big heavy backpack, it can be easier to cross.
13:19That's why I want to try again, but using the winter to be able to walk on the ice, it's gonna be easier to build the bridge.
13:31Alex is back.
13:32It's always nice to have another human around and have someone to talk to and more company than just the dogs.
13:40Another set of hands to help me with big projects like this one.
13:44I missed him.
13:45It's good to be back out here on the trapline and to see more go.
13:52I hope that working together we can get this done.
13:56We just have to be a little bit careful here working on the ice.
14:01There's still water running underneath here.
14:03You can hear it gurgling.
14:05Getting wet out here in the winter is always a danger.
14:10You can catch hypothermia quickly.
14:11Right now, I'm checking the ice to see if the spot is safe to build the bridge.
14:23The ice looks pretty thick, so I think we're safe and we can actually start building.
14:31That's the tree, what are you thinking?
14:33I think that's the best one.
14:35Let's do it.
14:35My biggest worries are that the tree is not going to be long enough or not thick enough when it falls on the other side.
14:48And also that the whole thing slides down the river and that we're not able to pull it back up.
14:54Come on, bye.
14:54We're putting a couple logs under the tree, just when we're going to cut it.
15:03We don't want it to slide down on the river.
15:05So hopefully those little logs just hold it in place here so we can have it stay on that bank.
15:12Okay.
15:12Every time we use chainsaw, you always have to think about safety, of course, but even more in the winter.
15:24Just recap, but it's going to come down quick.
15:27There is lots of snow and it's harder to move fast if the tree doesn't fall where you want it.
15:32It's going.
15:34Get out.
15:38Yahoo!
15:39It stayed on the bank on this side.
15:44Yeah, it held on here good.
15:45I think it still reaches on the beach.
15:50It should be kind of perfect.
15:58So we're going to build a pillar, like a little tower to put the bridge on.
16:03So the bridge will be hopefully higher than the water level.
16:09These are maybe 70 to 100 pounds, the heavier ones here.
16:14They'll make salt foundation for our pillar over there.
16:17It's okay.
16:19Moving logs, it's heavy enough, but moving logs through this deep snow, it's pretty demanding.
16:25That's the biggest part, building something in the winter is dealing with that snow.
16:33Even though it's hard work, I've got something to prove.
16:37I don't want to fail again.
16:42I really want this bridge to work, but I also want to beat that damn river.
16:46Well, the frame is done.
17:03Now I'm ready for the forge itself.
17:06It's an antique forge that I got.
17:08Right now, it's pretty far from the cabin, so I've got to get it.
17:13But this thing, well, it's so heavy.
17:17It's like at least 200 pounds, something like that.
17:19And I cannot carry it by myself.
17:22Not even on my back.
17:23It's just impossible.
17:24There is so much snow, and I don't have a sleigh.
17:27So I've got to find a way to do it.
17:29Oh, yeah.
17:38That's pretty big.
17:45I just saw my canoe, and I said, yeah, let's use a canoe.
17:49Pretty sure I can just put the forge on top, pull it.
17:56We don't say that every day, huh?
17:58Putting a forge in the canoe.
17:59This part is very, very fragile.
18:08Okay.
18:12Okay.
18:13Man, this is heavy.
18:16Come on, big guy.
18:19Away, away, away, away.
18:22The plywood is just bending so much.
18:26I broke it.
18:27Yeah, I broke it.
18:31Yeah, yeah, yeah.
18:34It's getting worse and worse, man.
18:36I need some straps, because right now, the canoe will just open up.
18:50Being on my land is never boring.
18:54Every day is different.
18:56There's always challenge.
18:57And I love challenge.
19:02This is part of the game, you know?
19:04It's part of the game.
19:06Okay.
19:08Okay, that's good.
19:10Let's see if it works.
19:20Yeah, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
19:23Back, back, back.
19:25Maybe it's better if I go on the back, man, if I'm down there.
19:39Pull and push.
19:40Yeah.
19:43No!
19:43No!
19:44No!
19:44No!
19:45No!
19:45No!
19:46No!
19:46No!

19:47No!
19:47No!
19:47No!
19:48No!
19:48No!
