00:00Honduras on the Move is a journalistic series by TELASUR that covers various regions of
00:05the Central American nation to show the world stories of success and human development.
00:11In this occasion, our Special Envoy, Roberto Bopresa, and the series production team traveled
00:16to the Department of Comayagua, where they got a first-hand look at the coffee production
00:20project led by women.
00:22In the upper part of the Central Western Region of Honduras is the Department of Comayagua,
00:29amidst clouds and mountains lies La Libertad, a small municipality dedicated to growing
00:34coffee, and amidst the coffee plantations, we met Leticia and Valesca, two coffee producers
00:40who are running successful enterprises.
00:45It is something that has been exclusive to men, but today women have been gradually making
00:49our way into this sector, which I am very proud to belong to, and also to represent as a woman.
00:58I have been involved in this production process for about 10 years now, because I manage
01:06everything.
01:07I bring the people, I go to find the cutters, I work with them, and I even cut coffee with
01:12them.
01:15These women not only manage their crops on their farm, but have now moved on to producing
01:20and marketing their own brand.
01:25What we have always done as a family is grow coffee.
01:28But now, we also have our own coffee brand, and we also have a coffee shop, where we serve
01:33our coffee.
01:35The example, the tenacity and the success of these producers have inspired many women,
01:40whom they have helped in their enterprises.
01:45Many women come here and you share.
01:47We do a lot of training, and we also share our conversations as women.
01:54I am not only making an impact on other women, but also on my daughters.
01:59I have two daughters, and I want to leave them with the legacy that coffee is part of our culture,
02:04and that they too can and are capable of doing it.
02:07These women are part of a cooperative that promotes the development of the golden grain
02:13in Comayagua, a department that leads the country's production of nearly 15 million quintals
02:18per year.
02:21Coffee is exported from Comayagua, and in addition to that, the agro industry is being promoted
02:27to great extent, which is about adding value to the product, to coffee.
02:31Today, many people already have their own coffee brands and coffee shops, and they sell
02:37coffee products.
02:39This makes us very proud because we as a country also have to encourage this added value, and
02:44not just the sale of raw materials.
02:49The government supports coffee producers, the coffee growers bonus program has benefited
02:53thousands of small coffee growers with supplies, and now they are ready to deliver tools from
02:58a donation by the Chinese government, valued at 200 million dollars.
03:03A kit for textile handling, that includes a chainsaw, a chopper, a cedar, and a motor pump,
03:14which are key tools that help us with fumigation against rust, wheat and tissue handling, which
03:23is very important on coffee farms.
03:24The kit will also be sent to production companies in La Libertad as an incentive to continue growing.
