Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva delivered a sharp message to global partners, declaring that Brazil “will not be a mere exporter of critical minerals” and must move toward deeper industrial partnerships, especially with the Global South. Speaking at a major economic forum, Lula said Brazil’s vast mineral wealth should fuel domestic manufacturing, technological development, and long-term value creation—rather than simply supplying raw materials to wealthier nations.

Lula argued that the current global economic structure leaves developing nations dependent on commodity exports while wealthier countries reap the benefits of advanced industry. He called for a “fairer global supply chain” and urged countries across Latin America, Africa, and Asia to collaborate on joint manufacturing, clean-tech investment, and new trade models that reduce vulnerability to external shocks.

The Brazilian leader emphasised renewable energy, battery production, and green industrial projects as key sectors for future cooperation, adding that Brazil’s role in the energy transition should include innovation, not just extraction. Lula also framed the shift as vital for Brazil’s economic resilience and a rebalancing of trade relationships long dominated by the Global North.

00:00Thank you very much, Mr. President of the Republic of Moçambique, Daniel Francisco Chapo, for your...
00:07Like in the South America, the African continent has important reserves of critical minerals, like lítio and cobalt,
00:15which will be a strategic role in the green tradition.
00:20The international cooperation in this matter is fundamental.
00:23I want to say that the Brazil is willing to collaborate with you and we have to take a decision.
00:29We are not going to be exportators of critical minerals.
00:34If you want, you will have to industrialize our country
00:38so that our country can earn this money.
00:42It's also urgent that every country can be able to define the needs and models
00:49of exploration of its rich minerals in a sovereign way.
00:53We already have a decade of experience.
00:57We have a decade and we don't have to believe anymore.
01:01Or we take advantage of these rich rich people that God gave us
01:06and make it a rich rich for our people,
01:09or we will see the countries of always
01:11cave in a hole in our country,
01:13take our minerals, and we will be hungry.
01:16And we are hungry and the world.
01:18We have to say that one,
01:19we have to be confused as a list of people
01:21you know that you've heard of.
01:23We have to say that people will produce fuel and waste money.
01:25That's nonsense.
01:27This is nonsense.
01:29It's not nonsense.
01:30You know what I've said?
02:32e a China ocupou o espaço.
02:57para enfrentar medidas unilaterais e pressões injustas e ilegais.
03:02Queremos diversificar exportações, gerar emprego e integrar nossas cadeias produtivas
03:26e quer voltar a investir nesse país.
