While making a guest appearance on 'Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen,' the late night host explained why he felt his heartfelt interview resonated with so many: "I was very grateful to have that conversation."
00:00It's just that we did it publicly, which very few people do, because it's a subject that I think a lot of people avoid.
00:05Stephen Colbert is reflecting on his emotional interview with Anderson Cooper one year later while making a guest appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.
00:13During a CNN interview with Colbert last year, Cooper opened up about the recent loss of his mother and discussed the letter that Colbert sent him after her death, saying in it, Colbert had written,
00:23I hope you find peace in your grief. This led to an emotional discussion on grief and where Colbert opened up about his faith, something he said he learned to lean on after losing his father and two brothers to a plane crash when he was just 10 years old.
00:36Now, speaking to Andy Cohen about that emotional interview, which turned out to be a viral moment, Colbert says he's grateful to have had that conversation with Cooper.
00:44The things that he was asking me about are common to all of our experiences.
00:50Colbert explained that it was important to have an open discussion about grief because it's a topic that many don't want to talk about.
00:56Because there's something about grief that we feel is contagious.
00:59He further explained that he finds many tend to socially distance the knowledge that grief is, quote,
01:04waiting for everyone to experience in a natural and normal and human way.
01:08He added, the elephant in the room is that while love lasts forever, our relationship or our present physical relationship with those we love most doesn't.
01:15We just don't want to talk about it to invite that particular anxiety or demon into the room.
01:20Anderson and I just talked about it frankly and from our hearts might have been unusual, but not unique.
01:30Colbert further added that their shared experience of grief was something that was nourishing to a lot of different people.
