00:00Warning, what you're about to see could be disturbing to some viewers.
00:06Viewer discretion is advised.
00:14Imagine being swallowed whole by a 60,000 pound sea monster.
00:20The whales open their mouths wide and surge up and take a big gulp.
00:25Before they can react, it actually takes them under the water.
00:30Or learning the hard way that dogs aren't very good drivers.
00:35That sweet, adorable boxy dog jumps through the driver's side door and lands on the accelerator.
00:43Suddenly, the van is hurling backwards towards James.
00:48How about being in the middle of a fight between a snake and a hawk?
00:53The snake coils even tighter around Peggy's arm.
00:56And that hawk is persistently pecking at the snake.
01:01Peggy's arm is going through it.
01:03She's like, Jesus, take the snake and the hawk.
01:06These are the freak accidents.
01:09So strange, they are truly unbelievable.
01:11Any homeowner knows DIY projects can be dangerous.
01:27But next time you whack your thumb with a hammer and mutter every swear word under the sun,
01:31you'll want to remember the story of Forthman Murph.
01:34And realize it could be a lot worse.
01:37Forthman Murph is a guy that likes doing hard work.
01:45And he's a guy that likes doing the job by himself.
01:49He's a 74-year-old retired lumberjack.
01:53And Forthman has decided to retire to a multi-acre property where he's far away from everything
01:59and he's surrounded by trees.
02:03One day, he looks up at a 100-foot tall tree on his property and decides its day has come.
02:10Forthman fires up the chainsaw and is ready to get to work.
02:13He performs this technique that's called notching, where he expertly cuts this V-shape into the side of the tree where he wants the tree to fall.
02:23And then on the other side, he makes this horizontal cut.
02:29With the chainsaw still roaring, Forthman steps back to admire his work.
02:34The tall tree tips over just like he wants it to.
02:37But as it falls,
02:39it hits the massive limb of another tree nearby.
02:44The rogue limb comes crashing down.
02:46It slams into Forthman's shoulder, knocks him back 10 feet.
02:49He ends up falling into this ditch.
02:52Then another nearby tree falls and crushes his foot and breaks his leg.
02:58But he has not let go of the chainsaw.
03:03He twists his body and he ends up landing on his face.
03:07He blacks out.
03:10A few seconds later, Forthman wakes up to a sound he's never heard before.
03:16The chainsaw is still running.
03:19And he can tell it's cutting something, but it's not wood.
03:23He sits up.
03:25He looks down.
03:26And he notices there's this giant pool of blood.
03:30That's when he's hit with an excruciating pain.
03:34Somehow, as he was falling, still holding onto the chainsaw,
03:38he manages to land on top of it with his neck.
03:41And it continued to cut through his windpipe, his esophagus, and muscles.
03:49And now his head is only held on by his carotid artery and his spine.
03:56Forthman realized that the only way he's going to be saved is by getting to his truck.
04:01Problem.
04:02His truck is 150 feet away, which means he now has to hop all the way to his truck,
04:10while also maintaining the integrity of his severed head,
04:14literally holding it on top of his neck so it doesn't fall off.
04:17As he's hopping along, he's struggling to breathe.
04:21The saw has cut his esophagus and his windpipe, and things keep filling up with blood.
04:25So every so often, he has to stop, lean forward, lift his head like a Pez dispenser,
04:30so he can clear his airways of blood so he can breathe again.
04:33Miraculously, he makes it to the truck, opens the door, turns the key,
04:40and starts driving the half a mile to his neighbor's house.
04:45Despite being shocked by the gruesome sight,
04:48Forthman's neighbor drives him to the nearest hospital, 20 miles away.
04:53When they get there, this hospital is a rural hospital.
04:57It is not equipped to put a man's head back onto his shoulders and neck properly.
05:02So they put him in an ambulance and tell him he's got to go to a bigger hospital in Tupelo,
05:0730 miles away.
05:09Two hours after the accident, Forthman finally makes it to Tupelo,
05:13but he's barely hanging on.
05:16Forthman goes through six surgeries to reattach his head
05:20and fighting off all sorts of infections along the way,
05:23and he makes it.
05:26Unbelievably, after all of these surgeries, seven months later,
05:30he's able to talk and breathe and speak completely normally.
05:35Forthman's surgeon can't even believe it and says with his injuries,
05:39he shouldn't have even survived if that had happened in the hospital parking lot,
05:44let alone two hours away by himself in the forest.
05:48Forthman Murph lives another 18 years and continues cutting down trees until the age of 92,
05:56still using that same chainsaw.
05:59While his miracle survival is one in a million,
06:02at a Sacramento ice cream parlor, the odds aren't so kind.
06:06It's a beautiful Sunday in September,
06:11and the Golden West Air Show is in full swing at the Sacramento Executive Airport.
06:17There are about a thousand airplane enthusiasts and families watching from the ground
06:21as all kinds of military planes,
06:23old aircraft, as well as experimental newer planes,
06:27buzz around and do various tricks in the sky above.
06:30By 4.30 p.m., the show comes to an end,
06:34and spectators are looking to make a fun afternoon a little bit sweeter.
06:38Across the street from the air show is a place called Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor.
06:42There's a huge crowd, many of them coming from the air show,
06:45and they're gathered enjoying some ice cream with family and friends.
06:49And one of the coolest things about it
06:51is that it's located directly in line with the end of the runway,
06:54so while you're enjoying a banana split,
06:55you can actually watch the planes taking off right above you.
