00:00This program is rated G and considered acceptable for all ages.
00:23Hey, I'm Hal Schaefer, long-time host of Drop Zone TV on the Outdoor Channel.
00:28But now, we are also doing a show called Renovation Hunters.
00:33The outdoors have been so good to me, I wanted to do something to give back to the outdoors.
00:38This is a chance to renovate places that gets families outdoors for generations to come.
00:44It is season three.
00:46And if you're new to this show, I want to introduce you to the most amazing renovating crew on the face of this earth.
01:28Renovation Hunters is presented by Baird Brothers Fine Artwoods.
01:33Give it time, it will change.
01:35Kevin, why don't we go over the list, just let them know what they're going to be doing today.
01:39All right, you all got the schedule I sent out.
01:41So it's minimal demo.
01:43We can get in there, get started.
01:45Carpets, all that stuff has to come out, cleaned up.
01:48I want to get paint on the walls today.
01:50My role on Renovation Hunters is project manager, designer, and troubleshooter.
01:57When I'm not on set here, I'm usually doing Tarkovic construction.
02:01We're doing high-end residential, new construction, remodels, and some commercial.
02:05A variety of things, but every one of those features is critical because we never know what we're going to get into here.
02:13We've been doing it for well over 40 years and look forward to continuing it on.
02:17Looks like you've got a little work to do there, buddy.
02:23I have to be able to look at a property when Hal and I come out to assess it to see if there's an eight-day build possible that we can turn around something for this family and also in the wheelhouse of our crew.
02:36Now, our crew has a huge assortment of talented artists, contractors, and just some good people with a heart of gold that drives them through these eight days, and that's what it takes.
02:50Wow.
02:51A little bit of a change?
02:52Oh, my gosh.
02:53They have been knocking it out of the park, man.
02:55Crew's been after it?
02:56Been after it.
02:56Inside, outside, all around.
02:59Without their dedication, we wouldn't even get close to this in eight days.
03:04My name is Alex Rowe, and I am with my own company, A-Rowe Taxidermy and A-Rowe Construction, back home in Indiana.
03:15As I've grown up, I've had my hands in the outdoors and also in the renovation process.
03:22Kevin Tarkovic, my stepfather, invited me out here to join the Renovation Hunter team crew.
03:27In our shop back home in Indiana with the taxidermy, we do stuff all over the country.
03:31Saltwater, freshwater fish.
03:33We do large mammals, everything from squirrel to zebra.
03:37I didn't really think about it until we got here on the show.
03:39A lot of these cabins have heirloom or sentimental mounts, and it's nice.
03:45I can come.
03:46I can bring my airbrush equipment.
03:47I can touch them up, give these animals a little bit more life, freshen them up as well
03:51as freshen up their home.
03:52This is awesome.
03:57Wow.
03:57This is amazing.
03:59This is amazing.
03:59Holy smokes.
04:01Holy smokes, look at that window.
04:03You didn't see that.
04:05You didn't see that.
04:08That many people to help us who they've never met, it's incredibly humbling.
04:19It's pretty special.
04:24This is how we did it.
04:26This is it right here.
04:27This is it.
04:27Right here.
04:27This is your crew.
04:28Go meet your crew.
04:29Absolutely.
04:30Camper.
04:31Camper, Steven.
04:31Mike.
04:32Mike.
04:32Hey, Ro.
04:33Hey, Ro.
04:33Thank you all so much.
04:34I enjoy being a part of it.
04:35It's amazing what we do.
04:37It's not just a renovation.
04:38It's a family.
04:39This is our mission.
04:40Our mission is to create legacies that last a long time, that pass on to generations to
04:46come, so they get to enjoy what we get to enjoy right now.
04:49Absolutely.
04:49Because if we quit using our natural resources, they will go away.
04:52So we're actually pretty close to finish here.
05:11We've got one more gun cabinet to go.
05:13Alex came over today, was an apprentice, so he's now a carpenter at this point.
05:17You can build anything you want in your house.
05:18So A-Ro taxidermy and A-Ro carpentry, too.
05:22He's going to keep me around, I think.
05:24I am from Richmond, Virginia, and I run the Woodshop Lazy Guy DIY.
05:29I am also the head of Stone Coat Countertops.
05:32I also do the social media for wall control, mullet tools, hangtime store.
05:37And I do a whole bunch of other things like wrinkle kids at home as well.
