00:00We're at a party at a pinwheel and someone was shooting and someone got caught.
00:29Okay, hold on one second, okay?
00:31All right.
00:32Yeah?
00:33And you're at the Tidwell, um, are you with the patient now that was shot?
00:38Yes.
00:39All right.
00:40Where were they shot at?
00:42I don't know.
00:43I don't know.
00:44They were one of my friends.
00:46Okay, do you know who shot them?
00:48No.
00:49Okay.
00:50I've got people in the way, okay?
00:59A call for service comes out saying there's an active shooter.
01:10So we knew that this was a warehouse, concert event.
01:13And as an officer, we know our job is to get there and help isolate the threat.
01:19In round two, the location, my body camera activates automatically because there's an
01:31emergency happening.
01:3424, I'm on scene.
01:3624, receive it.
01:37Anytime you hear there is a threat, there's a firearm, there's a weapon, it is normal for
01:43your brain to go, this is dangerous, this could harm you.
01:47I'm a father, I'm married, I have a family, but the sheriff's office is expected to protect
01:53the citizens of Smith County.
01:56I'm on phone with them right now, officer just showed up.
01:59Somebody just got shot down here.
02:00Where's he at?
02:01Who's the shooter?
02:01They're right at the warehouse.
02:02Where's the shooter?
02:03Um, there's a guy in a white shirt with a gun.
02:06There's a gun?
02:07He's here now.
02:07Okay.
02:08All right.
02:08So there's officers here now.
02:1024, getting reports that the gunman has already left the scene.
02:15I'm going to go ahead and double check.
02:16I'm already parked out here on the loop extension at the entrance of Tidwell.
02:20Several subjects are leaving at a high rate of speed.
02:22You might want to pick it up, guys.
02:24Nobody knows.
02:25Nobody knows at this time who the suspect is.
02:31You guys okay?
02:32Yes, somebody up there is bleeding.
02:34He bleeding out.
02:35Hey, sir, he got shot.
02:36He's bleeding.
02:36We got one victim, according to witnesses.
02:42Is the shooter still up there?
02:43Go, go, go, go, go.
02:43Shooter?
02:44Go, go, go.
02:47As deputies approach the scene, they observe people running from the location as if their
02:52life's depended on it.
02:53You don't know if one of those even could be the shooter or if there's multiple shooters,
03:00but you still have to get in there.
03:02Put him down.
03:03Put him down.
03:03Let me see him.
03:04Let me see him.
03:04Where'd he get hit?
03:05Where'd he get hit?
03:06I'll put a bandana right there.
03:08Okay.
03:08All right.
03:08I got an ambulance coming.
03:10Shooter.
03:10Where's he at?
03:11I don't know.
03:12Nobody knows who the shooter is?
03:13No, we don't know.
03:15You don't know who he left?
03:16There's somebody going for him to the hospital right now.
03:17All right, put it down.
03:18Put it down.
03:20Ow!
03:21Trill.
03:21Trill.
03:21Where's Trill here, bro?
03:24Is it really blood right there, bro?
03:25Hey!
03:26Don't worry about that s***.
03:28Trill, don't worry about it, bro.
03:3024, I got one victim shot in the leg.
03:32The victim was identified as Kentrell.
03:34We want to save this man's life.
03:36But you have a femoral artery inside your thigh, and it can be 20 to 30 seconds.
03:41You can bleed out of your body.
03:42You only have seconds to go depending on if it's a deep wound.
03:46Come on.
03:47It's okay.
03:49You want me on top?
03:49You want me on top of the bandana?
03:50No.
03:50No, I ain't no.
03:51You can't breathe in.
03:52We got him.
03:53We got him.
03:54The deputy takes his tourniquet and applies it to the leg.
03:57Open your leg just slowly.
03:58Open your leg.
03:59The tourniquet has then slid in and around the thigh and applying pressure and strapping
04:18it down.
04:18We then wind it up and tighten it.
04:20We got to do that.
04:21We got to do that.
04:22We brought them down here.
04:23We got to do that.
04:24I'm so sorry.
04:26We got to do that.
04:27All right.
04:28It's going to be a little tight.
04:30I'm so sorry.
04:32You're such a great person.
04:33I'm so sorry.