07:00Back on the tarmac, pilots from the air show are ready to head home,
07:05including Richard Bingham and his vintage Korean War-era F-86.
07:09The F-86 is one of the fan favorites.
07:13This airplane is built for dogfighting,
07:16and the cool thing about that airplane
07:18is that it's actually seen combat during the Korean War.
07:22Bingham, who is a very seasoned pilot,
07:25taxis to his runway position.
07:26Then, on command, he throttles up and speeds down the runway.
07:32And about a third of the way down the runway,
07:34things start to go bad.
07:39He goes to lift the nose of the airplane up,
07:42and for some reason, he can't get airborne,
07:45and he's still cruising across the ground
07:47in excess of 150 miles an hour.
07:49Bingham tries to abort the takeoff,
07:52but it's too late for that.
07:54He runs out of runway.
07:57In a matter of seconds,
07:58the F-86 speeds past the runway
08:00and through a chain-link fence,
08:02causing the external fuel tanks to explode.
08:06The plane is now on fire,
08:08completely out of control.
08:10It crosses the street
08:11and crashes through a passing car.
08:14Both people in the car are instantly killed,
08:16but this freak accident doesn't end there.
08:19This out-of-control fireball
08:22plows through a parking lot
08:24and slams violently
08:26into the crowded Farrell's ice cream shop.
08:31An explosion rips through the ice cream parlor.
08:34It's like a missile that's torn through it.
08:37Inside, people are pinned
08:41under pieces of plane and roof,
08:44many of them already dead.
08:45It looks like a war zone.
08:48Firefighters are quick on the scene
08:49and able to save 28 people,
08:51but many others aren't so lucky.
08:5523 souls are lost that day
08:58at the ice cream parlor,
08:59and countless more are injured.
09:02As for Richard Bingham,
09:04miraculously, he survives.
09:06As he's being carried to safety
09:09with a broken leg and arm,
09:10he begs the first responders,
09:13don't save me,
09:14save the people in the fire.
09:16It appears to be
09:17a powerful moment of selflessness
09:19until the truth behind the accident
09:21is revealed.
09:23In a later FAA investigation,
09:26Richard testifies
09:26that he'd only spent
09:28three and a half hours
09:29in the cockpit of this plane,
09:31yet still claiming prior to the flight
09:33that he'd mastered the aircraft.
09:35Richard is a master pilot.
09:37He's got over 2,000 hours
09:39under his belt,
09:41but in Learjets,
09:42this is a military aircraft.
09:45Experts say you need
09:46100 hours minimum
09:47to become proficient
09:48in a Cold War-era fighter plane
09:51like this.
09:51Due to his inexperience
09:53flying this airplane,
09:55he had no idea
09:56that the F-86,
09:58the way it's designed,
10:00is you can't be aggressive
10:01in bringing the nose
10:02of the airplane up
10:03before you get
10:04the right amount of speed.
10:07Had he had more experience
10:08flying it,
10:09he would have known
10:10when that nose comes up
10:12too quickly,
10:13you kill all the airflow
10:14over the wings,
10:15causing the airplane
10:16not to be able
10:17to generate lift,
10:18destroying your chances
10:19of being able to take off.
10:22By the end
10:23of the investigation,
10:24while Richard Bingham
10:25isn't criminally charged,
10:27he does have
10:27his pilot's license revoked.
10:32While a tragic day,
10:34the Farrell's ice cream disaster
10:36compels the FAA
10:37to impose heavy restrictions
10:39on retired military aircraft
10:41operating in densely populated areas.
10:46Our greatest pleasures
10:47often come from
10:48the simplest things.
10:50For a young Ukrainian lab tech,
10:52it's chewing bubble gum.
10:54But his obsession
10:55for never-ending flavor
10:56backfires
10:57in a truly unbelievable way.
11:01Vladimir Lykonos
11:03is a 25-year-old student
11:05at Kyiv Polytechnic Institute
11:07with a passion
11:08for chemistry.
11:11He's there training
11:12to become a scientist,
11:13but he has a habit
11:15of taking chemicals
11:16home from the lab.
11:18Not because he's trying
11:19to steal them
11:19or for any nefarious purposes.
11:21He's just very, very
11:22into the study of chemistry.
11:24That passion
11:25even extends
11:25to Christmas break
11:26when Vladimir's home
11:28for the holidays.
11:29Vladimir spends a lot of time
11:31in his bedroom at home
11:33running various experiments.
11:35And while he does,
11:37he chews a lot of gum.
11:39Like a lot of people,
11:40Vladimir hates it
11:41when you're chewing your gum
11:42and all the flavor disappears.
11:43It's just like
11:44chewing cardboard.
11:45Luckily,
11:46Vladimir figures out
11:47how to solve this problem
11:48using chemistry.
11:50On his desk
11:51next to his computer,
11:52he keeps a little saucer
11:53of powdered citric acid.
11:56Citric acid
11:57is incredibly powerful.
11:58It's a flavor enhancer
11:59for candies and sodas.
12:01And when he dips his gum in it
12:03and puts it back in his mouth,
12:04it restores its flavor.
12:06He has his lab stuff
12:07strewn all around his room.
12:09And in this particular day,
12:10next to his saucer
12:11of citric acid powder,
12:13he has a little baggie
12:14of another powder
12:15from his lab.
