00:00Tuesday night's Democratic presidential debate hosted by CNN and The New York Times
00:04ended with a question that drew backlash from Democratic candidates and viewers alike.
00:09After a rousing debate about policy and passion, moderator Anderson Cooper asked his final question,
00:15which was about Ellen DeGeneres' unlikely friendship with former President George W. Bush
00:20that recently ignited his social media firestorm given his administration's opposition to same-sex
00:25marriages and LGBTQ rights, among other issues.
00:28Last week, Ellen DeGeneres was criticized after she and former President George W. Bush
00:33were seen laughing together at a football game. Ellen defended their friendship, saying,
00:37we're all different and I think that we've forgotten that that's okay that we're all different.
00:42Cooper continued,
00:43so in that spirit, we'd like you to tell us about a friendship that you've had that would surprise us
00:47and what impact it's had on you and your beliefs.
00:50Two candidates, Senator Amy Klobuchar and former Vice President Joe Biden,
00:54named the late Republican Senator John McCain, while others also mentioned GOP colleagues.
00:59But later, several of the Democratic candidates shared their disappointment in Cooper's question via social media.
01:04Julian Castro tweeted,
01:06Three hours and no questions tonight about climate, housing or immigration?
01:10Climate change is an existential threat.
01:13America has a housing crisis.
01:14Children are still in cages at our border.
01:16But you know, Ellen.
01:18Hashtag Democratic debate.
01:19Kamala Harris seemed to agree, tweeting,
01:21Three hours, not one question about the climate crisis, not one question about LGBTQ plus rights,
01:28not one question about immigration.
01:30These issues are too important to ignore.

01:33Viewers, including The Daily Show's Trevor Noah, were similarly upset.
01:37When you're eight hours into a Dem debate and Anderson Cooper asked a question about Ellen,
01:41and mocked Cooper in a follow-up post,
01:43Anderson Cooper,
01:44Irreversible climate change is going to doom all mankind to a painful heat death if we don't act soon.
01:50So obviously I've got to ask,
01:51Who's your shittiest friend and why?
01:53Poe's co-creator and director Steven Kanals wrote,
01:56Wait, did they really just ask an Ellen question?
01:59I can't.
02:00I'm out.