04:35I come back and talking.
04:36That's great.
04:3924, just for information.
04:40Tourniquet's been put on.
04:41Oh, my God.
04:41No.
04:41Greasy.
04:42Tourniquet applies.
04:42And then we can tell the blood flow is stopped, and we leave it there until a medical personnel
04:47take it off.
04:48Sir, did you check on the person inside?
04:51I'm going to be with you in the hallway.
04:52Is there somebody inside?
04:54There's someone right there.
04:55They said they transported another person.
04:57He's laying right there.
04:58There should be somebody inside.
04:59Is there somebody else inside, sir?
05:01Yes, sir.
05:02Then deputies have seen the information that there was another gunshot victim at the location.
05:07Just more and more chaos.
05:0924, you inside or outside the facility?
05:1024, we got a second victim possible.
05:14Come on.
05:15Speed it up.
05:15Three D, possible another victim?
05:17They found the next gunshot victim shirtless at the entrance of the club.
05:22Where'd he get hit?
05:24Look at his mouth.
05:25I think I got hit in his mouth.
05:27I think I got hit in his mouth.
05:29That's why I'm trying to make sure I'm going to do it.
05:32Tempo, we got two victims.
05:33One shot in the leg.
05:34The other one, I don't know where he's hit.
05:35He's unresponsive at this time.
05:38EMS is on scene.
05:39They're coming.
05:39Who did this?
05:41Does anybody know who did this?
05:42We don't know.
05:43Nobody?
05:43No.
05:44They're providing the CPR, and it's just, it's terrible.
05:49They see a small amount of blood coming out of his mouth.
05:51They see him proned out on the ground, and he's not responding to anyone talking to him.
05:55Where's my victim?
05:56Up the top to the right.
05:57We get medical up there.
05:59That's when we realize that he is an actual gunshot wound to his back.
06:06This is not something we're unaccustomed to, but it's something that no one wants to deal with as a human being.
06:11We learned the identity of the unresponsive victim as Keontae Barrett.
06:24He was transported to the hospital.
06:26Keontae was a real good kid.
06:39He was lovable.
06:41He was happy.
06:42He got along with his brothers and sisters.
06:44He cared for all of them, and he was showing them the way that it's supposed to be.
06:50The moment I found out about Keontae getting shot, his brother had called me.
06:55I said, Daddy, they just called me and told me Keontae got shot.
06:59I was in disbelief.
07:01They said, hurry up, get to the hospital, because Keontae's been shot.
07:06Why my son?
07:08Why my son?
07:10I didn't understand.
07:12Keontae was a good person.
07:15I was asking God, you know, why?
07:20Well, we need to make sure we get our scene integrity going up, so we move everybody out here just for a moment.
07:24We're up.
07:25Once we have the medically injured taken care of, we do a safety sweep of the area.
07:31We want to make sure that we don't have a shooter here anymore.
07:34We don't have an active threat.
07:38Were they shot in the leg or the back?
07:39Do you remember where they were?
07:40Two were shot in the leg.
07:41One is headed to the hospital right now, and one shot...
07:44...in the side.
07:45I don't know.
07:46You didn't see anything happen?
07:47No, sir.
07:48The shooter has left.
07:49Information was passed that another gunshot victim, Ira, had already been transported to the hospital.
07:55When I arrive on scene, I do take control of the scene, being the lead detective.
08:03Every decision from there on out goes through me.
08:07At that point, we had three victims at the hospital that had been shot.
08:11That's where the first victim was sitting.
08:15The first one got transported by POV.
08:17Okay.
08:18That wooden fence, that's where the second victim was.
08:22EMS trash where he was lying.
08:24The first thing I want to do is talk to my deputies to see what they've gathered so far.
08:30Shooting happened inside, correct?
08:31Yes.
08:32You're going to walk in, there's a stage right in the middle.
08:36On the left-hand side is where the case scenes are.
08:38So let's go check that out.
08:41My deputies led me to believe that the shooting actually occurred inside the building.
08:49So, of course, we were brought to inside the warehouse.
08:54Inside the warehouse, just chaotic scene.
08:58But one thing I was able to notice right away were casings.
09:06I could actually observe them on the concrete floor.
09:09There's clothing items all over the place.