12:17Vladimir is so focused
12:19on his work
12:20that while he's dipping
12:21and chewing,
12:22dipping and chewing,
12:23he accidentally dips
12:24into the other bag
12:25and then puts the gum
12:27back in his mouth
12:27and continues chewing.
12:29Without warning,
12:30that small mix-up
12:31triggers a violent explosion.
12:36His brother Rostislav
12:38goes into Vlad's room
12:39to check on
12:40what had happened
12:40and when he gets there,
12:42he sees the most
12:44horrifying thing
12:45you could ever imagine.
12:47He sees his brother Vlad
12:48sitting in his chair,
12:50blood covering his space
12:51because his lower jaw
12:53is completely missing.
12:55It turns out
12:57the other powder
12:57that he had dipped
12:58his gum in
12:59was an explosive.
13:00It's later discovered
13:01that Vlad,
13:02in addition to being
13:03very passionate
13:04about chemistry,
13:05also had an affinity
13:06for making his own fireworks.
13:09While the actual name
13:10of the explosive powder
13:11was never released,
13:13it's estimated
13:14that it was four times
13:15more powerful
13:16than TNT.
13:17Many speculate
13:19that it could be
13:20tert-butyl lithium
13:21or cyclonite
13:22because both of those
13:23are white powders
13:24that react explosively
13:25to pressure.
13:27So while Vlad is chewing
13:28this gum,
13:29which has been dipped
13:30in this chemical,
13:31the act of chewing
13:32compresses all of these
13:34explosive molecules
13:35repeatedly,
13:36which causes it
13:37to explode.
13:38police and paramedics
13:41rush to the house,
13:43but by the time
13:44they get there,
13:45it's too late.
13:46Vladimir's dead.
13:47A lot of the first responders
13:49that arrived on the scene
13:50described it as
13:51one of the most terrifying
13:53things they've ever encountered.
13:56Death by bubblegum
13:57is awful,
13:58but two years later
13:59on the other side
14:00of the world,
14:01another man finds himself
14:02in a different kind
14:04of bubble trouble.
14:04Steve McCormack
14:08is a truck driver
14:09from Appetiki, New Zealand,
14:11which is on the North Island,
14:12and it's a small town.
14:13It's miles
14:14from the nearest hospital.
14:17Steven is at work
14:18standing behind
14:19his truck cab,
14:20hooking it up
14:21to a trailer,
14:23something he's done
14:24a thousand times before.
14:27It's just another day
14:28on the job
14:29until one small misstep
14:31changes that.
14:33All of a sudden,
14:34Steven slips.
14:38And he feels
14:39a sharp pain
14:40in his left buttock.
14:42And at first he thinks,
14:43oh, he fell on a nail
14:45or something sharp.
14:47Then he hears
14:47a whoosh sound
14:48of compressed air.
14:51He turns to see
14:52what he's fallen on,
14:53and it's not good.
14:55It's a high-pressure air hose
14:56that's now embedded
14:57in his rapidly expanding
14:59left buttock.
15:01Within seconds,
15:02the valve
15:03is releasing air
15:05into his body
15:06up to a pressure
15:07of 160 PSI
15:09that's more than twice enough
15:11to burst the tires
15:13of his truck.
15:14The air pressure
15:15is so powerful
15:16that Steven starts
15:17to inflate.
15:18his skin is pulling
15:20taut and expanding.
15:23Skin's not supposed
15:24to do this.
15:25Yeah,
15:25does skin expand
15:26when one is pregnant
15:27or gains weight?
15:28Yes,
15:28but this is done
15:29over a period of time,
15:32not instantaneously.
15:33The pain is excruciating.
15:35In a matter of minutes,
15:36he's twice his normal size.
15:38His face is unrecognizable.
15:42Even his eyes
15:43are getting bigger,
15:44and one of them,
15:45he loses sight.
15:46His bosses rush over
15:48to see what is going on.
15:50The valve is still
15:51embedded in him,
15:53and Steven is howling
15:54in pain.
15:56He is so firmly affixed
15:59to this nozzle
16:01that his bosses
16:02can't pry him from it.
16:04His skin has expanded
16:05around it.
16:06With no way
16:07to pull the hose out,
16:09they quickly shut off
16:10the air supply.
16:11Now,
16:12after they're able
16:12to stop the airflow
16:14going into Steve,
16:15his co-workers
16:16are actually able
16:17to lift him off
16:18of the valve
16:18and lay him on his side,
16:20which is a good start.
16:21There's just one problem.
16:23The air isn't coming
16:25out of Steve.
16:26His bosses put ice packs
16:28on him to help
16:29relieve his suffering,
16:30but he's laying there
16:31in agony for over an hour
16:33before medics
16:34finally arrive.
16:36When the emergency service
16:38gets there,
16:39their first thought
16:39is, let's give him
16:40something for the pain.
16:41So they try to put something
16:42in one of his veins,
16:43but the pressure
16:44from the air
16:45inside his body
16:46just shoots the needle
16:48right out.
16:49When the doctors
16:50examined Steven,
16:51they realized
16:51that the air
16:52from the compressor
16:53has filled
16:54his body cavity,
16:55it's separated muscle
16:56from fat,
16:56and it's putting pressure
16:58on his heart
16:58and his lungs.
17:00One thing the doctors
17:01do note right away
17:02is how lucky he is,
17:03because if that valve
17:05had hit an artery
17:06or a vein,
17:07it would be deadly,
17:08but thankfully
17:09it was just embedded
17:10in the fat tissue
17:11of his buttock,
17:12which saved his life.