19:49No!
19:49No!
19:50No!
19:51No!
19:52No!
19:53No!
19:54No!
19:55No!
19:56No!
19:57No!
19:58No!
19:59No!
20:00No!
20:00Yeah.
20:03I'm not even halfway yet.
20:06It's so heavy, it's like, too much snow.
20:10Too much snow.
20:12So, oh, this is what I'm going to do, it's going to go faster.
20:16I'm just going to get my tools and rope.
20:23You know, there is a kind of a self-reliance that lifestyle demands.
20:30You always have to find new ideas.
20:33Okay.
20:34You have to figure it out.
20:36It's the only option.
20:40Yeah, it's working good.
20:42Ha, ha, ha, ha.
20:50Ha, ha, ha, ha.
20:52Woo-hoo!
20:54Ha, ha, ha, ha.
20:55Oh, man, that was an adventure.
20:57It's here, and I found another use for more canoe.
21:02I feel like I'm running to something more than I'm running from something.
21:12I can see what I want out here.
21:15For me, it's all about chasing freedom.
21:16Oh, my God.
21:17This is a feeling I wish everyone could experience.
21:21able to enjoy a whole other world.
21:42Happy boy! I'm a happy boy.
21:51I gotta try and find some firewood.
21:55I see loads of firewood right there.
21:57Lot's of good stuff.
21:58But not a good place for landing.
22:02Yeah, if I try and land here,
22:05you wouldn't be long getting yourself tore up in these rocks.
22:08These rocks and this ice.
22:10İlke alışveriş.
22:13İlke alışveriş.
22:15Bir şey yok.
22:29Bu arada, çok iyi.
22:33Burada.
22:35Güzel bir yer.
22:36İlke alışveriş.
22:38Oh my god, this is sheer.
22:41I need to get a billy goat in here and strub a chainsaw to him.
22:44I got to hurry up and do this because tide is on the way in.
22:47Before long this whole beach will be underwater.
22:50I want to get the wood, I got to get it now.
22:55This cliff right here is exactly why Newfoundland is nicknamed a rock.
22:59Because all it is is massive rock sitting out in the Atlantic Ocean.
23:03Oh.
23:05My god.
23:07This is it.
23:08I know a lot of these trees don't look like much to the untrained eye.
23:12These little things here, these are called stunned wood around here.
23:15It's not 100% dry, not 100% green.
23:18If you can get them burning, they burn hot.
23:20And around here, this is really the best you're going to do is this stuff.
23:23That one little tree right there, a few hours of burning just in that one.
23:28The nice part is the dory is just right there.
23:30So I can just cut all this down and then just throw it right over the cliff,
23:34right into the dory.
23:36Well, only one thing left to do now, boy.
23:39Let the big dog eat.
23:41When you're out in the bush, you really got to think a couple steps ahead.
23:46When you're out in the bush, you really got to think a couple steps ahead.
24:03It just makes you more prepared.
24:05It's always something that you need to keep in the back of your mind.
24:10And building an ice cabin is definitely thinking a couple steps ahead.
24:16Right now, the roof, it's looking like this in the center.
24:26So we want to try to push something underneath to bring it straight.
24:31That looks really good, Gilbert.
24:32That looks really solid.
24:33There's going to need a leverage.
24:34Okay.
24:35Yeah, yeah.
24:36That'll work really good.
24:37Yeah.
24:38Well, hopefully that will hold when we push it up.
24:40All right.
24:41You ready?
24:42One, two, three.
24:43It's moving up.
24:44Yeah, it's one up.
24:45Okay.
24:46So you want me to step on it?
24:47Yeah.
24:48All right.
24:49What do you want me to do?
24:50Just keep stepping around.
24:51I'm going to put it a little bit.
24:52Yeah.
24:53Yeah.
24:54Well, hopefully that will hold when we push it up.
24:56All right.
24:57You ready?
24:58One, two, three.
24:59It's moving up.
25:00Yeah.
25:01It's one up.
25:02Okay.
25:03So you want me to step on it?
25:04Yeah.
25:05All right.
25:06What do you want me to do?
25:07Just keep stepping around.
