'Black Panther' is going where no comic book movie has gone before, with the Marvel Studios film earning a best picture Oscar nomination Tuesday morning.

00:00Black Panther just made history again. In addition to being the third highest

00:07grossing film in North American history, the Ryan Coogler-directed superhero flick,

00:11which earned $1.3 billion worldwide, became the first comic book movie to earn a

00:17Best Picture Oscar nomination on Tuesday. The film, which stars Chadwick Boseman,

00:21Michael B. Jordan, Letitia Wright, Danai Gurira and Lupita Nyong'o, has been praised

00:26for being an important cultural moment thanks to its primarily Black cast and themes of

00:31Afrofuturism and identity. The film also earned Oscar nominations for Best Costume Design,

00:36Production Design, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Original Score and Original Song.

00:42Hannah Beachler became the first African American nominated for an Oscar in production

00:46for her work on the film. Beachler created the fictional world of Wakanda, which involved

00:50extensive research in South Africa. Traditionally, comic book films have done well at the box

00:56office but have been overlooked by the Oscars in the Best Picture category. Until now.

01:00No doubt ABC, who broadcasts the annual awards show, will be hoping that Panthers' Best Picture

01:05nomination will attract viewers to the telecast, which this year will have no host, and which

01:10saw an all-time low in viewership last year.

01:12While comic book pictures may not have fared too well when it comes to Best Picture

01:16nominations, fantasy films had occasionally done a little better, with Guillermo del Toro's

01:21The Shape of Water winning in 2017 and Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings, The Return of the King,

01:26taking home the gold in 2003. The Oscars will air on ABC on February 24th.