17:15Doctors insert a tube
17:16through Steven's ribs
17:17and into his lungs
17:18to help him breathe.
17:20So the tube was able
17:21to help him breathe better,
17:22but it didn't do anything
17:23about all of the air
17:25in his body.
17:26Oh no,
17:26unfortunately,
17:27he would have to wait
17:28for it to pass
17:29the old-fashioned way
17:31through belching
17:32and flatulence.
17:34After three days
17:36in intensive care
17:37and an inordinate amount
17:39of past gas,
17:40Steven is restored
17:41to his normal size
17:43in one of the most
17:44bizarre accidents
17:45that doctors
17:46have ever seen.
17:49Except for a small
17:51puncture scar,
17:52Steven walks away
17:52good as new
17:53and with a bloated
17:54reputation to match
17:55forever known
17:56as the real-life
17:57Michelin Man.
17:59When you've got a dog,
18:02excitement is part
18:03of the package.
18:05Unfortunately,
18:05that exuberance
18:06can sometimes
18:07have unexpected consequences.
18:1168-year-old James Campbell
18:14lives in Florida
18:15and he loves
18:16his pet boxer.
18:18What's not to love
18:19about a boxer?
18:20His squishy little face,
18:22the little nub tail.
18:23It's his best friend.
18:25So one lovely day,
18:26James and his wife, Iris,
18:28decide they're gonna hop
18:29into their 1995 Chevy van
18:31and head out
18:32to get some errands done.
18:34Iris hops in the driver's seat
18:35because she's gonna back
18:36the van down the driveway
18:37and then James will get out
18:39and open the gate.
18:41As she's always done,
18:43Iris has the van
18:44in reverse
18:44with her foot
18:45on the brake
18:46and she opens the door
18:48so she can keep an eye
18:49on James
18:50to know when the gate's open
18:52so she knows
18:53when to back up.
18:54And at that very moment,
18:56the couple's 70-pound boxer
18:57comes barreling
18:58through the yard
18:59wondering
19:00where his owners
19:02are going.
19:03And then,
19:05while Iris' door
19:06is open,
19:07that sweet,
19:09adorable boxer dog
19:10jumps
19:11through the driver's side door
19:12down to the floorboard
19:14and lands squarely
19:16on the accelerator.
19:18Suddenly,
19:19the van is hurling
19:20backwards
19:21towards James.
19:23Iris tries everything
19:24to stop the van,
19:25but it's no use.
19:27The van hits James,
19:29runs him over,
19:31and ultimately traps him
19:32underneath the wheels.
19:34When paramedics arrive,
19:35they find James
19:36completely crushed
19:37by the van.
19:38They believe
19:39he died instantly.
19:41You can't blame the parents.
19:42You can't blame the dog.
19:44It's just a tragic,
19:46awful,
19:47unbelievable,
19:48and bizarre accident.
19:50Being run over
19:51by your own car
19:52is certainly ironic,
19:54but it pales
19:55in comparison
19:56to the man
19:56who meets his maker
19:57by way of his own
19:59moneymaker.
20:02When you watch someone
20:04ride a Segway,
20:05it's almost like
20:06they're defying
20:07the laws of physics.
20:08They're kind of
20:08floating by.
20:10In the 2000s,
20:11Segway is
20:12a growing company.
20:13People are using them
20:14all over the place.
20:16Tourists
20:16and male people,
20:18even cops
20:18are using them.
20:20By 2009,
20:21perhaps no one
20:22is a bigger fan
20:23of the Segway
20:23than British millionaire
20:24Jim Heselden.
20:26At 62 years of age,
20:28Jim Heselden
20:29is a guy
20:29who just loves
20:31to ride his Segway.
20:32There's not a morning
20:33that goes by
20:34where he doesn't
20:35have his morning roll
20:36through his neighborhood
20:38of West Yorkshire
20:39in England.
20:39Jimmy's is truly
20:40a rags-to-riches story.
20:42He spends his youth
20:43in the slums of Leeds,
20:44and at 15,
20:46he starts working
20:46as a coal miner.
20:47Growing up
20:48in the coal mines,
20:49Jimmy becomes
20:50pretty rough and tumble,
20:51but he also has
20:52a few good ideas
20:53and sort of fancies
20:54himself an inventor.
20:56In 1989,
20:58he comes up
20:58with an idea
20:59that makes him rich.
21:00It's a gigantic
21:01foldable container
21:02to be used
21:03on the battlefields.
21:05These containers
21:05become a huge hit
21:06with militaries
21:07all around the planet,
21:08and by 2009,
21:10Jimmy's become
21:10one of the wealthiest
21:11people in Britain.
21:13He's worth
21:13about half a billion dollars.
21:15That's when Jimmy
21:16goes all in
21:17on his favorite pastime.
21:19Jimmy loves his Segway
21:20so much
21:21that on Christmas Day,
21:222009,
21:23he buys
21:24the fledgling Segway, Inc.
21:25And being the owner
21:26of the company
21:27doesn't change a thing
21:28for Jimmy.
21:28He's still out there
21:29riding his Segway
21:31every morning.
21:33So nine months
21:34after Jimmy buys
21:35the Segway company,
21:36he's rolling around
21:37on a hilly dirt road
21:39near his home
21:40that he's very familiar with.
21:41He's rolled on it
21:42hundreds of times.