25:08I'm going to put in the shimmy under it.
25:10Oh, yeah.
25:11Got it.
25:12Working.
25:13I'm going to put another shimmy here.
25:16I think this little connection is going to be a little bit.
25:18Yeah.
25:19Yeah.
25:20Yeah.
25:21Yeah.
25:22Yeah.
25:23Yeah.
25:24Yeah.
25:25Yeah.
25:26Yeah.
25:27Yeah.
25:28Yeah.
25:29Yeah.
25:30Yeah.
25:31Yeah.
25:32Yeah.
25:33Yeah.
25:34Yeah.
25:35Yeah.
25:36Yeah.
25:37The contraption thing that we've got going on here is working so far.
25:42We're definitely able to bring it up a little bit more every time.
25:46Oh!
25:47I think we're just going to have to keep going inch by inch.
25:50Oh, yes.
25:51It's on there.
25:52Yeah.
25:53Oh, yeah.
25:54Good.
25:55It's supporting.
25:56We got it raised maybe a foot.
25:58We're bracing it now.
26:00That should be good enough.
26:05We're going to start harvesting some ice blocks and then we're going to start stacking up the ice shack.
26:10Last spring I went exploring on the other side of the river and I found really good moose country.
26:23But rivers can be dangerous especially in the spring when the water can be pretty strong.
26:40People can get swept away pretty easily.
26:46This bridge means a lot because I will have easy access to those hunting grounds.
26:52And hopefully it means more access to food.
26:55We want to build the pillar as high as the bank on the other side.
27:03So it's higher above the water level when the water is higher in the spring.
27:08It looks pretty sturdy.
27:17I think it's going to be strong enough to hold if there's a big flood during the spring.
27:22And now comes the biggest challenge, which is putting that tree on top of the pillar.
27:29It's a very heavy tree. It's hundreds of pounds.
27:35So we'll have to find a little system to bring it up.
27:39We want to make sure we don't pull that whole tree down the river while we're jacking it up.
27:44If that thing falls into the river on the other side, it would be game over for us.
27:50So Alex is securing the other end right now to make sure it stays in place.
27:55Hopefully it works.
28:04Ready?
28:05One, two, three.
28:07Okay.
28:08One, two, three.
28:11One, two, three.
28:13Okay.
28:17Wait.
28:20Step on it.
28:22I didn't.
28:23Okay.
28:24Okay.
28:25One, two, three.
28:26A little more.
28:29One, two, three.
28:32No.
28:33One, two.
28:35No.
28:36Can you hold or I will?
28:37No, can you hold?
28:38Can you?
28:39Can you hold?
28:40I'm going to try wrapping this thing right around me.
28:44Okay.
28:45One, two, three.
28:47One, two, three.
28:48This is really hanging up.
28:51Should I just cut this ****?
28:52Yep.
29:00No, you ****.
29:04Just cut it flat.
29:05Okay.
29:06You gotta walk.
29:07Okay.
29:08One.
29:09Two.
29:10Three.
29:11We're on.
29:12Okay.
29:13In place.
29:14In there?
29:15Yep.
29:16That's perfect.
29:17Okay.
29:18Good job.
29:19Having the tree up there now is the big part is done.
29:20I think it's high enough for the water in the spring.
29:21I think it's gonna be safe.
29:22but it's far from being done.
29:23We milled some boards back in the spring.
29:24I think it's gonna be safe.
29:26It's far from being done.
29:28Yeni yapacak bir şey.
29:31Yeni yemeğim.
29:32Umarım.
29:33Bir.
29:34Almanya therein.
29:35Yeni yapmak için bir şey işiniz.
29:39Bir.
29:41Orta üstürür.
29:45Bu da uzun gitmek üzere çünkü.
29:48Gerçekten bu, ama rahatla geçirmiş oluyor.
29:51İzlediğiniz için teşekkür ederim.
30:21İzlediğiniz için teşekkür ederim.
30:51So now, there is only one way to know if it works, to plug it in.
30:57It has to work, this guy, you know, after all that work, it needs to work.
31:02The power is coming from the solar panel system, so this is the moment of truth.
31:11Ha ha ha ha ha ha.