05:41What we're doing here is applying a little Stone Coat cabinet furniture paint.
05:44We actually put a bonding primer on first, and this is our paint color.
05:47This is Midnight Cypress.
05:49So the whole thing is designed to basically bond the kitchen cabinets, be nice and durable,
05:53and it's going to last forever.
05:55It's bulletproof.
05:56You get a nice, solid coat with the paint color.
05:58You don't have to go back.
05:59Just one coat, and you're good to go.
06:00It's a brand-new product for Stone Coat, and it comes in six colors.
06:04Yeah, see, that's the other thing that I got.
06:07Six and a quarter here.
06:09Rob Ryan from Ginger Woodworks.
06:11For the last 24 years, I've been a social worker in western New York,
06:15working with kids in foster care, as well as families dealing with trauma and mental health,
06:20as well as running my own small business, Ginger Woodworks.
06:23I've done everything from building tables, outdoor playhouses, pool decks, regular decks,
06:30furniture, desks, you name it.
06:32It's been three seasons of changing families, getting them outdoors,
06:38and having a lot of fun with the crew doing so.
06:41So my most memorable moment of season three was easily when Adam and I went
06:46and came up with an idea to bring some of that sheet metal back from the barn.
06:52We took that little four-wheeler dirt bike thing.
06:54Hey, boss.
06:58You got to zip around on it a little bit,
07:00and then the fun part was telling the kids who owned it how ridiculous it was.
07:04He'll break his leg.
07:07My name's Trent Schaefer.
07:10No, I'm just kidding.
07:11My name's Trent Sexton, and I'm from McConnell, South Carolina.
07:16And I run a plumbing company full-time.
07:20I build a few houses here and there.
07:21I do mostly new construction and plumbing.
07:25Kevin wants me here because he hates plumbing, and I'm good at what I do.
07:31How's it going, bud?
07:32It's a rough one.
07:33Just so you know, you can milk this plumbing job for as long as you want.
07:37You still got that checklist of carpentry stuff,
07:39so it might be 8 or 9 o'clock tonight when you get out of here or later.
07:43Now I'll finish it up.
07:44Milking's for farmers, and you ain't no farmer, brother.
07:47Let's go.
07:49It's just a fun thing to be around,
07:50and then at the end of the day, it always makes you feel good to make people happy.
07:55I'm just here to help and be a part of my soon-to-be father-in-law's show.
08:00We're in McCool, Mississippi.
08:08We actually got an invite to come back, do a hunt here,
08:12and get to revisit and see how the family's enjoying it.
08:15Got up, ate breakfast, had homemade biscuits.
08:18I'm telling you, I get spoiled on this kind of hunt quick.
08:21So we're doing a good, old-fashioned, deep south hunt for deer this morning,
08:27and we're going to use dogs.
08:29It's something I cut my teeth on.
08:30That's how I learned deer hunting down in Low Country, South Carolina.
08:35I'm ready.
08:36I'm ready.
08:37This is just the roots of the south of deer hunting.
08:45Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
08:48Let's go.
08:49I love watching them dogs work.
08:55Already on it.
08:56Oh, yeah, here we go.
09:23That was a good plan while we go today, what, the 19?
09:29Yeah.
09:31Man, Drew Breland, Tyler Hardy, old Breland family, you know,
09:36we come out here and renovated their place, and they were so gracious.
09:39They invited us back out, and, man, we just have had a blast.
09:43And truly, that's what it's all about.
09:46Renovation hunters, well, it's about making sure that people have places to go to
09:50and enjoy the outdoors with their family for generations to come.
09:55And, man, you couldn't pick a better family than the one we did right here in McCool, Mississippi.
09:59So, sweet potato.
10:02Potato.
10:02Potato.
10:03More grass.
10:05Green beans.
10:06Green beans.
10:07Hey, that might make me start on this page.
10:09By the way, I got my dates all wrong.
10:11I got to swear it in January.
10:13But this is Thanksgiving.
10:14Put some wood under this plate, because it ain't going to hold all this.
10:17Mississippi is the hospitality state.
10:23That's what they're saying.
10:24These people live it to the T.
10:28Grandpa's going to get that shot there.
10:30They are.
10:35We went through a lot of vetting processes with renovation hunters
10:39before we chose this family to come renovate this camp.
10:41And this family, when you're around it, you feel the tradition, the love they have for each other,
10:50how much they care about what they do, but the passion that goes into it.
