00:06Pacific Rim Uprising leads a pack of new movies at the box office this weekend and should
00:10finally be the challenger to dethrone the king of Wakanda, aka the history-making
00:15Black Panther. The legendary Universal sequel is tracking to open to a modest $25 million
00:20or less in North America, but should have more success overseas, where the big budget
00:24offering is expected to cross $100 million in its international debut. The first Pacific
00:29Rim, directed by Guillermo del Toro, earned a sizable $309.2 million overseas in 2013,
00:34including $111.9 million in China. Domestically, it topped out at $101.8 million
00:40after debuting to $37.3 million. This time out, the $150 million film sees the human-piloted
00:46mega-robot square off against otherworldly monsters of mass destruction. Star Wars
00:50standout John Boyega leads the cast, with Steven S. DeKnight making his feature
00:54directorial debut. Meanwhile, on its six-weekend, Black Panther is expected to earn
00:58between $17 million and $18 million as it passes the $623 million made by fellow Marvel
01:03film The Avengers to become the top-grossing superhero film of all time in North America,
01:08unadjusted for inflation. Elsewhere at the crowded box office, MGM and Paramount's new
01:12animated family film, Sherlock Gnomes, has a shot at battling Black Panther for second
01:17place if it comes in on the high end of expectations. Paramount is predicting a debut in
01:22the low to mid-teens, but some tracking services show it coming in higher. A sequel to 2011's
01:27Gnomeo and Juliet, Sherlock Gnomes features the voices of returning cast members James McAvoy,
01:32Emily Blunt, Michael Caine, Maggie Smith, Stephen Merchant and Ozzy Osbourne. Plus,
01:37Johnny Depp as Sherlock Gnomes, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Watson and Mary J. Blythe as Irene.
01:42Steven Soderbergh is back with Unsane, a psychological horror thriller shot with an iPhone 7 and reportedly
01:48costing $1.5 million to make. Tracking services project a debut of $3 to $6 million for the film,
01:54which stars Claire Foy as a troubled businesswoman who lands in a mental institution after she's
01:59stalked by her former boyfriend. Also opening this weekend is Paul, Apostle of Cries from
02:04Sony's faith-based label Affirm. Box office observers are projecting an opening of $3 to $5 million,
02:09although last weekend, faith-based title I Can Only Imagine zoomed to a $17.1 million debut after
02:15also being expected to open to no more than $5 million.
02:19Midnight Sun, the fifth new movie opening nationwide, is tracking to open in roughly the
02:24same range as Unsane and Paul Apostle. And at the specialty box office, Wes Anderson's
02:28Isle of Dogs will debut in 27 theaters in select markets across the country.
02:33Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum and Greta Gerwig are among the
02:37voice cast of Anderson's stop-motion animated adventure about a boy and his faithful pet
02:42out to stop a canine genocide. So with so many choices this weekend, which movie will
02:47you be catching in theaters? Do you think Pacific Rim Uprising will take the top spot
02:51from Black Panther or do you think Wakanda will reign supreme another week? Let us know
02:56in the comments. For The Hollywood Reporter News, I'm Lyndsey Rodrigues.
