00:58:05When I was little, the first thing I wanted to be, obviously, was a princess.
00:58:09Then a barrister.
00:58:10Then I realised I just wanted to wear the costume.
00:58:13Maybe I actually want to be an actor.
00:58:16ER came calling and it changed my life.
00:58:20It really was a family.
00:58:22I stayed for 22 years.
00:58:25Los Angeles and ER have been a colossal, definitive part of her life.
00:58:30And to leave them behind was not straightforward.
00:58:32It wasn't easy.
00:58:34Welcome to the breakfast club.
00:58:38The major factors in coming back.
00:58:43My daughter was born in America.
00:58:45I had finished ER.
00:58:47I had met my husband, Jonathan.
00:58:49I'd started commuting to do Doctor Who.
00:58:52And Jonathan was doing a very long commute to LA.
00:58:55I was doing a very long commute to LA.
00:58:56And there's a point at which you just go, we need to be together.
00:58:59Jonathan is just the most incredible human being.
00:59:04He gets me in a way that nobody else really has.
00:59:08He writes me poetry.
00:59:10And he also will learn a poem and then just recite it to me.
00:59:15Do you remember from our wedding?
00:59:17Oh my gosh.
00:59:18It had become a fairy girl with blossoms in her golden hair.
00:59:22Who called me by her name, then ran and faded through the brightening air.
00:59:27I'm insanely proud of her.
00:59:34And it's extraordinary to me to think that only a year ago, Alex was really not well.
00:59:42I was diagnosed with uterine cancer.
00:59:46I had to go in and have a full hysterectomy.
00:59:51Then they found out that the cancer had moved.
00:59:55I had to have radiotherapy.
00:59:57So coming off the back of that, getting the all clear, I decided that I would do strictly.
01:00:03When I watch her dance, I think, you know, thank you for being so brave.

01:00:13It's just an incredible gift that I will take with me till the end of my days.