09:12Chairs torn down.
09:14We can see blood spatter on ground, on some objects.
09:19You can tell that from the knocked-over tables, the trash, cups everywhere.
09:26Just chaos.
09:28My crime scene technician was able to show me evidence of bullet holes in the ceiling.
09:35We found out that a flyer went out for the rap group, the Head Honchos.
09:41They were inviting people to come party with them at Tidwill that night.
09:45And that's why everyone was there that night.
09:49From the evidence so far, we still had a lot of unanswered questions.
09:54We needed more to move forward with our investigation.
09:58I did have deputies go talk to witnesses that were still located on scene and bring those
10:04statements back to me.
10:05And as soon as it happened, everyone got down and died off to the stage.
10:11The shots started going off probably like 10, maybe 10, 15 seconds after the fight started.
10:16What we need to know is who was here, why were you here, what was going on, what did you see?
10:21Colin, did you see anything?
10:22I was the DJ.
10:23OK.
10:24I was on stage.
10:25I was DJing.
10:26And I started seeing the scuffle.
10:27So naturally, I turned the music off.
10:30And when I turned off the music, the only thing I knew, I just heard the shots.
10:36And we all just got down.
10:38And when I got up, my friend Trell was hit and my friend Junior was hit.
10:41And when I went outside, my friend was getting on the ground.
10:43Colin did mention that this all started over an initial physical altercation on the stage
10:53during the concert that night.
10:55Did you see anybody that was doing the shooting?
10:57No, one of them.
10:58What's his name?
10:59PJ.
11:00PJ?
11:01PJ is one of the people involved in the shooting?
11:04Yeah.
11:05I only know his alias is PJ.
11:06Who is PJ and is he my potential shooter?
11:11We need to find out everything we can about him, because he is still a potential threat.
11:16We still don't know exactly what happened, and it was still a mystery for us.
11:30Our deputies were continuing to get witness statements throughout the night.
11:33Receiving the name PJ, the first thing I start thinking is, was this an intentional shooting?
11:39There are so many questions and scenarios that go through my head now.
11:42We need to find out if that's even his real name.
11:45Is it nicknamed, is PJ, or is that short for something?
11:48It might be short for something.
11:49We do not know.
11:50It might be.
11:51We just know about PJ.
11:53White, black, Hispanic.
11:54He is American.
11:55Anybody know where PJ lives?
11:56No, apartment complex in Thailand.
11:57That's all I can tell you.
11:58He lives there with his mom.
12:00Okay.
12:01So PJ lives with his mom.
12:03Through our law enforcement resources and our research, we were able to locate PJ's address.
12:09We wanted to get our deputies and detectives over there as soon as possible so we could
12:14pick him up and bring him in for questioning.
12:27We located PJ and we interviewed him.
12:29Do you like to go by your last name for him?
12:33PJ, is that okay?
12:34Okay.
12:35How are you?
12:36How are you?
12:37We've been out there all day.
12:38I was going to say, you know we've been out there all day.
12:41So, we kind of, you know.
12:43Your name may be me all day.
12:46Good or bad?
12:47It ain't good.
12:49PJ was a young man looking to make a name for himself.
12:55He tells me that he'd go where he'd want to go, where he'd do what he'd want to do.
12:59Do me a favor.
13:00Start to finish.
13:02Tell me from the minute you got there to the minute you left, what is going on?
13:07PJ was there that night at the concert for the rap group, The Head Honchos.
13:14PJ let us know that he's had beef with The Head Honchos for a long time.
13:19During one of The Head Honchos songs they started singing, which was called Red Rum.
13:24And of course, Red Rum means murder, if you twisted words around.
13:29He got very offended by it, and this is what started PJ going on this stage and start fighting
13:35them.
13:36Tells us he's more of a physical fighter and does not carry a gun.
13:40People texting me through PJ, was you shooting at the party?
13:46Was you shooting at the party?
13:47Was you shooting at the party?
13:48Was you shooting at the party?
13:49I know you don't mess with guns.
13:50Are you shooting?
13:51I don't mess with guns.
13:52What the ****?
13:53I mean, what in the world do I look like messing with a gun?
13:58I'm on probation, get caught with one, I'm gone.