10:54And the fact that they want their kids, I mean, they're here all the time.
10:58All the time.
10:59All the time.
11:00So they make their kids a priority.
11:02It's not about killing deer.
11:04Nah.
11:04It's about everybody being together, having a good time.
11:07Yeah, we love killing deer.
11:08Everybody does.
11:09Oh, absolutely.
11:10And when these babies get in college, they're going to bring their buddies back in.
11:12We're going to teach them all about it, too.
11:14Well, yeah, that's the thing.
11:15Miss Stephanie.
11:32Good morning.
11:34So what you got left?
11:36What you doing when you're done?
11:37I've got the back bedroom already cut.
11:39I'm cutting the front bedroom right now, and then I'll have it painted.
11:46And as soon as they're done with the floors, I can pop it in and finish off both bedrooms.
11:49I like it.
11:50Hey, she's the only person that's got a list in front of her.
11:52You've had your head down, I mean, elbows up the whole time.
11:56She has taken care of both those bedrooms so far and been bounced around while everybody else is in her way.
12:04Oh.
12:06Knocking it out.
12:07My name is Stephanie, and when I'm not renovating cabins on Renovation Hunters, I'm currently renovating my own 1960s bungalow, and I work full-time in metal manufacturing with wall control.
12:23My boss is here, and he brought the new workbench.
12:27We haven't even launched it yet.
12:28It's just now launching, and it's so awesome.
12:32I got to help prototype some of it, but this thing is going to be great.
12:35They're going to be able to have storage and workspace and move it around their basement for whatever they need to do.
12:41They're going to love it.
12:44I used to renovate houses with Habitat for Humanity and my dad as a kid, and now I create fine art and one-of-a-kind pieces for clients.
12:54And I also make a lot of stuff for myself, everything from cosplay to leatherworking to home renovation and custom furniture under the brand Uncommon Outpost, which I share on social media.
13:07I do a lot of different things, so it's kind of hard to keep track of, but that's why I like these builds so much, because there's so many different things for every build.
13:16After meeting the family and seeing them all, like, how they get along with each other, I really wanted to do something special for the kids.
13:28So I built this little sneaky mouse door, and I hide something in there.
13:35Hopefully it'll be a fun little addition, and maybe one of the kids will spot it when they're going through the house.
13:39My favorite moment from season three is in McCool, Mississippi, and we went to meet the family and some of the folks that used the hunting cabin that we were renovating.
13:51And this little girl comes up to me, and she was like, you're my favorite. I want to be like you when I grow up.
13:58And I thought that was the sweetest thing.
14:00We got to hang out for a little while at the party, and then at the big reveal, she's the one who found the secret mouse door that I built for the kids.
14:12And then she took me for a ride on her tiny little four-wheeler.
14:15So I made a new friend named Easley, and then I mailed her a little hammer so that she can get started on her own renovations.
14:23And then she'll probably be with us in, like, season 10, I bet.
14:27What's this cooking?
14:32Our buddy, Gary Cora.
14:36Got a little crisp to it on the outside.
14:40Yeah.
14:41Good flavor on the inside.
14:43Cooked this on the M&M grill out there, but it's the Santa Maria type, which is more of a steak griller.
14:50But I like what he did.
14:52Put a rib wrap on there.
14:53Kept this temperature way down, and basically just let it smoke and kept turning them all day long.
15:00Derek?
15:01Yes, sir?
15:01Nicely done, buddy.
15:02Thank you, sir.
15:02I appreciate that.
15:04He might be a reluctant outdoorsman, but you're a pretty good cook.
15:08You make somebody a great wife.
15:11Our buddy, Derek, from the Outdoor Channel, he is the fall guy of fun.
15:16There was an incident with some fireworks representing a possible electrical short.
15:23Yeah, put that one in.
15:24Be careful, because that one...
15:26Mother!
15:29We want to pull a break.
15:37It's going to be on Derek, but you couldn't do it to a better person.
15:40His reaction is priceless.
15:42I am glad that I got to test drive one of these before he discovered Mr. Black Snake that's been hanging out on the limb above me for the last couple hours.
15:56Because when he sees that, he could roll right over the old 500-pound M&M grill and sheer panty.
16:02Okay, you probably don't know who I am, but my name is Derek Gore, and I am the coordinating producer for...
16:12That is why you wanted this!
