00:00This is the story of one of the best-known of all the saints, Patrick.
00:26His story is a mixture of fact and legend.
00:29As it is with so many other saints, the man who brought the Christian faith to the land
00:35of Hibernia, now known as Ireland, came from across the Channel in Roman Britain.
00:42He was a Roman citizen during the period when the empire was close to its ragged end.
00:55His name was Patrick.
01:10He was born into the Christian faith.
01:13He was a young man who did not know the true God, and he had no idea about salvation.
01:21Well, if I'm causing any trouble...
01:28Stand by me.
01:31You can keep your old hikes.
01:33We're here for your star chest.
01:35I'm going to kill you.
01:39I'm going to kill you.
01:42I'm going to kill you.
01:44They were the Gaels, the pagan inhabitants of Hibernia.
02:10The Romans never conquered them, and they considered the Gaels barbarians.
02:24Not a bad day's work.
02:29Off the board.
02:39Get moving.
03:05All over.
03:07Who will rescue us?
03:15You're citizens of the Empire.
03:17What Empire?
03:19No one's coming to rescue us.
03:23This is our life now.
03:25What's left of it?
03:27Follow me.
03:39Follow me.
03:49Follow me.
03:51Follow me.
03:55Follow me.
03:57Follow me.
03:59Follow me.
04:03Follow me.
04:07Sit down.
04:09Sit down.
04:39Not you.
04:45He's hungry.
04:46Why are you punishing him?
05:09He's hungry.
05:39I am Milhu, but you will call me master.
06:01I am glad that you are here, for you are young, you are strong, for the next weeks you will
06:08sleep in the hut beyond.
06:11You will do as I tell you to do.
06:14And if I say sit, sit.
06:17Do I have protection as a citizen of Rome?
06:31Do I have protection as a citizen of Rome?
06:38And what kind of protection do you wish for, oh citizen of Rome?
06:46Is it for yourself or for your fellow Roman citizens?
06:51Or are you thinking that your head might stand on the highest pike?
07:04That will be my decision when the time comes.
07:09Or are you thinking that Roman soldiers might come and rescue you?
07:12Well, the answer is no.
07:17You will speak what I tell you to speak.
07:22You will shepherd one of my flocks.
07:25You will shear the sheep in spring.
07:29These will be your principal tasks as a shepherd.
07:32You will be allowed to kill one sheep each season to feed yourself, just one.
07:40If I find that you have stolen from me, you will be sacrificed to Aron, the god of the underworld.
07:50Do you understand me?
07:52Do you understand me?
07:54Now, sit.
08:20What?
08:21I'm naked.
08:22I'll be honest.
08:23Okay.
08:24I'll go.
08:25I'll go.
08:26Let's go.
08:27I have a fish.
08:28I'll be right back.
08:29I'll go.
08:30Let's go.
08:31I'll go.
08:32I'll go.
08:33I'll go.
08:34Anything else?
08:35I'll go.
08:36There are a fish.
08:37That is a fish.
08:38There is.
08:39There's a fish.
08:40There is just a fish.
08:41There is a fish with a fish.
08:43All the fish.
08:45There is, but this is a fish I have to be.
08:46Help! Help!
08:54You. Come on.
09:12Help! Help!
09:15What are you doing?
09:16Taking your sheep for the first season.
09:20But why?
09:25Because I can.
09:29But what am I going to eat?
09:35Eat the dried meat. There. That's where you take the sheep.
09:45You, you, you.
09:50What did you get here?
09:52That's right!
09:54That's what I love.
09:57That's what I think.
10:00That's what I love.
11:02Patrick came to believe that the ordeal of being abducted into slavery was a punishment
11:08for turning away from God.
12:10They were the forest dwellers.
12:28These were pagans who survived on what they could forage.
13:36Let's go.
14:06Let's go.
14:36Let's go.
15:06And he started to pray, day and night.
15:09Let's go.
15:39Let's go.
16:09Let's go.
16:39As time went by, the hunger in Hibernia grew worse.
17:01And Patrick had to make a choice.
17:04I offer you this sheep.
17:16I offer you this sheep.
17:28We have thanks to you.
17:30May joy, may joy rise up to greet you at every dawn.
17:35Let's go.
17:37Let's go.
17:38Let's go.
17:39Let's go.
17:42Let's go.
17:43Let's go.
17:48Let's go.
17:49Let's go.
17:55Let's go.
17:56Let's go.
17:58Let's go.
17:59Let's go.
18:00Let's go.
18:05Let's go.
18:06Let's go.
18:12Boy.
18:13What are you doing?