21:43As he's on his roll,
21:45he notices about
21:4650 feet away,
21:47there's a dog walker
21:48approaching him.
21:49So as Jimmy gets closer
21:50to the dog walker,
21:52he decides to be courteous
21:53and let him pass,
21:54so he backs up
21:54just a little bit
21:55to give him room to pass.
21:58Jimmy backs up
21:59his Segway
22:00just a hair too far,
22:02and he and his
22:04beloved Segway
22:04go careening
22:05down this 42-foot drop
22:07complete with jagged rocks
22:09and tree limbs,
22:10and he ends up
22:11falling face
22:12first dead
22:13in the river wharf
22:14below his Segway
22:15floating nearby.
22:17For Segway,
22:18this is terrible PR.
22:21The hard truth is
22:21anytime after Jimmy's death,
22:23every time you saw a Segway,
22:24all you could really think was,
22:26hey, didn't the owner
22:27of the company
22:27die on one of those?
22:29It's a really unfortunate story.
22:31This was a guy
22:31who was loved
22:32by his community,
22:34poured money
22:34into the town,
22:35and he even employed
22:36350 people in Leeds
22:38to work at his factory.
22:39Jim Hasselden's tragic fate
22:43reminds us that
22:44it is sometimes
22:45the things in life
22:45we love the most
22:46that hurt us in the end.
22:51Ah, the monotony
22:52of household chores.
22:54What some of us
22:55wouldn't give
22:55for a little excitement
22:56to save us
22:57from the drudgery.
22:58A Texan named Peggy Jones
23:00would tell you
23:01to be careful
23:02what you wish for.
23:03Peggy Jones is out
23:08riding her lawnmower
23:10in Silsby, Texas,
23:12just having a good time
23:14living life.
23:16When all of a sudden,
23:17out of nowhere,
23:20a snake falls from the sky
23:22directly onto Peggy.
23:28Clearly the snake
23:29is just as frightened
23:30as Peggy is
23:31because it wraps around
23:33her arm
23:33and then lashes
23:34at her face.
23:37The snake clings
23:38desperately to Peggy
23:39as she tries
23:39to fight it off.
23:40As bizarre
23:41as this aerial anomaly
23:42is, it's about
23:43to get even stranger.
23:45As she's fighting
23:46with the snake,
23:47she hears this crazy
23:48loud screech
23:49coming from above.
23:53When she looks up,
23:54she sees a hawk,
23:56and it starts diving
23:57directly in her direction.
23:59The hawk latches itself
24:03onto Peggy's arm
24:04and starts pecking
24:05at the snake.
24:07Peggy's now caught
24:09in the crossfire
24:10of a ravenous raptor
24:11and a snake
24:12who's determined
24:13to go down fighting.
24:14The snake coils
24:15even tighter
24:16around Peggy's arm,
24:17and that hawk
24:18is persistently
24:19pecking at the snake,
24:21but it just keeps
24:22missing and hitting
24:24Peggy's poor arm.
24:25Clearly, the hawk
24:28had caught the snake
24:29and was planning
24:29on eating it for lunch,
24:31but it dropped it,
24:32and now it wants
24:34its snake back.
24:35Suddenly, the hawk
24:36flies away.
24:38Peggy's like,
24:38I've been saved,
24:39but the hawk
24:40just does a couple circles
24:41and then dive bombs
24:42it again.
24:45It's the same horror show
24:46over and over again.
24:48Peggy's arm
24:49is going through it.
24:51Peggy just wants
24:52to mow her lawn.
24:53She's like,
24:53Jesus, take the snake
24:55and the hawk.
24:56Finally, the hawk
24:57gets a grip on the snake
24:58and flies away
24:59with its lunch.
25:01Although she's relieved
25:03that the snake
25:03and hawk are gone,
25:04when she looks
25:05at her arm,
25:06she realizes
25:07that she's suffering
25:08deep puncture wounds.
25:10She has scratches.
25:11She's covered in bruises.
25:12She runs to the house.
25:13She screams for her husband,
25:15and he drives
25:16into the emergency room.
25:17The doctors
25:18in the emergency room
25:19do not believe
25:20that this woman
25:21has not been stabbed.
25:22It looks identical
25:23to wounds
25:24that would be sustained
25:24from a knife.
25:26And he just kept on it,
25:27kept on it,
25:27and I just couldn't
25:28get rid of the snake.
25:30This is the first time
25:31they've seen a hawk attack
25:32on a human like this.
25:34This is probably
25:35going to be the last time
25:36they'll see this.
25:39Lucky for Peggy,
25:40she makes a full recovery.
25:41The snake does not.
25:43If Peggy's tail
25:44cautions us
25:45to keep our heads up
25:46while mowing the lawn,
25:47the next one warns
25:48lucky fishermen
25:49to keep their mouths shut.
25:52It's just another day
25:55at Boscombe Pier
25:56in Bournemouth,
25:57and 28-year-old fisherman
25:59Sam Quillum
26:00is out with his friends,
26:02and they're hankering
26:03for some Dover sole.
26:06Sam casts his line.
26:08He gets a bite.
26:09He reels it in,
26:10and him and his buddies
26:11are ecstatic
26:12that they've caught a fish.
26:14When Sam pulls the fish up
26:16over the pier,
26:17sure enough,
26:17it's a Dover sole.
26:18With his catch secured,
26:21next is the most important part,
26:23a tradition that's been practiced
26:24by anglers for decades.
26:26Time to pucker up.