16:18Excuse me!
16:20Markers!
16:32Final day, Mike.
16:40Final day, we're here.
16:45A lot to do, I'm not even going to lie.
16:48But we're going to do what we can do, and hopefully it gets done.
16:54That's all I can say about that.
16:55Good morning.
16:58We will be done.
17:00One way or another.
17:01My name's Mike.
17:03Hi, I'm Camper.
17:04One of the owners of On The Spot Outdoors.
17:06We provide anything and everything that you could possibly imagine for the outdoor world.
17:12You name it, On The Spot X Store has it, and it'll be shipped right to your door.
17:18We're both involved in building custom deer blinds for people.
17:22We also deal with a retail store.
17:24Over a million SKUs on the website.
17:25Time to time, we'll pick up a house that's pretty much, you know, foreclosure or run it real low in cost.
17:32We'll flip it, we'll rent it out for a little bit, and then we'll try and sell it.
17:37It's always fun to do just to kind of keep you going with the builds going here.
17:40It just needs builds.
17:41It's like you could be doing 10 different projects in one day because you've got to keep going so fast.
17:46I mean, you've just got to quickly figure out how to do it the best way, and then just move on to the next.
17:50I enjoy renovation hunters so much.
17:54Now, don't get me wrong, it's very hard work.
17:57I mean, what you guys see in this little snippet of time is nothing compared to eight days of brutal renovations.
18:06I'm talking dark in the morning until dark at night, sometimes way past.
18:12But even with all that being said, it is very fun.
18:15We love to do it for the families.
18:18We love hanging out with our friends.
18:19And believe it or not, I miss it when I'm not here.
18:23That's the best tool ever.
18:25Oh, yeah.
18:26That's my clamp-on to an extra piece of wood.
18:28Yes, exactly.
18:31My name is Daniel, and I'm Little Camper.
18:34Big Camper's little brother.
18:37I'm Kyle Prince from North Carolina.
18:39Just doing a small little construction company, Prince Construction, LLC.
18:43Sixth generation carpenter.
18:44Love what I do and really enjoying what we're doing here as well.
18:48Definitely a privilege to work alongside of Hal and Kevin.
18:52I appreciate them letting me be out here and be a part of this adventure.
18:56So this is only my second build being here.
18:59A lot of these guys have been together for a while now.
19:02For me personally, I was really nervous about coming in.
19:05But they welcomed me with open arms.
19:06I feel like I'm part of a family here.
19:08It's been great.
19:09It's been nice knowing everybody.
19:11And hopefully this is a relationship that will last a while.
19:14Final touches on the deck.
19:16All we need is some handrail, and we are done.
19:18If there's one thing I've noticed is how good the crew is.
19:22Everybody's working together as a team.
19:24It seems like everybody's pretty knowledgeable, and it's working out real well.
19:29I think the biggest thing is helping people out.
19:32Remodel these places for families and their kids and so forth, where everybody can come together.
19:37It's really neat being able to give that back to other people.
19:43Unbelievable.
19:44Do you notice anything missing?
19:46Yeah.
19:47Wall.
19:48Our wall is coming.
19:51Where's the basement?
19:53That's amazing.
19:54That is unreal.
19:56Over here, you'll see a vaulted ceiling now.
19:59When I came inside and I saw the work, it's just totally incredible.
20:03You can tell it's done with a lot of care, and I appreciate the workers and the men and women that put forth the effort.
20:10I mean, it's definitely special.
20:11First class.
20:12These people put their heart and soul in this.
20:16So this is your crew.
20:17Let's say big thanks to the crew.
20:20We're not worthy.
20:21The crew just never ceases to amaze me what they pull off when they're all beat down.
20:32It's just, it's a gut check.
20:34This is about a mission that everybody is heartfelt, invested in, 100%.
20:40You have no idea what you're walking into.
20:42I know how to go in.
20:44Yeah, man.
20:45Go.
20:46Yeah.
20:46This is crazy.
20:48Look what they did with the stairs.
20:51Wait, wait, wait.
20:52They moved them.
20:53That's crazy.
20:55I have a custom-made table.
20:59And because at Maryland I always did puzzles, this is a puzzle board.
21:03Greatest reveal yet.
21:04And I can put puzzle pieces.
21:05I am happier than I think I've been in a long time.
21:08Season three has come to an end, but season four is already in the plannings.
21:12Season four is already in the plannings.