18:14I've come for the sheep.
18:16Gather them up and load them into the cart.
18:18Car.
18:19What's your price to me?
18:25Car.
18:26Car.
18:27What's your price to me?
18:32Let's go.
18:37Let's go.
18:41Oh, God.
18:46Amen.
18:49Oh, my God.
19:19Oh, my God.
19:49Oh, my God.
20:19Oh, my God.
20:49Oh, my God.
21:19Oh, my God.
21:49Oh, my God.
22:19Oh, my God.
22:49Oh, my God.
23:19Oh, my God.
23:49Oh, my God.
24:19Now it is time for you to return home.
24:23A ship is made ready for you.
24:27Go to the shore.
24:28May the tides, may the tides bear you safely on your journey.
24:39May the tides, may the tides.
24:51He found his salvation in the land of his captivity, in Hibernia.
25:03The revelation came true.
25:06There was a ship, and after six years in bondage, Patrick returned to his homeland.
25:21I became a shepherd.
25:41To the pagans who took you?
25:44No, not the ones that took me.
25:46The ones that foraged for their meals, who'd been driven into the forest.
25:50And I tried to help them to open their hearts to the Lord our God.
25:56My dear son, you have been through a terrible trial.
25:59But that was where my heart opened to God, Mother.
26:03The trial was the first step in the road.
26:05Now you're home, and you can return to yourself.
26:10Mother, there are souls to save everywhere.
26:13Your duty is to your mother...
26:15My greatest duty is to God.
26:17So it is for all of us who have received his word.
26:20So it is for all of us who have received his word.
26:31Please forgive me.
26:32Father, I will no longer look past any man or woman who crosses my path.
26:49I've come to serve God.
27:07I see that we have no choice other than to give all of ourselves to God.
27:20Which means to give all of ourselves to those most in need.
27:23I saw it every minute of the day during my years as a slave.
27:26I was in Hibernia.
27:29I was herding sheep for the pagans who took me away from my home.
27:32And the people came to me from out of the darkness.
27:35And they cried out for God's love.
27:37Even though they didn't know how to say it.
27:39And I gave them whatever I could.
27:42Of my food.
27:43Of my clothing.
27:44Of the animals I garnered.
27:45I gave them my love.
27:48God's love.
27:50There is nothing else.
27:53Will you admit me?
27:58Yes.
28:01And how will I begin?
28:06Will I bring food to the people?
28:09Or will I take care of the sick?
28:11You will begin serving God right now.
28:17By sweeping the floor.
28:20Every day.
28:21I think again.
28:22All right.
28:23I can see.
28:24All right.
28:25I'm afraid again all right.
28:26I saw ...
28:27But I'm afraid and like all right.
28:29Maybe we will get up here.
28:30Every day I didn't know and like a holy day.
28:31I want to excuse
28:33Paul now.
28:34How we do elusiveplanet all right now.
28:35Your screening is a little miniature in문icon.
28:36Now.
28:37Let's speak to Paul.
28:38For stay away from David?
28:39For가지 to Paul now.
28:40Phone to Paul now.

30:47and after you just accused him
30:49of giving away one of our sheep
30:50and now he's to become a new abbot
30:52how can this be
30:53that will be for one reason
30:56and one reason alone
30:57Patrick is argumentative
31:01stubborn

37:08It was where the water suddenly started flowing, so many years before.
37:38I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.
37:53You are forgiven.
37:56All is forgiven in the light of God.
38:02Dear Lord, on this sacred site we will build our church, the first of many.
38:09And now, with this holy water, I will baptize anyone who will come forth and walk in the way of the Lord.
38:22Good woman.
38:25Bless you.
38:26Father, I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.
38:32I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.
38:49You answered my call.
38:58Of course I did.
39:01God watches over us all.
39:05He sent a son who lived among people many years ago.
39:09And his son's name was Jesus.
39:13And he died.
39:16But then he returned from death.
39:19Just like you.
39:20This leaf is the Father, God.
39:28And this leaf next to it is the Son, Jesus Christ.
39:32And this third leaf is the Holy Ghost.
39:36There they are, all three of them, on separate leaves.
39:41But they are together, on the same stem.
39:45Because they are separate.
39:48But they are one.
39:50We found a wonderful place for the church, didn't we?
40:08Yes, we did.
40:20Patrick returned to Ireland in 433 AD.
40:33It was said that in the decades that followed, he established 700 churches and ordained 5,000 priests.
40:40By the time of Patrick's death in 461, what had once been a pagan stronghold was transformed into a beacon of the Christian faith.
