00:00I'm Tom Morris, Jr., and this is Fugitives Caught on Tape.
00:23Let's get into it.
00:24This guy has no regard for anybody else in the road.
00:30Let's get into it.
00:31Stop the car.
00:32Stop the boat.
00:33Get out of here or not.
00:35Let's start moving.
00:37First up, we're in Wood County, Ohio, where state troopers are in pursuit of two fugitives
00:59wanted for armed robbery and homicide.
01:02They just shot at me.
01:06Earlier, local PD in Monroe, Michigan, got a 911 call about a shooting.
01:12According to police, two suspects entered a corner store and robbed the clerk at gunpoint.
01:18Once outside, they shot two men at point-blank range before carjacking their truck and fleeing
01:25the scene.
01:26One of the shooting victims, a 34-year-old male, was taken to a hospital with life-threatening
01:31injuries.
01:32He's since recovered, but the other victim, 31-year-old Michael Ronald Beck, Jr., died at
01:38the scene.
01:39Police collected security camera images of the suspects and shared them with neighboring
01:44jurisdictions in Michigan and Ohio.
01:48And about four hours later, state troopers, along with deputies from the Wood County Sheriff's
01:53Office, spotted a vehicle that fit the description of the stolen truck at a rest area near Bowling
01:59Green, Ohio.
02:00Several troopers approached the truck from behind, while another took a position at the
02:06rest stop's highway entrance ramp.
02:08I do not have a good angle here.
02:11We need to move.
02:12We need a white male in the driver's seat.
02:15They're starting the vehicle.
02:18Troopers quickly moved in as the driver put the truck in gear.
02:23Police, stop!
02:24Stop!
02:25They're taking it off.
02:26They're taking it off.
02:27They're taking it off.
02:28The truck pulled out of the rest stop and shockingly headed right for the trooper's
02:32vehicle, turning away at the last possible second.
02:35They're taking it off out of the rest area.
02:38Southbound.
02:39All right, we got high.
02:42Speed's 100, 176 southbound.
02:45They're just driving all over the road.
02:48Now, as they drive recklessly and brandish a weapon...
02:52He's got a gun out the window.
02:54This trooper looks to make a move.
02:57Who's giving me permission to take him out?
03:011844 guys, so...
03:04At what speeds?
03:06At this point it does not matter.
03:08As long as you've got a unit close to you for backup, take them out.
03:11Okay.
03:15But as he moves in to attempt a pit maneuver, the driver fires at the trooper, and he temporarily
03:26loses control of his cruiser.
03:281016.
03:29I'm wondering, I crashed out.
03:30I'm catching up.
03:31725 checkup.
03:32You okay?
03:33Oh yeah.
03:34Just, you know, a little spin out.
03:35I'm coming.
03:36The trooper quickly rejoins the chase and once again takes the lead.
03:431844.
03:44I got permission to take him out.
03:46Right, take him out.
03:47The higher of the vehicle, the better.
03:48We need to end it.
03:49I know he's shooting at me though.
03:50He's shooting at me.
03:51He got shot at me again.
03:52The fugitives managed to exit the highway and then suddenly come to a complete stop.
03:54We're stopped at the screen.
03:55That's fire.
03:56Troopers fire at the suspects who take off again back toward the highway.
04:23We're back on the on-ramp.
04:26But the suspects never get back on the road.
04:30Instead, continuing to drive on the grassy shoulder.
04:33Crashing out.
04:34He's still in the ditch.
04:36Still in the ditch.
04:38Might get stuck here.
04:40Eventually, the terrain becomes too much for the stolen truck to navigate.
04:46Crashing out.
04:49Watch out.
04:51As the disabled vehicle comes to a stop, law enforcement officers surround the crash site.
05:01Because the suspects are armed, troopers hold their positions.
05:06And before long, day turns into night.
05:09Eventually, the passenger begins to comply with the officer's commands.
05:14Steven, we need to see both your hands.
05:16Both your hands.
05:17Hands up.
05:18Hands up.
05:19Hands up.
05:20Cuff them.
05:21Cuff them.
05:22Cuff them.
05:23Cuff them.