14:02I don't want to spend no time in jail, I don't got no, I don't have any intentions.
14:05I don't need, I don't feel the need to take nobody off this earth unless they threatening
14:12me.
14:13What I mean by threatening is in a kill-to-be-kill situation.
14:14PJ did not see who the shooter was, did not.
14:17After our interview with PJ, it was determined that we didn't have any evidence at that time.
14:24We had nothing to hold him on.
14:25I'm more scared of the police than I'm scared of any, another African American.
14:29We did eventually let him go and leave the sheriff's office.
14:46We were, of course, looking for all types of leads.
14:49So I sent my fellow detectives to the hospital so they could talk to the victims to see if
14:53they could relay any new evidence to see who had shot them.
14:58So one of the victims my detective spoke to at the hospital was Cantrell.
15:03Cantrell actually was shot in the leg while on scene.
15:08We were trying to figure out if there was a beef with somebody, if there was somebody
15:12pissed off at you or him.
15:16If you guys were up there rapping, was it a rap battle?
15:19You were talking crap about somebody?
15:21We were just trying to get people out of the state and then belong.
15:26And that dude was just going off.
15:29And then he stole his hands and everybody else started fighting.
15:32I failed.
15:33Do you know who that dude was?
15:35Cantrell just gave me a very vague statement that he was at the club.
15:40He heard people fighting and then he was shot.
15:43Cantrell just didn't really give any indication that he knew who the shooter was.
15:48There was a lot of things that weren't answered that I needed answers to.
15:55After speaking to Cantrell, we located another victim that had also been shot in the leg.
16:01Ira, who was in another part of the hospital.
16:04Tell me about when you got hit.
16:05Did you feel it from the back?
16:07No, I had got punched in the eye first.
16:11Like somebody hit me in the eye.
16:13And then it was like maybe three seconds later, it was pow, pow.
16:17And then, I don't know, I didn't feel the gunshot at first.
16:20But then I slowly started falling down and I was like, yeah, I got a shot.
16:25Ira stated that there was a fight that had broken out and he ended up getting shot in the leg.
16:32Ira also said he didn't see who shot the gun.
16:36We asked him if he could identify anybody on that stage that was included in the fight.
16:41And the name he gave us was Trayvon Maddox, but that was his own friend and he had no thought in the world that his own friend would shoot him.
16:51However, Trayvon Maddox needs to be located because now I'm interested in what Trey has to say and what he observed that night.
16:59The atmosphere that night in the hospital lobby, it was what you would expect with a lot of concerned people looking for information on their family member or their friend.
17:15We also noticed the other victims, Keontae's parents, were there sitting in a consulting room to where they were alone away from everyone.
17:25Detective Loftus and I began speaking to the parents.
17:30All right, Ron, your son, what's your son's name?
17:33Keontae.
17:34Keontae.
17:35K-U-Y.
17:36U-N-E-T-A.
17:37Barron.
17:38You got a tattoo on his own wall?
17:40Is it?
17:41A red, on my blue rose with Susan.
17:43Susan.
17:44Yeah, some other tattoos.
17:46Yeah.
17:47Yeah, on his shoulder.
17:48I forgot what that name was.
17:50He was brought in.
17:55It was too much damage.
17:59He didn't make it?
18:01No, sir.
18:02Oh, my God!
18:04Oh, no!
18:06We had to notify them of what had happened.
18:09Keontae had passed, and we knew at that point we were working a homicide investigation.
18:14And the totality and everything kind of got a lot more intense at that point.
18:21They told us that they couldn't save him.
18:27That they lost him.
18:30That was the moment that it sunk into me that I'm going to have to bury a child.
18:37I just lost a son.
18:40And I was asking God, like, what did I do?
18:44What did I do wrong for you to punish me?
18:49Because you took my son from me.
19:01I died when Keontae died.
19:07When I did let them know, the father was extremely distraught.
19:22He actually knocked me against the wall getting out the door.
19:26And the whole room went dark because he knocked me up against the light switch.
19:31After I notified the parents, they left the room and notified everybody that was outside
19:36that were also waiting for information.
19:49The whole ER erupted.
19:51They were distraught.
19:52They were upset.
19:53They were sad.
19:54And it was just chaos.
19:59Chaos.
20:00They better not hit it!