26:28Sam holds the fish
26:30up to his mouth
26:31and has done
26:31what so many fishermen
26:32before him have done.
26:34He plants a big smooch
26:35right there on the sole.
26:37Unfortunately for Sam,
26:40this is one flirty fish.
26:44The fish squirts out of his hand
26:46like a bar of soap,
26:47and it goes the only direction
26:48it can go,
26:49directly into Sam's mouth.
26:52This fish moves fast.
26:55Instinctually,
26:55it's thinking
26:56it's returning to the water,
26:57so within a matter of seconds,
27:00it's down past his molars,
27:02and it lodges itself
27:04in Sam's throat.
27:05Sam is in an all-out panic
27:08because he can't breathe,
27:10and he starts running around
27:11like a chicken
27:11with his head cut off.
27:13Sam's friends,
27:14Steve and Matt,
27:15at first are laughing
27:16and they think it's a joke,
27:18but they quickly realize
27:19that he's in trouble.
27:21They try to grab the fish,
27:23they reach into his throat,
27:24but they can't get it.
27:26The fish has fins
27:27around his body,
27:28and they fold
27:29in one direction
27:30allowing it to go in forward,
27:31but if you try
27:32to pull the fish back out,
27:33they open up,
27:34and so that prevents them
27:36from pulling it
27:37out of his throat.
27:38Soon, Sam's turning blue
27:39and ultimately passes out.
27:42Sam goes into cardiac arrest.
27:44One of his buddies
27:45attempts to perform CPR
27:46while the other
27:47is calling emergency services.
27:49It is chaos on this pier.
27:53The paramedic arrives
27:54within three minutes,
27:56and when they see
27:58what's going on,
27:59they're in shock.
28:00They've never seen
28:01a fish larger
28:02than someone's windpipe before.
28:06The paramedic
28:07grabs some forceps
28:08and attempts to go in there
28:09and pull the fish out,
28:10but they have the same problem
28:12his friends have.
28:13It's stuck.
28:18Finally,
28:19after seven tries,
28:22he's able to pull the fish
28:26in its entirety
28:27from Sam's mouth.
28:29On the way to the hospital,
28:31medics and the ambulance
28:31successfully revive Sam,
28:34leaving him with
28:35an unbelievable story to tell.
28:38After he gets out
28:39of the hospital,
28:40Sam returns
28:41to the scene of the kiss
28:42to thank the paramedic
28:44who saved him.
28:45I've never seen
28:46anything like it.
28:47Also to take photographs
28:49with the fish
28:50that almost cost him his life.
28:54When asked if he will
28:55ever kiss a fish again,
28:56Sam says he will,
28:58but only if they are too big
28:59to fit in his mouth.
29:03The Old Testament
29:05speaks of a prophet Jonah
29:06who spent three days
29:07in the belly of a whale.
29:09While nobody has since
29:10matched this feat,
29:11two California kayakers
29:13come closer
29:13than probably anyone wants to.
29:18It's a gorgeous and calm
29:20Monday morning
29:20in San Luis Obispo Bay,
29:22making the day extra special.
29:2420 enormous humpback whales
29:26have been spotted.
29:30Kayakers and paddleboarders
29:32are flocking to the bay
29:33with the hopes
29:34of watching the animals feeding.
29:38Two women,
29:38Julia McSorley
29:39and her friend,
29:40Liz Cottriel
29:41are enjoying
29:42Julie's two-person kayak.
29:44That's when the two ladies
29:45spot a massive humpback whale
29:47just below the surface.
29:49Julie, for one,
29:50is thrilled at the sight
29:51of these real-life giants
29:53and wants to go in
29:54for a closer look.
29:55Liz, on the other hand,
29:56is a lot more hesitant,
29:58but Julie assures her
29:59that nothing bad will happen.
30:02Liz finally agrees to go.
30:04Meanwhile,
30:05just below the surface,
30:06something very big
30:07is getting ready for lunch.
30:10Humpbacks feed
30:11on what are known
30:12as bait balls,
30:13giant, dense swarms
30:15or schools of fish
30:17that gather near the surface.
30:20When the whales
30:21are ready for a bite,
30:22they open their mouths wide
30:24and surge up
30:25through the bait balls
30:27and take a big gulp,
30:28taking whatever fish
30:30they can catch.
30:32Julie and Liz
30:33are getting
30:33an incredibly close
30:35front-row seat
30:36to this amazing sight.
30:38But maybe they're
30:39a little too close
30:40because the women
30:41suddenly find themselves
30:42surrounded by
30:43a very frightened
30:44school of fish.
30:46And before they can react,
30:47suddenly...
30:48their entire kayak
30:53is lifted up
30:55into the sky.
30:57Oh, no!
30:59Engulfing their entire kayak
31:02with the two women
31:04inside the boat.
31:05Julie and Liz
31:06are now in the mouth
31:07of this 50-foot,
31:0960,000-pound humpback whale,
31:11and it actually
31:12takes them
31:13under the water.
31:16Although it's a truly
31:17terrifying scenario,
31:19there's actually
31:19a silver lining.
31:23Unlike sharks
31:24or orcas,
31:25humpback whales
31:26do not have teeth.
31:27They use frilly plates
31:30called baleen
31:31to filter small fish
31:33and crustaceans
31:34from the water.
31:36They couldn't swallow
31:37a human
31:37because their throat
31:38is only the width
31:40of an average grapefruit.