05:24Search them.
05:25Cuff them.
05:26Cuff them.
05:27Cuff them.
05:28Once he's cuffed, officers with shields move in on the truck.
05:31Stop moving.
05:32Stop moving.
05:33Stop moving.
05:34Stop moving.
05:35Stop moving.
05:36Stop moving.
05:37Get out of the car.
05:38Help, help, help, help, help.
05:40Get out of the car.
05:42Get out of the car.
05:43Get out of the car.
05:44I got hands.
05:45I got hands.
05:46You got it?
05:47The suspects were ID'd as 29-year-old Steven Jones, the driver, and 44-year-old Ronnie Lee
05:57Oliver, the passenger.
05:58They were both extradited back to Michigan and charged with homicide, armed robbery, carjacking,
06:05and assault with intent to murder.
06:07Jones pled guilty to all charges and was sentenced to 40 to 82 years in prison.
06:13His earliest possible release is in 2065, when he'll be 71 years old.
06:20Oliver, who'd previously served 20 years in prison for robbery, pled not guilty, and
06:26his case is pending.
06:31Next, we're in Sebastian County, Arkansas, where state troopers are in pursuit of a suspect
06:37of a suspect.
06:38The sheriff's attorney is appointed for violating his probation, who just fled from deputies,
06:41and is now driving recklessly through local streets.
06:44Earlier, 47-year-old David Bruce, who was known by officers to have an active felony warrant
06:50for violating his probation conditions in a drug possession case, was spotted by a task
06:56force agent from the prosecutor's office and then pulled over by Sebastian County Corporal
07:01Joseph Mahan.
07:04Another deputy arrived to assist.
07:07Hello.
07:08Hello.
07:09Hey, Corporal Mahan, sheriff's office.
07:10How's it going?
07:11I'm doing good.
07:12Mr. Bruce?
07:13Yes, sir.
07:14During the stop, a state trooper, Corporal Jonathan Bass, arrived as additional backup.
07:20Step up with me.
07:21Don't put it in drop.
07:22Do not.
07:23I don't want to do nothing.
07:24I don't want to do nothing.
07:25I don't want to do nothing.
07:26But just as Corporal Bass rolled forward to get a closer look.
07:30Keep your hand off the shipper.
07:31Hey!
07:32Hey!
07:33He took off.
07:34He took off.
07:35He took off.
07:36He took off.
07:37The suspect took off.
07:38And the corporal took lead position for the pursuit.
07:41Seconds later, Corporal Matthew Price and his canine partner Rick see the fugitive's
07:46car heading directly toward them and join the pursuit.
07:49I'm going to jump in here behind me.
07:51Now, Corporal Price and a third trooper join Corporal Bass and two other deputies in the
07:56chase as the suspect begins to drive erratically.
08:00I'm still northbound, coming up to 71.
08:03Stand by to let you know which way we're going.
08:06As the driver approaches a busy intersection, he blows through a red light and makes a left
08:12turn.
08:13Corporal Bass cuts through two cars at the light to keep pace with the fugitive, who then begins
08:20driving on the opposite side of the road.
08:27As the chase continues, the suspect suddenly makes this unusual move.
08:35The suspect enters an apartment complex and drives into a vacant dirt lot in the back of
08:40the property.
08:43The troopers follow him.
08:44Corporal Price circles around these storage units in an attempt to cut the fugitive off,
08:50while Corporal Bass moves in to try a pit maneuver.
08:55The suspect seems to be blocked in, but he isn't giving up.
09:11When he refuses to exit the vehicle, Corporal Price and canine Rick move in.
09:28As Corporal Price gets his hand on the window, the suspect tries to raise it.
09:37So then, the trooper smashes the window with his bare hand, then lifts canine Rick into
09:44the vehicle, while Trooper Bass uses his baton to smash the passenger window.
09:50Corporal Price runs around to the other side of the vehicle to retrieve his dog.
10:05After being bitten by canine Rick, the suspect finally decides to surrender.
10:20The trooper uses a taser probe on the suspect, and he's taken into custody.
10:30I need to pay attention and listen next time.
10:34I was, buddy.
