00:00I'm off the coast of south-eastern Tasmania with dive instructor Will Mafer and extreme
00:10adventurer Chris Bacon to try something new, catching crayfish by hand.
00:14Any crayfish we want to get in here we have to get by hand and that also means in Tasmania
00:23they're not utilising any tools, so no spear guns or metal rods or lassoes, yeah.
00:31We're heading to the boys favourite dive spot, Alumcliffs.
00:37You know, I'm mildly worried about not catching a crayfish, sharks and drowning.
00:44Those would be the main things.
00:46It doesn't prevent me from doing it though.
00:50Below the surface are plenty of caves and crevices, ideal hiding spots for southern
00:55rock lobsters, or crays as they're known here.
01:06I'm a little bit excited, I'm more apprehensive though.
01:09I feel like the excitement comes later once you, you know, you're like I can breathe and
01:13I'm calm underwater and then you're excited to be there.
01:16Prior to that you're just, you know, I'm apprehensive because, you know, it's not our world.
01:22As this is my first time catching crays by hand, Will is showing me a surefire technique.
01:28So Annalise, when we're down there and we find a crayfish.
01:30Yeah, you kind of have your arm like poised.
01:32Yep.
01:33But it's like this.
01:34Yep, underneath.
01:35Oh no, your hand is like that.
01:36It's all sort of, you know, the arm like that.
01:38Yeah.
01:39Yep.
01:40Grabbing the horns.
01:41Perfect.
01:42Yep.
01:43Aiming for the horns.
01:44If you grab the long antennas, they'll snap off.
01:45Yep.
01:46So you've got to aim for those big spiky horns and grab onto that.
01:47If you grab the horns and you need more grip, you can get your other hand on the back
01:51or the tail and get the crayfish out of the tail and then into the cash bag.
01:55Yeah.
01:56Let's get into it.
01:57Let's go diving.
01:58Let's do it.
01:59Sweet.
02:00Today, we'll be on scuba, something I haven't done in a little while.
02:07Locked and loaded, in I go.
02:09Okay.
02:10Loaded trip.