31:42The whale
31:43very quickly realizes
31:44that something in his mouth
31:46that shouldn't be there,
31:47so it spits out
31:48Julie and Liz,
31:49and they find themselves
31:50popping up to the surface
31:51of the water
31:52with their kayak
31:53upside down
31:54right next to them.
31:57Surprisingly,
31:59they are completely unharmed.
32:02If there's any question
32:04just how close
32:05these women got
32:06inside this whale,
32:07as they're walking
32:07to their car,
32:09Liz shakes out her shirt
32:10and a bunch of fish
32:11fly out.
32:12When Julie and Liz
32:13get back to their vehicle,
32:15Julie checks her pockets,
32:16and it appears
32:17there is one casualty
32:18on the day.
32:19Her car keys are missing.
32:21While kayaking
32:25the high seas
32:26might seem a bit
32:26on the adventurous side,
32:28sometimes even
32:29the most benign
32:30tourist activities
32:31can take
32:31a catastrophic turn.
32:36It's a busy Saturday
32:37in a suburb
32:38of Barcelona,
32:39and a father
32:41and his young son
32:42are enjoying a stroll.
32:43They're walking along
32:44the center of the city,
32:45and they come across
32:46something that would be
32:47cool to any kid.
32:48It's a recent installation,
32:50a giant 20-foot
32:52papier-mâché statue
32:53of a stegosaurus.
32:55The dad sees this
32:57as the ideal time
32:58to get a selfie.
32:59So his kid poses
33:02near the dinosaur,
33:03and suddenly,
33:04they're hit with
33:06the most foul,
33:07rotten stench.
33:10That putrid smell
33:11seems to be coming
33:12from the depths
33:13of the dinosaur.
33:16The father starts
33:17investigating.
33:18He's looking all around
33:19this dinosaur,
33:20and he notices
33:21a crack in the back
33:22right leg
33:23of the stegosaurus.
33:25He looks in the crack
33:27on the stegosaurus's leg.
33:29It's the body
33:30of a dead man
33:31upside down
33:33inside the stegosaurus,
33:35and he is horrified.
33:37So instead of taking a selfie,
33:41the guy dials
33:42emergency services,
33:44all while wondering
33:45just how this guy
33:46got in there.
33:48Police arrive at the scene,
33:49and soon investigators
33:51piece together
33:51the unbelievable story
33:53of the man's
33:54final moments.
33:57A few days prior,
33:58a man was walking
34:00through the town,
34:01also taking photos,
34:02when he sees
34:03the giant
34:04papier-mâché
34:05stegosaurus.
34:07Much like the father
34:08and son
34:08who found his body,
34:10he's fascinated by it.
34:12It is believed
34:13that he then decides
34:14to reach into the dinosaur
34:15to take photos
34:16of the inside.
34:18And then he accidentally
34:20drops his phone,
34:22and it falls
34:23inside the dinosaur's body.
34:27The man who obviously
34:30wants his phone back
34:31crawls inside the belly
34:34of this stegosaurus,
34:35and he sees this faint glow
34:37coming up
34:38from the back right leg.
34:41Desperately,
34:41he's reaching deeper
34:43and deeper
34:43into the leg,
34:44trying to grab the phone.
34:46And then he slips,
34:48falls,
34:49and smashes headfirst
34:51into the ground,
34:52probably killing him instantly.
34:55That's where he remains
34:57for the next two days,
34:58stuck inside
35:00the stegosaurus leg.
35:02After the man
35:03is discovered
35:03by the kid
35:05and his father,
35:06firefighters use saws
35:07to open the statue
35:08and remove the dead body.
35:10Police immediately
35:12identify the body
35:13as that of a 39-year-old man
35:15who was reported missing
35:17by his family
35:18just days earlier.
35:21Turns out,
35:22extinct or not,
35:24dinosaurs are
35:25mighty dangerous.
35:27As gender reveals
35:30get more creative,
35:31some ideas
35:32do not go as planned,
35:34like one dad-to-be
35:35in Arizona
35:36whose vision turns
35:37into a nightmare
35:38in seconds.
35:41In Arizona,
35:43south of Tucson,
35:44a guy named Dennis Dickey
35:46is there with his wife
35:46who is very, very pregnant.
35:49Now, surrounding them
35:50is all of their friends
35:51and family,
35:52and they have been assured
35:53they're about to see
35:54the most exciting
35:55gender reveal
35:56ever done.
35:59Out in the brush,
36:00about 100 feet away
36:02from any of their
36:03friends and family,
36:04is a giant box,
36:05and it's labeled
36:06boy or girl.
36:08Now, Dennis,
36:09who happens to be
36:09a U.S. border patrols agent
36:11who's off-duty,
36:12pulls out his rifle,
36:14and he takes aim
36:15at the box.
36:17After missing
36:18his first three shots,
36:19the fourth time
36:20is a direct hit.
36:22The box explodes,
36:25and it releases
36:27a giant, powerful plume
36:29of blue smoke.
36:31It's a boy.
36:33Unfortunately,
36:34the explosion
36:34doesn't just let out
36:36a cloud of blue smoke.
36:38Fire immediately catches
36:39the surrounding dry brush.
36:42Within seconds,
36:43the flames are out
36:4430 feet in every direction.
36:47Dennis Dickey runs
36:48to the fire,
36:48which is already
36:49out of control,
36:50and he's trying
36:51everything he can
36:51to put it out.
36:52He's throwing dirt on there.