10:35No, you were not.
10:36Obviously, you weren't.
10:37You had the option to pull over.
10:38Shut your mouth.
10:39I understand that, but guess what?
10:40I'm done.
10:41I'm stopped now.
10:42You're right.
10:43You're stopped, because we had to ram you three different times.
10:45Man, you almost hit him.
10:51He was rolling the window up and rolled my fingers up the window.
10:55I rolled the window and picked that damn dog out there, boy.
10:58That dog's a bitch.
10:59I didn't help you none, did I?
11:02Bruce, who was already on probation for possession of a controlled substance and paraphernalia,
11:07theft of property, and criminal mischief, was arrested and charged with battery, resisting
11:12arrest, and felony fleeing a vehicle with substantial danger of death.
11:17He later pled guilty to all three charges and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
11:23He'll be eligible for parole after serving 11 years, when he'll be 57 years old.
11:29No officers were injured during the incident, including Canine Rick.
11:34Next, we're in Tampa, Florida, where state troopers are pursuing a DUI suspect who they say stole an ambulance
11:46and is now driving dangerously.
11:48You got to get him to stop as soon as you can.
11:51Earlier, around 8.30 p.m., Florida Highway Patrol got a report that a Tampa Fire Department ambulance
11:58had been stolen from a local hospital.
12:01Within 10 minutes, two troopers spotted the vehicle as it drove toward them on this street.
12:07Both troopers made U-turns and attempted a traffic stop.
12:14He just stopped. We're going to leave it here.
12:17But it doesn't last long.
12:19Run in. Run in. Run in. I got it. I got it.
12:21I got it.
12:22Go first, this traffic.
12:24Hey, he's running.
12:25Hold out.
12:2631.
12:27In the mood.
12:28The suspect speeds off and proceeds to blow through several stop signs.
12:3745 an hour.
12:38South on Friday.
12:39Then makes a left turn onto a dusty road, creating tough pursuit conditions for the officers.
12:48And as he approaches this main road, he blows through another stop sign and nearly T-bones a local driver.
13:01You got to get him stopped as soon as you can.
13:04The putative's driving becomes even more dangerous as he weaves in and out of the opposite lane, nearly slamming into this car.
13:16Suddenly, the driver makes a right turn and pulls over.
13:29Coming to a stop.
13:31Coming to a stop.
13:32Coming to a stop.
13:33Turn it off!
13:34Turn it off, .
13:35Put your hands up!
13:36Hands up!
13:37Hands up!
13:38Hands up!
13:39Hands up!
13:40As the troopers try to get the suspect to raise both of his hands, they realize he's using one of them to drink a can of beer.
13:55Put your hands up!
14:00But when he doesn't comply, troopers make their move.
14:05Get the out!
14:07Get out!
14:08Get the out!
14:09You words of a gun.
14:10Get the out!
14:11Get the out!
14:12Get out!
14:13What is it?
14:14You both of a gun big boy.
14:15Get in.
14:16A little bit of a gun.
14:17Meanwhile, all cops passes the gun.
14:22As additional troopers, and Tampa PD arrived to assist, this officer jumps in the cab to stop the ambulance from rolling backwards...
14:29Stop resisting!
14:30I'm mad!
14:32While another confiscates the suspect's beverage.
14:33I hope the field is worthy.
14:34Where'd you like the bike?
14:35Why'd you go back?
14:36Why'd you really go right back?
14:37The driver was identified as 43-year-old Michael Eskelen. Eskelen had three prior DUIs and multiple
14:44driving with suspended license convictions on his record. He told officers that he was at the
14:50hospital after drinking for two days, and when the Tampa Fire Department wouldn't give him a ride
14:55home, he decided to take the ambulance and drive himself. He was charged with burglary of an
15:01emergency vehicle, fleeing, eluding, DUI, driving while license revoked, habitual offender,
15:09resisting an officer, and other charges. He pled guilty to all charges and was sentenced to five
15:15years in prison with 151 days credit for time served to be followed by 24 months community
15:22control and probation.
15:31Next, we're in Hobbs, New Mexico, where police are in pursuit of a man who broke into an
15:38airplane, then stole a vehicle from the local airport.