20:01Back up!
20:02Back up!
20:03Back up!
20:04Back up!
20:05Back up!
20:06Back up!
20:07Back up!
20:08Back up!
20:09Everybody back up!
20:10Back up!
20:11Get everybody out of here!
20:12Everybody out!
20:13Everybody out!
20:14Back up!
20:15Everybody out!
20:16Back up!
20:18Back up!
20:19There were pictures coming off the wall.
20:21There were pictures coming off the wall.
20:23Tyler PD officers were struggling to keep people at bay,
20:27to keep them from tearing the room up.
20:30There was a ton of emotion in that room.
20:32Everybody, come up.
20:33Everybody, get some help.
20:34Get some help.
20:35Get some help.
20:36I knew that.
20:37And everybody's crowding around.
20:38Everybody, help me.
20:39Everybody, help me.
20:40Everybody, help me.
20:42Let me go.
20:43Let me go.
20:44Let me go.
20:45Let me go.
20:47The very next thing we needed to do was get back
20:49control of that situation and get everybody up.
20:53It was a tense situation.
20:54It was a bomb ready to go off.
21:05We were no longer working just a shooting.
21:07We were working a murder.
21:10Emotions were high.
21:12Names were being thrown out.
21:13Blame was being thrown out, which caused people to actually
21:16start fighting each other because of who they were
21:19accusing or who they were protecting.
21:21One of the names that was being thrown out
21:24was Trayvon Maddox.
21:26We needed to turn our attention to Trayvon
21:28and get him in for an interview.
21:38During our research on information on Trayvon Maddox,
21:42it was brought to our attention that he had a previous arrest
21:45for an unlawful carry of a weapon.
21:47This definitely tells us that Trayvon could possibly
21:50be armed with a handgun, and he possibly is our shooter.
21:55Through our law enforcement resources,
21:56we were able to produce an address for Trayvon.
21:59So the next morning, myself, Detective Smith,
22:07Detective McClanahan all went to Trayvon's apartment
22:12to make contact with him.
22:15Hey, Tray, how are you?
22:17Good morning.
22:18Hey, so of course, you know why we're here, right?
22:22About what happened last night?
22:23Yeah, because I know you were one of the individuals there,
22:26right? Yes, ma'am.
22:27OK.
22:28Trayvon tells me right away, I was expecting you guys
22:31to come to my house.
22:32He appeared to be calm, cooperative,
22:35wasn't really worried that we were there.
22:37Did you ever go to the hospital?
22:38I couldn't go to the hospital because they thought I did it.
22:40They thought, like, I saw him, like, literally.
22:43They thought, like, everybody, like, all his family,
22:47like, because they were trying to fight with my friend, right?
22:50Mm-hmm.
22:51He said that he knew that a lot of people
22:53were so-called trash-talking him, calling him the shooter,
22:57saying that he's the one that shot Keontae,
23:00and being blamed for it.
23:02So I continued to press Trayvon on what happened at the club.
23:06People came on stage, and they hit my homeboy Trev.
23:09And when they hit him, gunshots went up.
23:13And when the gunshots went up, I heard two gunshots, right?
23:16I heard two gunshots.
23:17He got hit in the leg.
23:18He said, oh, I'm shot.
23:20So I grabbed his gun.
23:22I shot in the air.
23:23There's a bullet hole in there.
23:24You can go look at Tidwell.
23:25There is a bullet hole in the air where I shot right in the air.
23:28And then three more shots went off at us on stage.
23:31When Trayvon mentioned that he grabbed a gun from Contrel's waist,
23:35this is the first time I've heard that Contrel had a gun on him.
23:39Now, according to Trayvon, he said he wanted to fire Contrel's gun,
23:44fire it in the air because he wanted people to scatter and run away.
23:48He actually told us to go check the ceiling at Tidwell,
23:51which we already knew there was holes in the ceiling.
23:56So this was something that supported his story.
23:59But was it the initial first shot?
24:01It's still unknown at this point, but it's important that we find out.
24:06Where's the gun at?
24:08He said, where is the gun?
24:09The gun is in my car, like, I didn't drive in my car here because I was drunk.
24:15So it was at Tidwell.
24:17I gave my keys back to my homeboy.