31:13Okay.
31:15It looks crooked a bit.
31:30It's not in line.
31:30The legs is crooked here.
31:36How come it's not working, maybe?
31:39Needs to be a little bit...
31:41Okay.
31:42One.
31:42And this is two.
31:49There we go.
31:50Woo!
31:51Okay.
31:52It's more in line.
32:02Let's do it again.
32:04Second try.
32:05Woo-hoo-hoo-hoo!
32:13Yeah!
32:14Yeah, that's great.
32:17Oh man, I feel the air.
32:19Ha ha ha ha!
32:20That just enough force to feed the fire to feed the fire to make it work.
32:26Hey man, now I just need to start a fire on it.
32:29This is old school.
32:40I like to bring back some tradition, and this is very old tradition here.
32:45I'm just looking for embers now.
32:48There are some colds here.
32:50Let's start the fan.
32:51Ha ha ha ha!
32:57Oh man, that's working a lot.
33:00Woo-hoo-hoo-hoo!
33:02Oh yeah!
33:04This is exactly what I want to see.
33:07The colds are so red now, that's crazy.
33:12It's working, and it's going to be very hot.
33:15I can't wait to put some metal into it.
33:20I feel great.
33:22This is just a big step for me.
33:24This is the forge I always wanted.
33:29I can work middle now.
33:30I can build anything here.
33:32A new world is opening to me.
33:34It's still nice, and I'm a little concerned it might not be thick enough for ice blocks, but hopefully it is, and we can continue harvesting ice.
33:58Where do you want it?
34:08Right here.
34:09Right here.
34:09Right here.
34:20That's a really nice piece.
34:22Yeah.
34:22Yeah, this is a really good spot.
34:25Yeah, that's where we're looking for.
34:26Good.
34:35Oh, .
34:36Slippery.
34:39So heavy.
34:41How much do you think these blocks weigh?
34:43Like 40 pounds?
34:44Yeah.
34:45All right, last one for now.
34:51Good.
34:54This is the first ice harvesting of the season, so it's okay if we don't get a lot of ice blocks.
35:01You're slippery.
35:02They're so slippery.
35:04But at least we're getting it started, and then throughout the season we'll continue to add more ice to the ice cabin.
35:10Now we know where to get the ice.
35:12Okay.
35:13All right.
35:13All right.
35:15Having an ice cabin is going to be really important for us in the summertime when we're here.
35:35That works pretty good.
35:36Because filling it up with ice is going to last all the way through probably September.
35:41Oh, my God.
35:42And then we'll be able to store some food in the summertime.
35:47Yeah!
35:48That works.
35:50Stack them up really nice.
35:55Yeah.
35:56That's the last one?
35:57Last one.
35:59Yeah.
36:00This will act as insulation, right?
36:06Yeah, it's insulation.
36:08Everything that we've used on this ice cabin is from repurposed material.
36:14Amazing how much we can get done with scrap and stuff we find.
36:20Good for now.
36:21Yeah.
36:22Yeah.
36:22It looks awesome.
36:25There you go.
36:26When we come back with more supplies, then we can really fix it up.
36:31Maybe eventually we could put a newer roof on.
36:33Yeah.
36:34It's not super pretty to look at, but it looks like it's going to do the job for now.
36:38We did.
36:39All right.
36:39Let's go get some coffee.
36:42Coffee time.
36:43Coffee time.
36:43Coffee time.
36:43Coffee time.
36:43Coffee time.
36:45Coffee time.
36:47Coffee time.
36:48Coffee time.
36:49Coffee time.
36:50Coffee time.
36:51Hey, come here.
36:58I'm excited to get this done.
37:01Oh, boy.
37:02Oh, you're so happy to go.
37:04We milled some boards back at camp for the bridge.
37:08But it's going to take forever if we have to walk back and forth with the planks.
37:12Line up.
37:13Line up.
37:14So if we can get it done in one shot with the dogs, then it will save us a lot of time.
37:19Everybody behave today, please.
37:31Coming down to the river, it's a very steep hill.
37:35And if the dogs panic, they might just top right away.
37:40Easy.
37:40Easy.