40:52We took the bare bones of the story of St. Patrick, and we tried to make a tale of spiritual awakening and a spiritual discipline, which led to his power as a leader in the church.
41:16I just, I love that we see somebody coming to spiritual revelation, really, out of the hellscape of slavery.
41:28He kind of came to God through those two roads that so many of us do, through nature.
41:35First, being a shepherd of the animals, and then through prayer.
41:41Prayer and the solitude, and the beauty of the solitude.
41:46And the only one he can share with is God.
41:49And the care of the sheep is the metaphor for the whole thing.
41:52Yeah, and he goes back, which is incredible for me.
41:55Yeah, he goes back.
41:56He could have just stayed at home and said, that was a terrible time.
41:59I was a slave, right?
42:00That's right, he didn't have to go back to Hibernia, but he did.
42:02Yeah, and so that, to me, is the part that's the most moving.
42:04You mentioned solitude.
42:05I love that this episode has so few words compared to some of the others.
42:09That's right.
42:10He's by himself.
42:11We think of a missionary as shouting from the housetops, urging people to come to the gospel.
42:16But he carries this faith from the continent onto this island inside, and he bears it within him in solitude.
42:24But it's still so powerful that it keeps him alive, the way it's kept so many imprisoned and enslaved people alive.
42:30Right.
42:30And he feels sent, which is what a missionary is.
42:33Missio means to be sent.
42:34He feels sent to go back to Ireland and preach by not only words, but by his example.
42:41He must have been incredibly charismatic, too.
42:43And, you know, like St. Peter before him, a tough guy as well.
42:46He apparently was a tough guy, and was hard-headed, and caused a lot of arguments.
42:50In religious communities, we say the saints and the martyrs.
42:53The martyrs are the ones that have to live with the saints.
42:56You know, saints are tough people.
42:57They're demanding, right?
42:59And they have to be.
43:00And they can be tough to live with, and tough to work with and work for.
43:03After Patrick created or helped create the church in Ireland, Ireland was cut off from the rest of Europe.
43:09That period of becoming Christian and monasteries actually developing.
43:15In other words, there's two or three people first, and it becomes bigger and 20, and then they make a little monastery.
43:20And then that monastery took upon them all the literature and knowledge of what was left of the Western Roman Empire.
43:29One monk, one book transferring line by line, by hand.
43:32They're the ones who saved so much of Western civilization.
43:37And so they had that power, too, the power of knowledge.
43:39St. Patrick is certainly instrumental.
43:41And as you were saying, Marty, the development of the monasteries is key to understand Irish Catholicism.
43:47I think what's so interesting is the influence that the Irish church, the Irish Catholic church, had on the rest of the world, particularly the United States.
43:54Right, so not only Irish immigrants coming, but the clergy and the bishops being largely Irish.
44:01That small island, right, has this outsized influence on the rest of the church, and I think still does today.
44:07We invented a kind of turning point, actually was inspired by a scene from Inmar Bergman's film, The Virgin Spring,
44:13where this act of brutality is followed by a signal from the divine, a sign of grace that kind of leads to redemption,
44:21and that is the water from the stone.
44:24You know, in making films and literature, there's a tradition of sudden spiritual enlightenment.
44:29Fiction and cinema, I think they could give us a model for considering spiritual possibilities in our lives.
44:37William James, he distinguished between once-born people and twice-born.
44:41The twice-born is the strong convert of the kind that you're describing here.
44:45Yes.
44:45And then Flannery O'Connor said, well, if you're a dramatic artist, you're going to be drawn to the twice-born.
44:50Because that, um, the shortest line between two points is a sudden, violent episode.
44:56That's right.
44:57A dramatic change in a person's life that happens through these experiences is just much more dramatic
45:02when it happens to the man being knocked off his horse, or what happens in this episode.
45:07Is it artistic license?
45:08No, I think there's something that gets to the heart of how religion operates.
45:11No, I think there's something that gets to the heart of how religion operates.
45:16No, I think there's something that gets to the heart of how religion operates.
45:18No, I think there's something that gets to the heart of how religion operates.
45:20No, I think there's something that gets to the heart of how religion operates.
45:21No, I think there's something that gets to the heart of how religion operates.
45:22No, I think there's something that gets to the heart of how religion operates.
45:23No, I think there's something that gets to the heart of how religion operates.
45:24No, I think there's something that gets to the heart of how religion operates.
45:25No, I think there's something that gets to the heart of how religion operates.
45:26No, I think there's something that gets to the heart of how religion operates.
45:27No, I think there's something that gets to the heart of how religion.