24:19It was still hard to believe that he didn't know where this gun was.
24:23It was definitely suspicious.
24:24So we needed to bring him down to our office for more questioning.
24:28We don't have arrest warrant or anything from you, OK?
24:30Our main goal is just to find out what is going on.
24:32I would be right here if y'all have any arrest warrant to come back and give you.
24:35Now, I will say this, though, we do need you to come with us, though, OK?
24:59Yeah, it's going down this way.
25:01When we arrive to our office with Trayvon, of course, we walk him in and we sit him in
25:08one of our interview rooms.
25:10We know he had more to give.
25:12We know he knows more than actually what he told us.
25:15And we're hoping to go in there and get that information from him.
25:18From the beginning and as best as you can, everything you can remember, OK?
25:27So we was all on stage and, like, we're performing and there's a group that don't like us.
25:32And one of them got mad when he got on stage and pushed my homeboy and then he hit him.
25:36And when he hit him, I heard a shot, like, somebody shot.
25:39And my homeboy looked at me, he said, I got shot.
25:41And then I grabbed my homeboy's gun and I shot in the air to make everybody leave.
25:45And that's when I heard three more shots in the crowd.
25:47And then everybody, like, ran, like, after them three shots.
25:50And then there was this big dude, the G dude, he was outside with a gun.
25:53He initially stuck with his story, but during further questioning, he finally revealed to us a name of an individual that he saw outside of the club with a gun in his hand and gave us the name G, which stood for Giavari.
26:07It could be the fact that he's just trying to get all this off of him and steer us in a different direction.
26:14But it's still a lead we need to follow up with because Giavari could have been the possible shooter, too, of Keontae.
26:20All right, sit tight for a second.
26:22Trayvon admitted to shooting a gun in a place that was full with innocent bystanders, a very crowded place.
26:33So we made the decision to go forward and arrest him for deadly conduct, which is a felony charge.
26:40He was taken to our Smith County jail.
26:44We still had unanswered questions, especially with the gun that Trayvon used.
26:54Where it was, you know, we had no idea at that point.
26:57And this was something that was very important to this case because, again, in the back of my mind, he still could be responsible for Keontae's death.
27:07It is extremely important to find the gun that Trayvon used because that's something that we can do ballistic analysis on to prove if he was responsible for Keontae's death or he just shot up in the ceiling.
27:22Trayvon being charged and arrested at the time gave us a little time to conduct more investigations to find out what actually is true about what he told us.
27:32Due to Trayvon mentioning Giovanni to us, especially with a gun in his hands, he's now become someone of interest to us in this case.
27:42During our initial research with Giovanni, he had no criminal history.
27:46He had no connection to any of our victims, but we need to follow up any lead that leads us to anyone who could be responsible for Keontae's death.
27:54So we start watching him during surveillance.
27:58Then I received word from my narcotics detectives and fellow deputies of they saw Giovanni get in his car and followed him.
28:10We had the radio on. We were listening. He could be armed and dangerous.
28:16It's a high risk traffic stop where officers, when they initially get out, they don't approach the vehicle.
28:33They actually will have weapons drawn and they will call out the suspect out of their vehicle and have them walk back to them.
28:40Because again, he could be potentially armed.
28:43Driver, roll down your window.
28:48Turn off your engine.
28:50Take your keys out of the ignition.
28:54Go ahead, throw your keys out.
28:56Knowing a suspect might be armed, you have to be ready for anything and everything, especially when you're investigating the shooting.
29:05He could be one of the shooters.
29:08I've been in law enforcement 20 years.
29:12I don't know if I've ever done a simple traffic stop and not been nervous.
29:17Open the door from the outside.
29:31Go ahead and step out. Keep your hands visible.
29:34Keep your hands up.
29:36Turn away from me.
29:39Back up slowly.
29:40During the felony traffic stop, deputies were able to call out the individual driving the car back to them and properly detain him.
29:59They were able to identify the individual as being Giovari.
30:06Hey.
30:07Feel bad.
30:08What's going on?
30:09If I need to get that gun, use the key to open the trunk.
30:14Use the key to open the trunk?
30:15It's in the trunk?
30:16Yeah.
30:17Hey, say you need the key to open up the trunk.