36:53He's trying to stomp
36:54parts of it,
36:55but nothing is working.
36:56Start packing up!
36:57And the blaze
36:58just keeps growing
36:59and growing and growing.
37:02You gotta feel bad
37:03for the mom.
37:04She's celebrating
37:05that she's having a boy,
37:06but on the other hand,
37:07her husband just started
37:07a wildfire
37:08that ends up burning
37:0947,000 acres
37:11of Coronado National Forest.
37:13How did he
37:14possibly create
37:15such a massive explosion
37:16with one bullet?
37:18Because days before,
37:20Dennis had stuffed the box
37:21with something called
37:22Tannerite.
37:24It is something
37:25very similar to TNT.
37:27It's an explosive charge
37:28that ignites
37:30when it's hit
37:31by a projectile
37:32like a bullet.
37:34Immediately after
37:35accidentally setting off
37:36the fire,
37:37Dennis does the right thing
37:38and turns himself
37:39into authorities.
37:40While the sawmill fire
37:42causes $8 million
37:43in damage,
37:45Dennis Dickey
37:45is ordered to pay
37:46$220,000
37:47in restitution
37:48and serve
37:49five years probation.
37:51Of course,
37:52gender reveals
37:53aren't the only celebrations
37:54that can end in chaos.
37:56A century earlier,
37:58college football fans
38:00found that out
38:00the hard way.
38:03It's Thanksgiving Day
38:04in San Francisco
38:05at Recreation Park Stadium.
38:07It's the game
38:08of the year
38:08between rivals
38:09Cal Berkeley Golden Bears
38:11and the Stanford Cardinals
38:12and everyone
38:13within a 30-mile radius
38:15wants to be there.
38:16The battle between Cal
38:17and Stanford
38:18is actually one of the oldest
38:19college football rivalries
38:21in the United States.
38:22It dates back to 1892
38:24and it comes to be known
38:25as the Big Game.
38:26The stands are packed
38:28to the brim
38:29with nearly 20,000 spectators
38:31but outside,
38:33thousands more
38:33are trying to get in.
38:35So now you have
38:36all these fans
38:37who can't get into the game
38:38and they're now looking
38:39for anywhere
38:40to catch a glimpse.
38:42Turns out they're in luck.
38:44Recreation Park
38:45is in an industrial part
38:46of the city
38:47that has a lot
38:48of tall buildings.
38:49From some of these roofs,
38:51you can get a good look
38:52into the stadium
38:53and all the action
38:54on the football field.
38:57But the best view
38:58is from the San Francisco
39:00and Pacific Glassworks factory
39:01just across the street
39:03from the stadium.
39:05Now, it being Thanksgiving Day,
39:07there's really only
39:08a skeleton crew
39:08working at this factory
39:10and regardless,
39:11you can't really do anything
39:12about droves
39:13of college students
39:14trying to get on this roof.
39:16About 400 young men
39:17climb onto the roof
39:18just in time
39:20for the 2.30 p.m. kickoff.
39:22You've got scores
39:23of fans up there
39:23but this metal corrugated roof
39:26held up with wooden slats
39:27is not really designed
39:28to hold hundreds and hundreds
39:30of cheering football fans.
39:33About 15 minutes
39:35into the game,
39:35some of these fans
39:36start to hear
39:37these little creaks,
39:38these little cracks
39:39in the rooftop
39:40but they're not really
39:41paying too much mind
39:42because people are cheering,
39:43they're yelling,
39:44they're screaming.
39:45A few moments pass
39:46and then a loud crack.
39:49The crowd scrambles
39:50to find safety
39:51but it's too late.
39:52As the roof gives way
39:54under the heavy weight,
39:55fans begin plummeting
39:57into the factory.
39:58Now luckily,
39:58the majority of the people
39:59on the roof
40:00fall only a few feet
40:02onto the wooden slats
40:03that are holding up the roof
40:04but unfortunately,
40:06not everyone is as lucky.
40:08Because this is
40:09a glassworks company,
40:10they have a giant
40:11500 degree Fahrenheit furnace
40:14burning inside
40:15down below.
40:17Surrounding that giant furnace
40:18is this metal grate
40:20that some of the spectators
40:22actually fall onto
40:24and get tangled up in.
40:26And because this metal grate
40:27is only a few feet
40:28away from the furnace,
40:30they are slowly
40:31and agonizingly
40:33burning to death.
40:36Some survive the fall
40:37only to face
40:39another horror.
40:41The fuel pipes
40:41in the factory
40:42are severed
40:44and cut open
40:44by the falling debris
40:45from the roof
40:46causing a sprinkler-like effect
40:49of this burning hot oil
40:50to scatter
40:51all around the factory.
40:52Everyone in the stadium
40:54is so caught up
40:54in the game
40:55that it doesn't even
40:56register to them
40:57the mayhem
40:57that's happening
40:58just next door.
41:00Ultimately,
41:01the event claims
41:0323 lives,
41:04all young men
41:06and hundreds more
41:07are injured.
41:09The 1900 Thanksgiving Day
41:11accident
41:11goes down
41:12as the deadliest disaster
41:14in American sports history.
41:18Whether it's almost
41:19choking to death
41:20on the catch of the day
41:21or coming within
41:22an inch of complete
41:23decapitation
41:24via chainsaw,
41:25these are the freak
41:26accidents that are
41:27so surprising.
41:28They are truly
41:29unbelievable.