15:42Earlier, around 9.45 p.m., Hobbs PD received a call about a suspicious individual trespassing
15:50at the Lee County Regional Airport, which was closed. Security cameras captured this footage
15:56of the man using a baggage trailer to break into an airplane. The suspect left the aircraft
16:04empty-handed, but then used the baggage trailer to smash through a glass wall and into the terminal
16:12before taking off. Now, Sergeant Royal Hopper is first to spot the trailer on a local road.
16:21He went out to the airport and stole one of their, like, luggage cards.
16:23The sergeant quickly flips a U-turn and attempts a traffic stop. The suspect acknowledges Sergeant
16:29Hopper with a wave, but refuses to pull over.
16:34No problem. I'll be all sorry.
16:37As the officers try to figure out their next move, the suspect keeps going
16:42and decides to document the chase by pulling out his phone and recording himself.
16:53As the slow-speed pursuit continues, Sergeant Hopper seems to become frustrated.
16:59I just didn't know if we had any other options just to follow him at 10 miles an hour. I know
17:04we can't pit him. I know we can't tase him. I almost want to just jump out and run beside him and grab his ass.
17:13Moments later, when the suspect goes to make a turn right in front of him...
17:17Drop off the vehicle. Stop it.
17:20...Sgt. Hopper decides to take his own advice.
17:23...Sgt. Hopper charges at the suspect, who resists by kicking him.
17:37A struggle ensues, and Hopper grabs the suspect around the head.
17:43As Officer Olnick arrives for backup, Sergeant Hopper tosses the suspect to the ground.
17:49...Additional officers arrive to assist, but the suspect continues resisting, and the situation becomes even more intense.
18:04He's trying to get my gun. He's trying to get my gun.
18:06Tase him. Tase him. Tase him. Hit him.
18:09...F**k.
18:12Oh, stop resisting. Stop resisting. Stop resisting.
18:14Give us your hands now.
18:15Give us your hands now.
18:16Give us your hands now.
18:17Give us your hands.
18:18Give us your hands.
18:19Give us your hands now.
18:20Give us your hands now.
18:23Eventually, they get the suspect in cuffs.
18:26He's detained right now.
18:27But he continues to act out.
18:30Hey!
18:31Uh-uh.
18:32Uh-uh.
18:33You need to calm down.
18:34No.
18:35Ah!
18:36You're fine.
18:38You're fine.
18:39You're fine.
18:40Nobody is hitting anything right now.
18:41It's done.
18:42Knock it off.
18:43You understand.
18:45Stay calm, bud.
18:46Stay calm.
18:47No, no, no, no, no.
18:48Uh-uh.
18:49Stay calm.
18:50During the struggle, Sergeant Hopper was accidentally hit by the taser, but he appears uninjured.
18:56Sergeant, are you okay?
18:58Yeah, I'm good.
18:59I'm sorry, brother.
19:00It's all right, man.
19:01I do that for fun, so it's all good.
19:03What's your name?
19:04Sebastian.
19:05Sebastian.
19:06We're gonna try and sit you up.
19:07Don't be crazy.
19:08Okay?
19:09He's about to go to jail.
19:10Well, sounds awful.
19:11I can go to jail.
19:12I don't care.
19:13Yeah, you have to go to jail.
19:14That kind of goes with that.
19:15The suspect, ID'd as 32-year-old Sebastian Rio Sierra, refused medical treatment and was
19:22taken to jail.
19:23For his actions during the pursuit, Rio Sierra was charged with aggravated assault upon a
19:29peace officer, resisting evading or obstructing an officer, and other charges.
19:34But he accepted a deal pleading guilty to one count of aggravated assault upon a peace
19:40officer, and the other charges were dismissed.
19:43Rio Sierra was sentenced to 18 months in prison, suspended, and put on supervised probation
19:49for 18 months.
19:50For breaking into the airport, he was charged with larceny, two counts of criminal damage
19:55to property, and burglary of a vehicle.
19:58He has yet to enter a plea, and that case is pending.
20:05I'm Tom Morris, Jr.
20:08We'll see you next time.