30:18That's where the pistol's at.
30:19During Giovari's felony traffic stop, officers located a handgun in the trunk of his vehicle.
30:33Finding a firearm in Giovari's vehicle was very important, especially if this could be the potential murder weapon in Keontae.
30:43Do you mind passing that seat?
30:44Yeah.
30:45Once they had Giovari detained and in custody, they did bring him down to the sheriff's office for an interview.
31:04He was willing to talk to us.
31:09You start.
31:10All right.
31:11So, boom.
31:12I probably wasn't even there for like 15 minutes.
31:17So, I get there, whatever it is.
31:20I mean, I can tell there's a lot of tension going on from some guys that's on the dance floor, some guys that's on the stage.
31:25And they just start fighting on stage, probably 10, 16 seconds.
31:32That's when you hear the first shot.
31:34Pow!
31:35And then after the first one, like two more went out.
31:38They were like back to back.
31:39They were like, pow, pow!
31:40So, we had everybody trying to get out the door, whatever.
31:44I wouldn't have got my gun.
31:46I grabbed my gun from the car.
31:47I didn't have my gun at first.
31:48I grabbed my gun from the car.
31:50Giavari stated that he actually retreated his gun from his car, but it was after the shots had been fired already and people were running out of the building.
32:02Giavari tells us that he went to grab his gun and it was for his protection.
32:06Giavari admitted getting his firearm from his vehicle, but he also stated that he didn't shoot.
32:13I was skeptical to anything Giavari was saying.
32:17He was very adamant on clearing his name and wanting us to know and believe that he had no involvement in the death of Keontae Barrett.
32:38He shared a lot of information with us and was very forthcoming.
32:42But Giavari was arrested on unrelated charges for marijuana.
32:48We still need to take that weapon and still have it analyzed, see if it is ruled out or potentially the murder weapon.
32:55As we continued to investigate, a rumor was brought to our attention that a man named Nathan Austin was in possible possession of the gun that Trayvon used.
33:12With that information, a team of investigators went to locate Nathan and found Nathan at a pond.
33:25When detectives approach Nathan in the pond, the first thing he says to them is, I'm looking for the gun that Trayvon used.
33:33Nathan does tell detectives he is responsible for throwing the gun in the pond.
33:37So with this new information, we brought Nathan to our office for further questioning.
33:44This is Detective Teresa.
33:45Hi, Nathan.
33:46Yeah.
33:47She's going to be waiting.
33:48I'm going to turn my phone on silent, okay?
33:50So she shows up and she's like, I've got this, Tray gave me this gun.
33:54She wanted to throw it in Lake Tyler.
33:56Okay.
33:57I was just like, that's dumb.
33:59Nathan did admit to us that he was there at Tidwell after they went to the hospital.
34:04While he was at the hospital, he was actually approached by a girl there who said that she
34:11was at the concert that night and that she had possession of Trayvon's gun.
34:16I was like, just come out to my land and put it in my lake so that then you don't get seen
34:20on the side of the road.
34:21She just kept freaking out, freaking out, freaking out and said she wanted to get rid of it.
34:24And I was like, fine, just give it to me and I'll do it.
34:27So she took the gun out of the trunk and handed it to you?
34:29Yeah, she followed me down to the lake and then I had dirt in the lake.
34:36At this point, since we don't know the actual identification of the actual shooter, Nathan
34:42is now suspect as well.
34:44Everybody's a suspect until the actual shooter is identified.
34:48During my interview with Nathan, he allowed us to search his cell phone, which provided us messages
34:54between him and Trayvon.
34:56Trayvon wanted Nathan to recover the gun from the pond because he believed this would clear his name.
35:07It was very important for us to recover this weapon, this gun that was now in this pond.
35:12It's a big piece of evidence because any gun recovered in this case is a potential murder weapon,
35:19the weapon that killed Keontae Barrett.
35:21The main priority is locating the gun, so die team was assembled.
35:26And die team was able to locate the gun in the pond.
35:38We have Trayvon's gun and Giavari's gun sent off for testing to see if one of those matches the bullet.
35:46And that took Keontae's life.
35:49Eventually, we did get the results back.
36:02In the investigation, we located and tested Giavari's gun.
