00:00The much-awaited Medical Amendment Act 2024, which addresses the non-recognition of specialists
00:07under the Health Ministry's Parallel Pathway Programme, came into force last week.
00:12Gazetted on October 17th, the Act paves the way for these doctors to apply to the Malaysian
00:17Medical Council to enrol on the National Specialist Register.
00:22Senator R.A. Linggiswaran said listed specialists in public hospitals will now be entitled to
00:27a monthly allowance of RM3,000 and can work in the private wings of these hospitals.
00:33Linggiswaran had previously criticised the MMC for not recognising courses under the
00:38Parallel Pathway Programmes and rejecting at least 20 qualified cardiothoracic surgeons,
00:43despite a shortage in government hospitals.
00:46At least 10 specialists have sued the MMC for refusing to recognise qualifications they
00:51secured from local and foreign universities.
00:55When contacted, lawyer Jeremy Reyes, representing the cardiothoracic surgeons, expressed his
01:00client's relief that the amendments to the law have now been gazetted.
01:04He said they are awaiting a court date to record a final settlement of the suit.
