00:00A rights group has urged the government to explain why Federal Court Judge Ahmad Theriruddin Saleh

00:06was appointed to the Judicial Appointments Commission, bypassing a more senior judge for the role.

00:13The National Human Rights Society said the decision to appoint Theriruddin in State of Justice Rosaria Bujang,

00:19who was appointed to the Federal Court in 2020, raised serious questions about the criteria used in the selection.

00:26In a statement, Hakan President M. Ramachalvam said the sidelining of seniority without transparent justification

00:33strikes at the heart of judicial independence and institutional integrity.

00:39It was reported yesterday that Theriruddin, who was elevated to the Federal Court in November last year,

00:45had been appointed to the JAC, replacing Zabaria Yusof, who retired last month.

00:51Ramachalvam also highlighted that serious allegations against Theriruddin remain unresolved,

00:57pointing to leaked JAC meeting minutes in which a now-retired judge accused him of interfering with the judiciary.

01:06Appointing commissioners to the JAC, a body entrusted with safeguarding the integrity of judicial appointments,

01:13while such allegations remain outstanding, is troubling and sets a dangerous precedent.