36:07And we also tested the gun located in the pond that was used by Trayvon and discarded by Nathan.
36:14One of the guns resulted in being a match for the gun used to kill Keontae.
36:19When I did receive the results of the ballistic testing proving which gun shot and killed Keontae,
36:28I decided to go to the Smith County Jail where Trayvon was still being held on the deadly conduct charge
36:34and actually give him the news of my findings.
36:37We do have to tell you something.
36:41What is it?
36:43It's not good news.
36:44What is it?
36:49We dragged the pawn, got the gun back, and it was where they were at, okay?
36:53There was no magazine.
36:54But we do know for a fact, from evidence, they were shot more than once.
37:02Barrett?
37:03Mm-hmm.
37:04Keontae?
37:05Keontae?
37:06Yeah.
37:07Yeah.
37:08Yeah, he was murdered by that gun.
37:10How was he murdered by that gun?
37:14How was he shot by that gun if I never, I did not shoot him with that gun?
37:18How was he murdered by that gun?
37:20Ballistic analysis came back and showed that Trayvon's gun mashed the bullet that killed Keontae Barrett.
37:26The bullet that killed Barrett came from the gun that was in your hand.
37:31How does that, how?
37:33Please tell me now.
37:34Because there's a new, okay, forensic science, okay?
37:37They did all the testing.
37:39The gun was shot more than once.
37:41There was a witness who said that you didn't double tap.
37:44You may have not realized it.
37:46I did not shoot that boy.
37:48That, that was my friend.
37:50I know.
37:51He kept on repeating that he'd shot up in the ceiling.
37:54He also would say maybe it was a ricochet, maybe the bullet bounced.
37:59But again, I told Trayvon that even if it was a ricochet, the science behind it and all the evidence,
38:07even if with a ricochet, you're responsible for that bullet.
38:10You knowingly pulled the trigger and you're responsible for wherever that bullet goes.
38:15He was in disbelief.
38:16He still did not believe that he killed Keontae.
38:20Why would I shoot him?
38:22Honestly, I believe it was an accident.
38:25Um...
38:30I do believe it was an accident.
38:34I did not shoot him.
38:36I mean, he had took a life.
38:38He should have been, in my eyes, remorseful, apologizing.
38:43I can understand Ben in disbelief, but it didn't seem like there was too much remorse there.
38:48Keontae was dead.
38:51His family is grieving.
38:53He knew Keontae.
38:56As a result of the investigation, Trayvon pled to the charge of mass slaughter and was sentenced to 10 years.
39:02There was no time that I thought Nathan Austin was responsible for the death of Keontae Barrett.
39:17There was nothing pointing towards him being involved.
39:20It's still unknown if there's more than one shooter.
39:23And till this day, we still have not been able to identify who else shot that night.
39:28But we know Trayvon Maddox shot Keontae.
39:32I don't believe Trayvon did it intentionally.
39:35I believe it was an accident.
39:37But you have to question, when he said he shot in the air, what exactly does that mean?
39:43There's no way to tell.
39:44And somebody died from it.
39:46It was a relief to be able to let the parents know that we had found the person responsible for killing Keontae.
39:54And when I first heard that they had arrested somebody and who it was, I mean, I knew this kid.
40:02And I knew this kid's parents.
40:05And had that kid would have came to me and told me that it was an accident, that he accidentally did that,
40:11then I could have forgiven him for that.
40:15But due to the fact that he tried to hide it and cover it up and act like he didn't do it
40:22and didn't show no remorse when we was in the courtroom,
40:25nah, I don't accept the type of sentencing that they gave him.
40:32My life is still in 2019.
40:35The day my baby died, that's the day I stopped living.
40:39I really haven't processed it.
40:41I know he's not coming back.
40:43And I know Keontae would want me to go on, but it feels like I'm stuck in 2019.
40:48When my son died, I died.
40:51After Keontae passed, his brothers and sisters, we had these made for him.
41:03It's a keepsake for Keontae to always remember him by.
41:08On the back, it's got a saying on it.
41:11You'll always be near to our hearts.
41:14This is my memory of him.
41:17I mean, it's just, you know, it's bittersweet.
41:21He was a good kid, taken too soon.
41:28There he is.
41:31There he is.
41:31There he is.
41:33There he is.
