00:00Facebook says it will suspend former President Donald Trump's account for two years with an
00:04opportunity to be reinstated in 2023 if certain conditions are met. The decision came in response
00:10to the ruling from Facebook's oversight board on May 5th, which upheld the company's initial
00:14decision to suspend Trump but added that the company was not justified in imposing a quote
00:19indefinite ban. The board added that Facebook had six months to justify the nature of the ban.
00:24On Friday, Facebook VP of Global Affairs Nick Clegg wrote a blog post announcing the two-year
00:29suspension and outlined the criteria through which Trump may be reinstated. Clegg wrote,
00:34at the end of this period we will look to experts to assess whether the risk to public safety has
00:38receded. We will evaluate external factors including instances of violence, restrictions on peaceful
00:43assembly, and other markers of civil unrest. He added, if we determine that there is still a
00:48serious risk to public safety, we will extend the restriction for a set period of time and continue
00:52to re-evaluate until that risk has receded. Clegg went on to say that once Trump's accounts on
00:57Facebook and Instagram are reinstated, quote, there will be a strict set of rapidly escalating
01:02sanctions that will be triggered if Mr. Trump commits further violations in the future,
01:06up to and including permanent removal of his pages and accounts. In its own statement following
01:10Facebook's announcement, the Facebook Oversight Board said that it, quote, is reviewing Facebook's
01:14response to the board's decision in the case involving former U.S. President Donald Trump,
01:19and will offer further comment once this review is complete. Trump's accounts were suspended
01:23indefinitely from Facebook in January in the wake of the riot at the U.S. Capitol.
