In the surprise box office battle between 'Mortal Kombat' and the anime film 'Demon Slayer the movie: Mugen Train,' Warner Bros.' video game-inspired film emerged victorious over the weekend.

00:15Warner Bros. video game inspired film emerged victorious over the weekend.
00:19Mortal Kombat topped the North American box office chart with $22.5 million from 3,073 locations,
00:26while Demon Slayer followed with an estimated $19.5 million from 1,605 theaters.
00:31That's by far the biggest domestic debut of all time for a foreign language film.
00:41As Hollywood and theaters struggled to emerge from the pandemic,
00:44the strong opening of both movies was more good news following the huge box office showing of Godzilla vs Kong,
00:50which roared past the $400 million mark over the weekend.

01:03Like Godzilla vs Kong and all other 2021 Warner Bros. titles,
01:06Mortal Kombat debuted simultaneously on HBO Max.
01:10As for Demon Slayer, the film, which was released in Japan late last year,
01:13is the top grossing movie of all time in that country at more than $361 million.
01:19It's also the biggest anime ever.
01:21Through Sunday, the movie is earned well north of $400 million.
