03:41Seated within this alpine terrain,
03:44it's a former 16th century mining town
03:47and now a popular weekend getaway from the capital.
03:51To reach this third checkpoint,
03:53teams will continue their journey through El Salvador,
03:56known as the land of volcanoes,
03:58with over 20 forming the country's spine.
04:01Having suffered a devastating 12-year civil war,
04:04followed by a rise in gang violence,
04:06a recent government crackdown means El Salvador has become safer for tourists,
04:11though travel after dark is still widely discouraged and rarely exists.

07:37can cover good distance by boat, they must surrender themselves to the timing of the
07:41tide.
07:42Alternatively, they could enter Honduras via the main land border crossing, El Amatillo,
07:48a spot that is well connected but often congested.
07:52Since we've been in El Zonte, it's obvious that, you know, there's a lot more tourists,
07:56a lot more people that speak English.

14:03or something like that i just feel like life is so short and i want to know that i've really enjoyed
14:09it and i do try to actively be happy i do get jealous of that you know you feel it's a choice
14:18that you feel happy because i always think like you were born with like a happy level that's here
14:25and my ceiling was like here you know even with my tablets i can't fully get there do you know what i
14:33mean i've been on antidepressants for for uh over 15 years for me they help definitely you know for
14:43some people it's therapy for some people it's just going down to the pub and having a pint with their
14:48mates like that can be their thing it's not one shoe fits all i've been through some horrible times but
14:55i've made the decision now to to come off them um because i feel like i'm in a good place in life
15:02now that i'm at a point where i've stopped taking the antidepressants it's trying to discover
15:09what my actual emotions are and don't get me wrong they really helped me through a really bad
15:14part of my life yeah but i've not known since i was 15 who i am do you know what i mean like what what
15:21makes me sad or what makes me emotional or what makes me happy yeah but i i'm finding it hard i'm
15:31discovering like panic attacks again or like anxiety attacks like doing something like this for me is
15:38such a test of how i'm gonna react emotionally prior to this trip i guess i just thought
15:48you were just a bit of a worrier for the sake of worrying i know i know and i know it's only been
15:58a couple of weeks but i do feel like i'm really getting to understand you better i do massively

21:58formed by two stratovolcanoes the summit soars to over 1200 meters offering unparalleled views of
22:06the bay of fonseca on the pacific ocean this doesn't look real it doesn't it looks like a painting it's
22:12one of those moments when you're like am i actually here surrounded by a coastal forest
22:18home to numerous exotic avian species including el salvador's national bird the mot mot
22:27what a place to say you did your first camping experience there's a door here but how do you
22:32get into the door there's a zip here i want some planks at the moment i think i need a mattress
22:37but i'll tell you something a view from here is amazing
22:45and i hope it doesn't take off oh my god you look like a boy scout dad oh yes with a boggle

24:08i was just made to believe that i could achieve anything but also there is this huge expectation
24:12that if you're going to do something you better do it to the best of your ability there was a lot
24:17of expectation to not let everyone down and i guess everything about me is about showing that actually
24:24i am fully capable but yeah that gets exhausting i feel like i'm in a race with myself yeah just a
24:32constant race what's the end goal exactly and i feel like i've never really known what the end
24:38goal is other than just keep going and i think there's more to me than just someone who wants to
24:42achieve maybe be more compassionate towards myself and that's it we know how hard you work to get to
24:48where you're yeah and we're proud of that thanks dad nice chat yeah well i know we haven't chat like

25:18outside the capital at lake ilopango this is unreal i've never seen anything like it
25:25a vast volcanic caldera with a depth of more than 230 meters i just can't get over the fact this is in
25:36the middle of a volcano it was formed over 1500 years ago by the tierra blanca hoven eruption which
25:43blanketed the whole of central america in ash are you feeling better after yesterday yes i feel like
25:49this is the bit of peace we needed with their strength returning buenos dias they spot a chance
25:55to ease their money worries these boats need cleaning right yeah do we put our flip-flops on yeah that
26:02makes sense i reckon we do all high surfaces first and then we'll do the floor after yeah sounds like
26:09we're in our kitchen mules i can't lie i think you've absolutely smashed this choosing to come here and
26:17we're not really feeling 100 percent it's the best thing that we could have done i know today didn't
26:23see like a big decision but it's just like i don't want to ever be the reason we're not progressing or

26:34world's not ending yeah i know even earlier when we were bartering for that taxi the knock-on that
26:43scares me it's like we could have had five more dollars for our budget that now we don't have
26:49and then i think oh no does that mean we won't eat as well today or or will we not be able to get
26:54anywhere else today you know it's just my i just spiral yeah i don't want to let anyone down you could
27:01never let me down i guess making the wrong decision in a place that's so public is really exaggerated like
27:08it's blown up yeah i know that this industry is so like cutthroat and so if i make the wrong decision
27:17you can lose it all in a heartbeat and i feel like that definitely plays on my mind all the time
27:24i always feel a little bit like you know an imposter and i don't know i just feel like
27:30like is it all down to luck and actually i don't think so i don't think so i think like you decided
27:37to carry on pursuing a career and doing the things that you want to do you decided to go for an
27:42audition and start acting i think my fear comes from the fact that i've been handed such an amazing card
27:50to be able to like live a dream career from so young that you feel like
27:55surely this is gonna run out soon this luck
28:04also though think about how many good decisions you've made in your lifetime compared to the bad
28:09decision true you completely like the balancing scales are outweighed entirely you've made some
28:14wicked decisions since we've been out i'm proud of you thank you what's great about the race is that
28:21you can see when a decision pays off and when it doesn't and i think that's quite reassuring i feel
28:26like i'm growing with the race look at that that is cleanest boat in the whole of el salvador
28:41just woke up from being half asleep and thought are we going all the way to la union for a boat and we
28:47don't even know the boat timetables having traveled for over eight hours across the country roman and
28:53harley moon are approaching the transport hub of san miguel where the road forks south to the port of la
28:59union the ferry departure point for honduras or north to el amatillo the main land border crossing
29:06so i'm then wondering if we get out of san miguel and head to el amatillo and to try and cross the
29:12border today is this san miguel yeah i think we should do it okay jump out yeah
29:21in the midst of anxiety we have jumped off the bus roman was feeling like we should get off and we can