37:40I'm worried I'm going to hit them if I'm too fast.
37:44Easy.
37:46It's going to be intense.
37:48Watch out.
37:48They're coming hot.
37:52Yo, boys.
37:57Woo.
37:59We made it.
38:01Holy ****.
38:02You okay?
38:03That was fast.
38:04Come on, boys.
38:08The dogs did good.
38:09Good job, boys.
38:11They didn't stop and I didn't smack into them.
38:14Come on, boys.
38:15Good, boys.
38:16It's a good adrenaline shot and it was fun.
38:19Good, boys.
38:21Good boy, Eichor.
38:24Well, now we got the boards here.
38:26Saved us a lot of carrying.
38:29Hope that'll be enough.
38:30We're flat on the top here, so it's a little more stable for the board to go on.
38:46We're using the logs, so it's a little wider to walk on, especially if we have big backpacks if we go hunting.
38:53You get to put the last board in.
39:07I think it's pretty good for a bush bridge.
39:10You're going to go try it out?
39:11Yep.
39:12You think it's wide enough to go across with a heavy pack?
39:23Kind of bouncy, but it's wide enough.
39:29A little bush engineering and made it work.
39:34It was a pretty hard job, but it's done.
39:36It's not a fancy bridge, but it beats swimming through that raging river anyways.
39:42I know a lot of people like to romanticize this type of life, but at the end of the day, it's hard work.
40:01It's a constant battle.
40:05No one's here to save you.
40:07It's either you do it or you deal with consequences.
40:10That's the worst of it.
40:15You definitely got a good boatload of wood there.
40:17All I got to do is load her up, back to the kitchen, drink cup tea in no time.
40:22Oh, Lord, that is some view.
40:26Look at this.
40:27It's amazing this is my backyard.
40:29It's absolutely amazing.
40:33It's hard work.
40:34It's a hard country out here.
40:36When I look at over views like this, it really makes it worth it.
40:40Same rocks, the same cliffs they were looking at 1,000 years ago.
40:45It's very humbling.
40:55Good load of wood, that's for sure.
40:56The boat's not that big, so I want to cut this wood to fit kind of perfectly into the boat so I can get as much as I can home in one load.
41:08Old timers say, firewood heats you up three times.
41:20Once cutting it, once getting it to the wood stove, and once when she goes in the wood stove.
41:24This is number two for me.
41:31Loading up on a rising tide like this, you're constantly trying to keep the boat drying out.
41:36Work I'm leaving you.
41:37It's nothing like a thing worse than standing on the beach and watching your boat drift away.
41:48You know, the only option to get that boat back would be to strip down and pray that you can swim fast.
41:54Especially out here in the wintertime.
41:57That's it.
41:58She's maxed.
41:59Well, now all I gotta do is get her home.
42:09She definitely feels heavier than when she had rocks, that's for sure.
42:13Come on, old girl.
42:15You might be cursed, but you ain't gonna sink today.
42:18And on my watch.
42:26The old cursed boat did pretty good.
42:28That was her first real job.
42:30She did great.
42:32And we got a nice load of wood out of it.
42:34Now let's get all this up to the wood stove and sit back and enjoy it.
42:40Not gonna freeze to death tonight.
42:45Coming in with a nice iron load of dry wood for a fire and have a Ronnie there waiting for me.
42:50Nice little warm house up on the hill.
42:54I feel like a king coming home to my castle.
42:58I feel like I'm not going to.
42:59All right.
42:59Dance thing.
43:01I see you guys.
43:02See you guys.
43:02I feel like a king coming home.
43:03I feel like a king coming to.
43:04I feel like I'm not gonna throw but you.
43:05I will be like the woods okay in the truck.
43:11Yep.
43:12I wasn't gonna end here.
43:12He looks like me when I'm looking at these victories.
43:13Every year.
43:14They were like a king coming home.
43:15Alright.
43:17I'm good.
43:18And I'm like believing that I'm going to ask you.
43:19I see you guys are all talking about that.
43:20Bye 17th and I'm meio.
43:21seeing you guys come out.
43:22New year.
43:23What are you guys me?
43:24My name is Hilo company with my petrique.
